Oil Leaking From Rig Blast Site, Coast Guard Says

NEW ORLEANS (April 24) -- An oil well at the site of a drilling platform that exploded and sunk into the Gulf of Mexico is leaking 1,000 barrels of oil per day, a Coast Guard commander said today.

Rear Adm. Mary Landry said the leak was discovered earlier today. She said the well is leaking at a rate of 1,000 barrels of oil per day, from the sea bed 5,000 feet below the gulf's surface.

The leak is at the site where a massive oil rig sank into the gulf on Thursday, requiring the evacuation of 115 workers. Eleven workers are presumed to have died in the blast that two days earlier consumed the platform in flames.

A boat with an oil boom on Friday tries to contain oil spilled from the explosion and collapse of the Deepwater Horizon. Though officials previously said that no oil appeared to be leaking at the site, a Coast Guard commander said Saturday that an oil well at the drilling platform is exuding nearly 1,000 barrels of oil per day.

My family in Sarasota, FL told me that there is a bad smell hanging in the air there. They finally announced on the news that it is coming from the oil spill and that anyone with breathing difficulties should stay indoors or wear masks.

Here's some hopeful news:

BP: Tube is siphoning oil from leak
'So far it's working extremely well,' company VP says of strategy

msnbc.com news services

HOUSTON - Reporting its first success in containing the massive Gulf oil leak nearly a month after it started, BP on Sunday said oil and natural gas were flowing via a mile-long pipe to a ship at the surface.

Yet even as the company reported the success, scientists warned oil that has already spewed into the Gulf could have dire consequences for the environment. Computer models show the black ooze might have already entered a major current flowing toward the Florida Keys, a researcher said Sunday.

The contraption used by BP was hooked up successfully and sucking oil from a pipe at the blown well Sunday afternoon after being hindered by several setbacks. Engineers remotely guiding robot submersibles had worked since Friday to place the four-inch tube into a 21-inch pipe nearly a mile below the sea.

Here's a slideshow of the Gulf area. There's 3 sets of pictures all together. 13 in the first, 53 in the second and 10 in the third. Just keep clicking the right arrow.

You know this is getting to be pretty scary, now they are talking pumping mud over the leak. They are just at a loss at what to do. I've seen so many sad videos of the local people in the fishing industry there. The oil has also moved into the marshes, which is disastrous as well.

This just makes me so sick...We/mankind has ruined a precious commodity...the seafood industry dependent upon this body of water...not to mention the habitats destroyed and life forms other than those that are indigenous to the seas...I pray that a solution is found quickly...and one that will not cause more harm than has already been done...

I got this video in my e-mail the other day...kind of interesting.

Leave it to the Cajuns to find a fix for the spill clean up…BP and the Fed and State Governments should watch this: Watch it to the end.
