Devon Hollahan -- Found Deceased 12/15/09

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (CBS/AP) Devon Hollahan, a 22-year-old Arizona man who teaches English overseas, vanished during a concert in Germany last weekend. Now his father is fighting to find him and bring him home safely.

Hollahan was last seen at around 3 a.m. Nov. 21 after a concert in Frankfurt, Germany. He was traveling back to a hostel with his friend Josh Friedman, who stopped to ask for directions. When the friend turned back around, Hollahan was gone.

"He had kind of a reputation for sort of disappearing," said Friedman. "So when I turned around and he wasn't there, that was my first thought - 'Oh, he did it again.'"

But when Hollahan didn't show up the next day or return texts or emails, Friedman became worried.

Hollahan's father, Jeff Hollahan, has been on a desperate mission to find his son ever since.

"No clues, no credit card transactions, no cell phone activity, nothing at this point that would indicate to us that anything that might have happened," Jeff Hollahan told CBS News' Debbye Turner Bell. "It's all pure speculation."

It's "every parent's worst nightmare," he told NBC's "Today" show on Friday.

Frankfurt police are now investigating and have appealed for information into Hollahan's disappearance.

Jeff Hollahan plans to travel Sunday from his home in Scottsdale, Ariz., to Germany to help search for his son.

Devon Hollahan had been teaching English in Prague since July.

I hope his father can find a trail, with some answers. When traveling/living abroad like that, I firmly believe people can disappear without a trace. What a nightmare for his family. Especially since he is not communicating by text, cell phone and there's no credit card transactions. And after seeing the movie Hostel, it's scares the h*ll out of me even more. I hope he's safe somewhere and just ignoring them all for some reason.

Body found in Rhine ID’d as missing US man

FRANKFURT - German police said yesterday that the body of a man pulled from the Rhine River last week has been identified as missing 22-year-old American Devon Hollahan.

Frankfurt police said that Hollahan, of Arizona, who was reported missing Nov. 21, was identified through DNA testing. His body was pulled from the Rhine Dec. 15 about 60 miles northwest of Frankfurt.

Police said Hollahan drowned and that foul play is not suspected, adding that he probably fell into the River Main in Frankfurt under the influence of alcohol and drifted into the Rhine. The two rivers intersect near Mainz southwest of Frankfurt.

Jeff Hollahan traveled to Frankfurt to search for his son last month and spent three weeks canvassing the city and tacking up fliers with pictures and contact information. He returned home to Scottsdale, Ariz., last week.

Devon Hollahan, who had been teaching English in Prague, was traveling back to a hostel after a concert in Frankfurt with a friend, who stopped to ask for directions at about 3 a.m. on Nov. 21. When the friend turned back around, Hollahan was gone.

About an hour later, police said, witnesses saw a man who was “without a doubt’’ Hollahan, lying on the sidewalk. When they told him they had called an ambulance, he ran away.

A son late for Christmas now is lost forever

http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/news/articles/2009/12/28/20091228Montini1229.html

Devon Hollahan is late.

He was supposed to have spent Christmas with his family in Scottsdale, but the 22-year-old University of Arizona graduate who had been teaching English in the Czech Republic won't be getting into town until Friday.

"If all goes according to plan, that's when his ashes should arrive," said his father, Jeff.

Hollahan disappeared in Frankfurt, Germany, on Nov. 21.

He and a friend had gone on a weekend trip to catch a concert. After the show the two young Americans drank and socialized with the American band and others, then went looking for the youth hostel where they were scheduled to spend the night.

According to Devon's friend Josh Friedman, the two got separated when Josh approached some people in the street to ask for directions.

"I turned to look for Devon, and he was gone," Josh told me earlier this month.

Within a few days, Jeff Hollahan had left his job as vice president at a Morgan Stanley branch in Scottsdale and was in Frankfurt helping to spread the word of his son's disappearance. He appeared on German and American television news programs. He organized groups of volunteers who handed out thousands of leaflets near the area where Devon was last seen.

Jeff's sister joined him there. Then his wife and daughter. Some of Devon's friends in Prague traveled to Germany to lend a hand, as well as Americans living abroad who'd heard about the young man's disappearance on the news.

"The amount of prayers and support we got from regular folks, from the State Department, from just about everyone was just overwhelming," Jeff told me. "It's just too bad that all of those good wishes and hard work didn't lead to a result that we had hoped and prayed for."

The week before Christmas, the Hollahan family was told that German police had found the body of a young man in the Rhine River, about 62 miles from where Devon had gone missing in Frankfurt. Dental records confirmed that it was Devon. German police believe that Devon, after having had too much to drink, fell into the river and drowned.

"Based on all of our conversations with his friends and such, the likelihood of him getting drunk enough to simply walk into the river were slim and none," Jeff Hollahan told me. "The police may be convinced of that, but we are not. But there is no evidence, no video surveillance, nothing, and at this point it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for us to go after something that is not going to bring Devon back."

Callers on a tip line the Hollahans set up reported that someone matching Devon's description had been in a confrontation with a group of people near the river and was pushed or fell in. It's something the family will never know for sure.

There will not be a public memorial service for Devon.

"He would be mortified by such a thing," said his father.

The family plans to hold a celebration of Devon's life and to set up some type of scholarship program for teachers in Devon's name, but that is down the road.

"We're dealing with it, but still in shock," Jeff said. "You have good moments and bad ones. You know that you have to move on, but the thought of doing so without a son, a brother, is very hard to do. It will take some time. A lot of time."

There is no end to the hard days. Like Christmas, which Jeff called a "long, melancholy day." Like Friday, when Devon's ashes are set to arrive. Like today, when the remains of a funny, promising young man, a son, a brother, a teacher, are scheduled to be cremated in Germany.
