Brittanee Drexel

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WIS) - The mother of a teenager who was last seen in Myrtle Beach in 2009 has released a statement about the discovery of human skeletal remains found approximately six miles from where Brittanee Drexel was last seen.

I would like to thank everyone for their concern and support for my daughter, Brittanee in the recent discovery made in Horry County South Carolina. There are many missing children and adults in the region who have families suffering in anticipation the this latest news and who along side of our family await for a resolution as well.
I ask at this time to please wait for investigators to make a positive identification and be allowed to do their job. We need to respect the process along with the realization this could be any of our missing loved ones.
I encourage all media to re visit the case files and feature our missing. It is so vital to keep these cases out in the public.
Thank you
Dawn Drexel

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The missing person case in Horry County that's likely received the most attention over the years is that of teenager Brittanee Drexel.

It's been nearly 5 years... 1,825 days.

No matter how you put it - each day is a day too long for Dawn Drexel since she last saw her 17-year-old daughter Brittanee alive.

"It's like a dream you never wake out of.." Dawn Drexel said when WBTW spoke to her Tuesday.

"Every time you get a tip in - or something happens - it puts you back on that rollercoaster again."

The saga taking the Elvis family and community by storm  is all too familiar and all too real for Dawn.

6 years of sleepless nights: Mom calls for answers in daughter's disappearance (Videos)

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Nearly six years to the day of her daughter's disappearance, Dawn Drexel plans to honor her daughter, Brittanee.

The teenager was last seen at the Blue Water Resort in Myrtle Beach while visiting the Grand Strand with friends from Rochester, NY. In the days leading up to her getting there, her mom continued to tell her not to go to Myrtle Beach.

“I knew something was going to happen, that's why I didn't want her to come,” shared Dawn Drexel. You could call it a mother's intuition. Dawn Drexel recalls feeling a sense of dread when her daughter, Brittanee talked about going to Myrtle Beach for a week. However, Brittanee seemed set on coming here, which makes Dawn believe her daughter was promised something. Perhaps a meeting with a modeling agent, because it simply doesn't make sense to her that a teenager could disappear from a busy boulevard.

“She didn't have permission to come here, ended up coming anyways. She was only here, for what, 60 hours? And she vanished,” Drexel said. There are cameras on the boulevard, but Dawn was told by detectives they simply weren't working the day her daughter went missing. “Had they been working, you may have seen my daughter get into a vehicle or something?” Drexel wondered.

Dozens march down Ocean Boulevard for Brittanee Drexel (Video)

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Wearing a special shirt and getting a lot of hugs, Brittanee Drexel's mom prepared to make the same walk her daughter made just six years ago.

"Britt probably walked this fast, I wouldn't doubt it," said Dawn Drexel as she was just starting the nearly two-mile walk.

The walk down Ocean Boulevard comes with a different purpose though. The purpose was to bring Brittanee home.

The 17-year-old went missing in 2009 when she came to the area to visit. The last time anyone saw her was when she made this same walk from the Bar Harbor Hotel to the Blue Water Resort.

"I was yelling six years too long,” said Robin Holley, a family friend of the Drexels. “Somebody on that same walk could have been out there today just looking for their victim."

"I think it's very important because it may jog somebody's memory, they may have seen something the night she went missing,” said Dawn Drexel.

While Sunday night's walk came to an end, the search for Brittanee Drexel did not.

Brittanee's case got a new detective:

Snipped quote:  A new detective has been assigned to the Brittanee Drexel case, because the detective who has been covering it has been promoted to sergeant.

The then-17-year-old Drexel disappeared from Myrtle Beach in April 2009 while on spring break from Rochester, N.Y.

Here is a documentary on the case, posted to YouTube in three parts.  If anyone hasn't seen it, it might be worth checking out.

In case it doesn't play consecutively, here are the links for parts two and three.

A sad update on Brittanee's case:

Snipped quote:  Chad Drexel, Brittanee's father, said investigators told him after Brittanee was seen leaving a hotel in Myrtle Beach on a Saturday night, she somehow traveled an hour south and was held for five days, until the following Wednesday. Drexel said investigators believe people came into contact with Brittanee while she was here - people who may be hiding something, or people who did not even realize what they saw.  End quote

This is another article.  The reporting differs slightly in that it suggests that Brittanee may have been held captive for only part of the five-day period.

Snipped quote:  Officials revealed Wednesday that they believe that after Drexel left the Blue Water Resort on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach, she spent several days in the North Charleston-McClellanville-South Georgetown County area, and was held against her will at least part of that time.

Investigators believe that she was killed there.

FBI Special Agent in Charge David Thompson said investigators are certain that Drexel was alive for days after she was last seen on surveillance video leaving Blue Water resort on April 25 and that she was the victim of homicide.

Thompson said investigators feel certain that someone saw Drexel during the days before her death.  He said the FBI is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.  But he also said the FBI will charge anyone who has information if they do not come forward.

This article mentions that "kids in school brag" about knowing who murdered Brittanee.  Brittanee has been missing for seven years.

Snipped quote:  People in the town of McClellanville were shaken up Thursday, after news broke that FBI agents believe missing spring breaker, Brittanee Drexel, was killed there.
"The rumors I've heard from some of the local teachers," Larry Mellichamp, born and raised there, explained. "Kids in the school brag about knowing who did it."
The FBI is not saying what evidence the agency has that leads it to believe Drexel is dead. The Drexel family attorney, though, said a body has still not been found.  End quote

FBI agent: Missing teen Brittanee Drexel was kidnapped, shot and dumped in alligator pit
By Doug Pardue and Glenn Smith
Aug 26 2016 4:12 pm  Aug 26 5:35 pm

~snipped~
A teenage girl who disappeared from Myrtle Beach seven years ago was abducted, gang-raped, shot to death and thrown into an alligator-infested swamp in the dense forests near McClellanville, according to the FBI.

FBI agent Gerrick Munoz this week gave the first detailed account of what investigators think happened to 17-year-old Brittanee Drexel after she disappeared in 2009. His account, contained in a federal court transcript obtained by The Post and Courier, is based on a statement from a prison inmate who claims he was present when she was killed.

Timothy Da’Shaun Taylor

But a McClellanville woman whose husband and son have been implicated by the inmate says the story is just a bunch of “craziness” adopted by federal authorities desperate to solve a vexing case.

For years, tips repeatedly have sent state and local investigators on wild goose chases from Myrtle Beach to McClellanville searching in vain for clues to the young woman’s disappearance or her remains.

A major break came earlier this year when an inmate who had recently been imprisoned to serve a 25-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter gave a “jailhouse confession,” telling authorities that he witnessed what happened to the girl.
