Alex Mercado -- Found Deceased 11/2/09

Post by Justice4all on Sun Nov 01, 2009 9:11 am

MENDOTA -- The body of a 4-year-old boy who went missing Friday was discovered in the dryer of a home next door to his family's northwest Mendota home, Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims said Saturday night.

A 14-year-old boy who lives in the home has been arrested and will be charged in the killing of Alex Christopher Mercado, she said.

The 4-year-old's body was put in the dryer after he was killed, Mims said.
Sheriff's spokesman Chris Curtice said that after Alex's parents reported him missing Friday afternoon, Mendota police and about 50 volunteers searched the area.

About 3 a.m. Saturday, the sheriff's office search and rescue team began checking fields, waterways and canals.
Mendota teen to be charged in missing boy's killing

The body Alex Christopher Mercado, a 4-year-old boy who went missing Friday, was discovered in the dryer of a home next door to his family’s northwest Mendota home.

Another search of the neighborhood began six hours later, and a deputy found the body early Saturday afternoon, Curtice said.

Neighbors said Alex's disappearance and the discovery of his body saddened and frightened them.

Here is another case of a teenager killing an innocent child. I can't believe this keeps happening

We let a whole generation of children raise themselves because child care was so expensive and divorce rates/absent parents so high.

We taught our children they had the right not to be hit. We told them how to get taken away from home if anybody did hit them. We never explained to them that spanking them was allowed and we were talking about abuse. We gave our children the upper hand by giving them only half of the problem(hitting) and allowing them to yell abuse. Parents were afraid to be a parent because your child may tell somebody you are abusing them, and the child would be believed. (I am not saying this is a bad thing. In many cases it is warranted for the child to yell abuse....but sometimes....)

We took religion out of schools. We taught our children they did not have to respect GOD, say GOD or believe in GOD. If we were lucky, our children stayed with church, but many children do not get that from home...they got it from school. Our Flag no longer gets respect. Teachers are no longer respected. LE is no longer feared.

This is not a surprising outcome with all the "changes" we have made while trying to protect our children.

This is so sad, and outrageous. I can't help but wonder about that 14 year old's parents. It's painfully obvious that children are not being taught right from wrong. There are so many selfish idiots having children. I also wonder about little Alex's parents. Shocked affraid Where were they when Alex went missing? What were they doing that was so important they couldn't watch their 4 year old child? Nothing is more important than making sure your child is safe from harm! Mad Evil or Very Mad It's terribly sad when a child has to pay the price for their parent's stupidity. Sad Crying or Very sad not fair What a tragedy it is when parents are too stupid, selfish or lazy to teach their children morals. Sad

Jag and Book - my thoughts exactly. I also believe instant gratification is another issue. Below is an excellent book, kind of a Parenting 101 in the 21st century:

Generation Text
Raising Well-Adjusted Kids In An Age Of Instant Everything

Generation Text examines the ways in which children’s identities are shaped by the world around them…and how, with an absence of meaningful barriers between impulse and the ability to act on them, parents can help children learn to make intelligent choices and manage the potential overload successfully.

• The impact of immediate gratification. How to teach your children that they do sometimes have to wait—or hear the word “no.”

• The balance between work ethic and sense of entitlement. Help your child become more dependable and conscientious.

Personal responsibility, respect and the meaning of morals has been lost. So many children have been left to raise themselves.

Mendota Teen Charged as Adult in 4-year-old Boy's Murder

A Mendota teenager is being charged as an adult for the murder of 4-year-old Alex Mercado.

14-year-old Raul Castro now faces murder, kidnapping, and sexual assault charges in connection with his neighbor's death. CBS47 On Your Side has decided to release the suspect's name because he is being charged as an adult.

On Saturday, A Fresno County Sheriff's deputy discovered Mercado's body in a clothes dryer inside the home Castro lives in. Mercado was reported missing Friday afternoon, prompting an all-out search by air and on the ground. The search included federal, county, and local agencies. An autopsy completed over the weekend determined Mercado had drowned.

Castro is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday morning.

11:56 a.m.: A 14-year-old Mendota boy has confessed to killing a 4-year-old neighbor because the toddler was going to tell his mother the teen had molested him, according to a court affidavit made public this morning.

Raul Renato Castro molested Alex Christopher Mercado in the bathroom of the Castro’s home on Tuft Street in Mendota, the affidavit said. When Alex started crying and threatened to tell his mother, Castro said he decided to kill him, the affidavit said.

Castro held the boy under water for two to four minutes. He then got into the tub to hold the boy down until he died, the affidavit said.

After checking the boy’s pulse to make sure he was dead, Castro said he slung the boy over his shoulder and carried him to a clothes dryer. He put the body in the dryer to conceal the victim’s whereabouts, the affidavit said. He then took a shower and changed his clothing.

I'm glad they are charging this monster as an adult. Like most sex offenders and murderers, I don't see how Castro could ever be reformed.

Hi, Piper! hug

I don't think books, or courses that teach good parenting skills would help selfish people. Sad No They're entirely too wrapped up in themselves to care about anything else. A perfect example of this would be Casey Anthony. No book or course in good parenting would ever have helped her. However sad it might be, it's true. Sad That's why I'll always believe that selfish people should NEVER have children, or pets either for that matter. No

This is just revolting. A horrific crime invoving a 14-year-old who molested an innocent 4-year-old and then drowned him to silence him. This is so ugly. Another young one dead at the hands of a sexual predator. This teen needs to be charged as an adult, never allowed to live again among ordinary law-abiding citizens.

Yep, try him as an adult and keep him out of society for life. Just don't let him out when he turns 18 or 21. He will never change, I can testify for that for the hurt in my own family. Bless you, Little Alex, I wish someone could have been there to help you.
And, you're right Book, I know books would never be able to prevent something like this.. it's just freaking crazy ass people that assault and kill children, pure evil and ignorance.

Mendota kids miss slain friend

MENDOTA -- Sixth-grader Berenice Ramirez stared at the patch of dirt outside her duplex apartment.

Most afternoons, her 4-year-old neighbor, Alex Christopher Mercado, would be playing in the dirt with her two youngest sisters. If they got bored, they would hang out on a bench next to the front door or ride their bikes.

But on this day the dirt patch was empty. The whole neighborhood, in fact, was quiet.

"It's difficult, because he doesn't come and knock on the door and ask for my sisters anymore," said Berenice, 12.

One week after authorities say Alex was sexually assaulted and drowned by a 14-year-old boy next door, the public-housing neighborhood in this dusty corner of Mendota is struggling to come to terms with the horrid details of his death.

Parents say they fear for their children's safety. Some have begun walking their kids to the bus stop around the corner. Groups of kids who often played in front yards were nowhere to be found on a recent afternoon.

"Before, everyone used to be outside," said Gloria Martinez, who lives across the street from Alex's apartment.

I feel bad for Alex's little friends. It must be hard for their parents to explain to them that Alex isn't coming home.

14-Year-Old Mendota Murder Suspect Pleads Not Guilty
Posted: Nov 18, 2009 01:24 AM
http://www.kmph.com/Global/story.asp?S=11526640

The family of four–year–old Alex Mercado showed up to court Tuesday wearing t–shirts that read "Forever in my heart" with Alex’s birthday and the day he was brutally murdered.

Inside the courtroom, his alleged killer entered a plea of not guilty.

14–year–old Raul Castro is accused of sexually molesting Alex Mercado on October 30th at his family's apartment, then drowning the little boy and stuffing his body in a clothes dryer; a series of events Castro confessed to in an interview with Fresno County Sheriff's Deputies.

"Confessions by juveniles are particularly suspect because juveniles are more prone than adults to be susceptible to pressure, they're more likely to say what they think someone wants to hear so that this can be over and done with," Mark King, local defense attorney, said.

King says, despite his confession, Castro’s ‘not guilty’ plea is pretty common.

"By pleading not guilty, you've got something you can bring to the table, which is always: we can change our plea," he said.

King says Castro’s attorney will more than likely begin by ordering a complete psychological make–up of the suspect.

"I can tell you that in all likelihood, if this young man did commit these acts, in all likelihood, he was molested when he was younger," he said.

King also adds he expects to see this case settle before going to trial.

"I don't personally go to trial unless I think I can win. Otherwise, it's a waste of everybody's time. And often the sentence given after the conviction is more harsh than the sentence would've been had the defendant pled to a charge before trial," he said.

Just a month ago neighbors, Raul Castro and Alex Mercado’s family walked out of court after the plea without speaking.

But the pain in each of their hearts was loud and clear.

Castro's lawyer made a request in court that the suspect's brother be able to visit him while he's in custody.

The judge said that decision is up to probation.

Raul Castro is facing charges of first–degree murder, molestation and kidnapping.

He's being tried as an adult.

Castro is expected back in court December 15th for a preliminary hearing.

Cops: Teen Admits Drowning Boy to Hide Sexual Assault
KTLA News

http://www.fox40.com/news/headlines/ktla-boy-dead-dryer,0,4710741.story

MENDOTA, Calif. -- Authorities say a 14 year old boy charged with murder confessed to killing a 4 year old boy because the child was going to reveal that the teen molested him.

Frenso County prosecutors charged Raul Castro as an adult in the case. The teen faces multiple charges, including murder and sodomy.

According to court documents, Castro lured 4 year old Alex Mercado into the bathroom of his home, where he molested and sodomized the child. When Mercado started crying and threated to call his mother, Castro said he held the boy under water in the bathtub until he died. He then hid the body in a clothes dryer.

Mercado's body was found Saturday, 24 hours after he disappeared.

The boy's parents reported him missing Friday afternoon, according to sheriff's spokesman Chris Curtice.

Deputies and dozens of volunteers combed the area through the night, hoping he would turn up alive.

Mourners have placed flowers and teddy bears outside the boy's home.

Castro is expected to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon.

Under California law, a 14-year-old is not eligible for the death penalty or a sentence of life without the possibility of parole. If found guilty, the boy could receive no more than 32 years to life plus 15 years.

No Prelim Hearing for Teen Murder Suspect

Feb. 24, 2010
By Dennis Hart

The 14 year-old Mendota boy accused of killing his 4-year-old neighbor showed up in court Wednesday, and his attorney made sure that evidence would not be presented against him for at least another few weeks.

Defendant Raul Castro's attorney, Barbara O'Neil, told the judge she would give up her client's right to a preliminary hearing, which had been scheduled for Wednesday morning.

"It's just the best thing in a case like this," O'Neil told KMJ News outside the courtroom. However, she refused to explain why she did it.

Court documents show that Castro has admitted killing Alex Mercado last October after he lured the boy into his home, then molested him.

Defense attorney Michael Idiart -- who is not associated with this case -- told KMJ News that giving up a preliminary hearing is unusual, and that attorneys generally only do it when "you don't want to fan the flames of emotion of the victim, and their family, and for the public."

If Castro's preliminary hearing had been held Wednesday, evidence would have been presented against him at that time.

Now, it will not be presented until his trial, weeks from now.

Mendota boy pleads not guilty to murder

Posted at 10:39 AM on Thursday, Mar. 11, 2010
By Pablo Lopez / The Fresno Bee

A 14-year-old boy accused of molesting and killing a 4-year-old Mendota boy pleaded not guilty this morning to murder charges and then waived his right to a speedy trial to give his lawyer time to mount a defense.

Raul Renato Castro said in Fresno County Superior Court that he understood he had a right to a trial within 60 days. But on the advice of his lawyer, Barbara O'Neill, he waived it. Prosecutor Robert Romanacce didn't object. After accepting Castro’s waiver, Judge Jon Nick Kapetan agreed with the lawyer's motion to set a trial date of Oct. 4.

Castro is accused of killing Alex Mercado by drowning the youngster in a bathtub Oct. 30.

This morning, he pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and special allegations, including kidnapping. If convicted, Castro faces a maximum punishment of life in prison with the possibility of parole after 47 years.

After the hearing, Castro returned to the Juvenile Justice Campus south of Fresno, where he is being held in lieu of $2 million bail.

Mendota remembers murdered 4 year-old-boy

Sunday, October 31, 2010

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A valley family is paying tribute to their young son who was murdered exactly one year ago.

Investigators say 4-year-old Alex Mercado was sexually assaulted and killed by his 14-year-old neighbor, Raul Castro.

The crime happened last October inside Castro's Mendota apartment. Saturday, dozens of people gathered in Mendota to memorialize the little boy.

Alex Mercado's death last year touched this entire community. Saturday, dozens gathered at the Mendota community center to remember the happy four-year-old.

Alex's family says the pain of losing him still resonates with them every day. "Our family will never be the same, because of this. Never."

"I still want to call his name. I still want to count seven kids at my dinner table." Alex's mom, Mindy organized the vigil.

Friends and family members offered prayers and heart-felt stories.

"Tragedy should always make us stronger. If we're doing the right thing, it will make us stronger, and that's what's happening here in Mendota," family friend Matt Flood said.

The service also gave Alex's family a chance to say thank you to those who have been there for them since the very the beginning.

"I thought it would be something where you bury your son and everybody forgets. But, as it turns out, nobody has forgotten my son, and that really has touched my heart."

While Alex's family says they are healing, they admit, they still think about his death every day.

Investigators say Alex was playing in his front yard when his neighbor, Raul Castro lured him into his home.

After killing him, the 14-year-old allegedly stuffed Alex's tiny body into a clothing dryer.

Family members are still waiting for justice in the case so they can finally let their little angel rest in peace.

"I think that just because the trial hasn't taken place, I think that's why I haven't found my closure. I think once that happens, it can all sink in."

Jury selection in this case will begin in mid-November. Family members plan to be there throughout the entire trial.

My heart goes out to them.

Castro, now 15, is scheduled to go to trial Dec. 2 in Fresno County Superior Court on murder and sexual assault charges. But before his trial begins, attorney Barbara Hope O'Neill, who represents Castro, wants his confession thrown out.

After Alex's body was discovered, Castro and his mother, Elsa Castro, were taken to the city's police station and placed in separate rooms, O'Neill said in her motion to exclude the confession.

Sheriff's homicide detectives interrogated Castro without his mother present and without her permission, O'Neill said. Raul Castro, who had never been in trouble with the law before, also didn't understand his Miranda rights against self-incrimination, the lawyer said.

Prosecutors will defend the legality of the confession at a hearing Nov. 18.

A Mendota teen on Wednesday waived his right to a jury trial and asked a judge to determine his fate in the killing of a 4-year-old neighbor in October 2009.

Raul Castro, 15, is accused of killing Alex Mercado, whose body was discovered in a clothes dryer in Castro's apartment on Halloween.

Judge Jonathan Conk-lin agreed to Castro's request in Fresno County Superior Court after prosecutor Robert Romanacce didn't object.

He's already told them exactly what he did to this poor baby in graphic detail. I'm with you pi, no mercy. This 15 year old is a child rapist and a murderer, there's no fixing him. I'm kind of surprised the defense advised him a bench trial vs jury trial. With a jury, there's always the possibility of a juror feeling sorry for the defendant (if they were to present bad childhood, etc). But on the other hand, it's quicker and more or less the judge is basically deciding sentencing.

Mendota Teen's Murder Trial Begins in Fresno

By Dennis Hart

Testimony will begin Monday in Fresno Superior Court in a high-profile murder trial -- the one involving a 15-year-old Mendota boy accused of killing his 4-year-old neighbor.

On Friday, Judge Jonathan Conklin decided that defendant Raul Castro will not be shackled when testimony begins and decided that potential witnesses could remain in the courtroom while other witnesses testify.

"It's very important to tell us the truth. Did you do anything to that little boy?" one detective asked.

That's when Castro confessed to killing Alex.

Castro said he lured the boy into the apartment where he lived with his mother, Elsa Castro, who was not home. He said he took the boy into the bathroom and attempted to have sex with him.

But Alex started saying "no" and threatened to tell his own mother, Castro said. Alex then tripped, hit his head on the bathtub and began to cry.

"I panicked. I didn't know what else to do," said Castro, describing how he ran water in the bathtub and put Alex in the water. Alex struggled and Castro said he used his whole body to hold Alex's face under water for several minutes.

Prosecution Rests in Teen's Murder Trial

By Dennis Hart
April 19, 2011

The prosecution rested its case Tuesday in the trial of a 15-year-old accused killer from Mendota, but not before a medical expert testified about what happened to the four-year-old victim.

Dr. Michael Chambliss of the Fresno County Coroner's Office confirmed what everyone had already heard about Alex Mercado's death:

"The cause of death was drowning," Chambliss testified.

4-year-old murder victim's mother breaks silence on case

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

~Snipped~

Mindy Mercado has been in tears several times during the trial and she cried again as she spoke to Action News about the case. She said she wants to be there to make sure justice is served, but as she hears the evidence, her heart is breaking all over again.

Mercado says her 4-year-old son lived for the very thing that killed him. "He had a thrill for water," she said. "He really loved water and it just breaks my heart that [water] caused his death."

Heartbreaking to say the least. Sitting in the courtroom listening to the murderer tell what he did to your baby takes the strength of a thousand men. And Castro shows no remorse, all the more reason he should spend the rest of his days behind bars. Evil.

RIP little Alex afro
