The Michigan State Police plan to alert hunters about specific things to look for that may help find her.

With hunting season beginning, professional searches may become difficult, Lt. Mike Risko told 24 Hour News 8. That's why they hope to enlist the help of hunters.

The items that police want people to look for include the clothes that Venus was wearing when she was last seen, and other items that police believe Doug Stewart had at the time Venus disappeared.

"What we don't want to have happen is a hunter or farmer go into a field and come across something and not know it," said Lt. Mike Risko, Michigan State Police. "If you come across it, stop right there, call us."

State police say that in addition to the gray t-shirt, pajama bottoms and Croc-style shoes that Venus was wearing when she disappeared, they are also looking for disturbed earth.

Psychic takes up case of wife who vanished; Police believe Venus Stewart was murdered, but can't find her body

Published: Saturday, September 18, 2010, 8:36 PM
Kathy Jessup | Kalamazoo Gazette

COLON — A middle-aged Indiana woman soon will drive to the Colon Township residence where 32-year-old Venus Stewart vanished last April.

She’ll wait to “feel the vibrations” of Stewart’s lingering presence, hoping to follow that “electricity” to the young mother’s body, wherever it rests.

Gale St. John, 50, who lives near Ft. Wayne, Ind., says there’ll be no spectacle “where I’ll be standing in the middle of the street, making strange noises” when she directs her “psychic-detective” powers toward finding the missing woman.

Michigan State Police Detective Michael Scott, the lead investigator in Stewart’s case, says more than two dozen self-described psychics have contacted authorities since April with “visions, feelings and dreams” about where Venus Stewart may be.

However, police say none of those tips has advanced the case in which Venus’ estranged husband Douglas is charged with her murder.

I didn't know Gale St. John was in Indiana! Is she the same one who did a youtube video looking for Caylee?

Psychic comes up empty in search for Venus: Indiana woman roamed rural St. Joe County in search of missing woman

Published: Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 9:26 AM
Kathy Jessup | Kalamazoo Gazette

~Snipped~

St. John has come to St. Joseph County with one goal: to find the body of Venus Stewart.

There was no success Tuesday, just places that can be crossed off the list and new locations to be added.

Police believe Venus Stewart is dead and her estranged husband, Douglas Stewart, has been charged with murder. The trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 1.

St. John, a blunt, no-nonsense, 50-year-old, said Tuesday she believes police could be on the wrong track in locating Stewart’s body. She claims vibrations, visions and a faint message she says she heard from Venus en route to Colon on Tuesday are pointing her in another, more distant direction.

And Schoolcraft, a place where the couple lived before moving to Virginia several years ago, reoccurs in disconnected clues, she said.

She suspects Doug Stewart may have planted “red herrings” in clues about where and when he allegedly disposed of his wife’s body in an attempt to throw off police.

Stewart trial: Hearsay decision pending
Trial on hold until appellate decision

Prosecutors in the case want several witnesses to tell the St. Joseph County court what Venus apparently told them, about how scared she was of her husband.

Venus told several people over a period of time Doug wanted to "kill her and come back for the kids," according to a prosecution document.

She was "scared of her husband," the document states, and "if she left him, he would hunt her down and kill her."

The court should hear what Venus' friends and family have to say because Venus isn't here to testify, prosecutors said.

Doug Stewart murder trial on hold as defense attorneys try to have judge disqualified

Updated: Friday, November 05, 2010, 8:03 AM
Rex Hall Jr. | Kalamazoo Gazette

~Snipped~

CENTREVILLE — St. Joseph County Circuit Judge Paul Stutesman has postponed the murder trial of Doug Stewart pending an appeal seeking to disqualify the judge from the case.

Stutesman issued the postponement Monday, one week after attorneys Jeffrey M. Schroeder and Kymberly R. Schroeder filed their appeal, court documents show. St. Joseph County Prosecutor John McDonough has until Nov. 15 to file an answer to the appeal.

~Snipped~

In that motion, the Schroeders alleged that Stutesman “provided assistance to the prosecution in an effort to help the prosecution improve its case over the defense.”

The motion said that Stutesman provided the assistance to McDonough following a conference call between the judge, McDonough and the Schroeders on Sept. 22. When the conference call was completed, the Schroeders say, Stutesman’s speaker phone did not hang up and they were able to overhear the judge and McDonough “continue to discuss the case specifically.”

During the discussion between Stutesman and McDonough, the motion said, McDonough “continued to protest having to list his witnesses;” Stutesman gave McDonough direction on how to answer a discovery request by the defense team “in a minimal fashion”; that Stutesman told McDonough he did not believe the Schroeders had any motions and “was seeking an adjournment of the trial,” and McDonough “asserted to the judge that defense counsel plays dirty.”

Trial in Venus Stewart disappearance to proceed after appeals court denies disqualification of St. Joseph County judge

Updated: Friday, November 26, 2010, 4:36 PM

LANSING — The Michigan Court of Appeals has denied a motion filed by the attorneys for Doug Stewart seeking to disqualify the judge from the case.

St. Joseph County Circuit Judge Paul Stutesman had postponed proceedings pending a decision on the appeal.

The trial is now scheduled to begin in January, according to the court of appeals website.

Stewart, 29, is charged with felony murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder in connection with the April 26 abduction and slaying of his estranged wife, Venus Stewart.

Jury Selection Continues In Venus Stewart Case

Posted Saturday February 19, 2011

CENTREVILLE (WTVB) - Day one of jury selection in the Doug Stewart murder trial in Centreville was long and tedious and may be repeated several times as Judge Paul Stutesman is doing all he can to seat a jury in his St. Joseph County Circuit Courtroom.

Forty-Eight potential jurors cleared the first two screenings on Friday. About 30 were dismissed because serving on a month-long trial would be a hardship for them and about 30 more were dismissed because they had heard enough about the case in the media to form an opinion.

Jury selected in Stewart murder trial

Trial to begin soon

Updated: Tuesday, 22 Feb 2011, 6:36 PM EST
By Dani Carlson

CENTREVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) - A jury has been seated for the murder trial of Doug Stewart, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in Centreville.

Tuesday marked the second day of jury selection, and the final decision was made around 5:20 p.m.

Doug is accused of killing his estranged wife, Venus Stewart, who was last seen April 26, 2010, at her parents' Colon Township home, where she had been staying with the couple's two children while Doug remained in Newport News, Va.

Tuesday's selection process started a little later than usual -- around 9:30 a.m., due to the weather and icy roadways that may have been slowing people down.

Attorneys from both the prosecution and the defense spent seven hours questioning potential jurors. The prosecution mostly asked whether people thought a conviction was possible without a body, and used a hypothetical example involving someone who stole a candy bar from a store and then ate it.

Venus Stewart's neighbor: Doug Stewart said he was 'specifically trained how to kill people'

Updated: Friday, February 25, 2011, 11:43 AM
By Rex Hall Jr. | Kalamazoo Gazette

CENTREVILLE — A former neighbor of Doug and Venus Stewart testified Friday — outside the presence of the jury — that Doug Stewart once told her about his previous service in the military and “that he was specifically trained how to kill people.”

“He told me he knew how to kill someone in 30 seconds and tried to show me how it's done,” said Wendy Burton, who lived near the Stewarts from 2006 to 2007 in Schoolcraft and took care of the Stewarts' two daughters at her home-based daycare center. “He just showed me with his arm how he can put someone in a hold and press some part of the body in the neck and they'll just pass out in 30 seconds and it will kill them.”

According to Dani Carlson's Twitter, Ricky Spencer has been offered immunity in Michigan, but can be charged with murder and receive the death penalty in Ohio, Maryland, or Virginia. Spencer understands this and still wants to testify. Spencer's attorney says the other states don't want to prosecute him.

Testimony has ended for the day and will resume Monday morning with Spencer on the stand.

Key Witness: "Doug Stewart Had a Plan" for Killing Venus

Ricky Spencer says he agreed to provide Stewart's Alibi

Spencer says Doug claimed his daughters were being physically abused by Venus, and that is why he agreed to be Doug's alibi. Spencer said Doug told him, "and if I find out one day that they (the girls) were hurt or dead, I would go on a rampage. I would go after her family, the lawyers, the jury." That statement led the defense to call for a mistrial, based on the threat against the jury. The judge denied the request.

Neighbor says Doug Stewart had scratches, bruises on his neck after Venus Stewart went missing

CENTREVILLE — A man who lived in the same Newport News, Va., apartment complex as Doug and Venus Stewart told jurors Tuesday he noticed Doug Stewart had scratches and bruises on his neck, forearms and thighs just a few days after Venus Stewart was reported missing in Michigan.

James Weaver said he noticed the marks on Doug Stewart, who was wearing shorts and a T-shirt, during a conversation he, Stewart and another tenant had at their apartment complex three to four days after Venus Stewart's April 26 abduction and alleged slaying.

“It was kind of odd because he was telling us what a bad person she was,” Weaver said. “He had bruises and scratches on his neck, his forearms and his thighs.”

Doug Stewart purchased cell phones before Venus Stewart went missing, witnesses say

CENTREVILLE — During two separate visits to a Hampton, Va., Walmart in April, Doug Stewart purchased three Tracfone cellular phones, a Newport News, Va., Police detective testified Thursday in St. Joseph County Circuit Court.

Detective Todd Filer said he obtained the information from two Walmart receipts dated April 14 and April 25 and from banking records from Langley Federal Credit Union, a Newport News bank where Stewart held an account.

The latter purchase date came just one day before Stewart's estranged wife, Venus Stewart, disappeared outside her parents' Colon Township home.

Doug Stewart bought shovel, tarp, hat, gloves from Walmart on day before Venus Stewart went missing, witnesses say

Published: Thursday, March 03, 2011, 5:42 PM

CENTREVILLE — The man entered the Walmart store in rural Van Wert, Ohio, last April dressed in a striped polo shirt and caught the eye of several employees because of the flowered swimming trunks he was wearing.

He trolled the store's aisles for about 10 minutes before leaving with his items he purchased — a hat, gloves, tarp and shovel.

On Thursday, three employees from the store took the stand and identified the man as Doug Stewart during the eighth day of testimony in the Venus Stewart murder trial. The items Doug Stewart bought, according to testimony, were purchased the day before Venus Stewart, 32, disappeared outside her parents' Colon Township home.

A big DUH for Doug......between this and then talking with neighbors sporting very visible scratches and bruises while telling them what a bad person Venus is.

Blood, DNA introduced in Stewart trial

Forensic scientists testify through the day

Updated: Saturday, 05 Mar 2011, 8:38 AM EST

~Snipped~

Computer analysis was a topic of testimony, as well.

MSP computer analyst Rebecca MacArthur testified she looked at activity on an HP laptop that she was told belonged to Doug.

On April 26, 2010, that laptop went to MySpace, Facebook and the Delaware Technical Community College, among other places, she testified. That is the day Venus disappeared, and the day Ricky Spencer testified he was in Virginia impersonating Doug. Spencer is from Delaware, and attended the Delaware Technical Community College.

Testimony continues in Stewart trial

March 04, 2011 6:32 PM

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – On Friday, forensic experts took the stand in Doug Stewart's murder trial.

They analyzed evidence looking for anything that could be connected to Stewart or his missing wife, Venus. Stewart is accused of murdering Venus.

Investigators were looking for blood, DNA and fingerprints.

The bottom line is that from all the samples taken into evidence, nothing shows a blood or DNA connection to Venus Stewart.

Based on what I've seen, I would convict Doug even without a body or DNA evidence. Ricky Spencer is a huge problem for the defense, and I haven't seen anything that would discredit his testimony.

It would also be a huge stretch to believe that Doug drove all the way to an Ohio Walmart the evening before Venus disappeared, asked for lime, and bought a hat, gloves, shovel, and a tarp, but had nothing to do with her disappearance.

I totally agree with you, J4A. It's certainly evident why they didn't need to find Venus' body to bring him to trial for her murder. This man is truly arrogant and completely ignorant to think he could commit the perfect crime, even with his "perfect" alibi that backfired on him. I hope one day that she will be found so her parents and family can give her a proper burial.

Before Venus Stewart vanished, 'soaking wet' man spotted near her parents' home, witnesses say

Published: Monday, March 07, 2011, 12:08 PM

Lena Powell testified that she saw a man on the Sunday before Venus Stewart went missing who was “soaking wet from head to toe” and wearing an Army coat walking down the dirt road by her home in Colon where she had lived with Mark Thomason.

The man didn't say his name but asked for directions and then for a ride.

At first, the stranger seemed friendly, but his demeanor changed and he acted “shaky” after Powell went to get Thomason, she testified.

“He was really nervous, wet, scared like he did something wrong,” testified Thomason, who now lives in Battle Creek.

Thomason said the man was in his 30s, about 5-foot-6 or 5-foot-8, with a thick mustache.

“Do you remember the person you saw in April of last year?” Kymberly Schroder, one of Doug Stewart's attorneys, asked Thomason during cross-examination.

She asked Thomason if he recognized the mustached man in the courtroom.

“No, but there's a similarity,” Thomason said, looking across the courtroom at Doug Stewart.

~

Brian Wages, who occasionally drives through Colon for work, said a car with Virginia license plates caught his attention because the driver was traveling 15 mph in a 55 mph zone on M-60.

Wages, of Burlington, said he assumed the driver was weary from a long trip.

He also testified he saw a woman in a the passenger seat with her head against the window with what appeared to be a sleeping bag by her. Wages said he assumed the woman was sleeping.

Wages said he saw the car at about 7:20 a.m. on a Monday or Tuesday in April and then alerted police about the car after he realized it might be connected to Venus Stewart's disappearance.

Donna Cratsenburg Scott, who had lived across the street from the Stewart family, said she saw a silver-colored Sedan on April 25 that looked like the one that belonged to Venus and Doug Stewart.

“It caught my attention, driving slowly down the street,” said Scott, of Schoolcraft.

Stewart Found Guilty

March 12, 2011 3 hours, 36 minutes ago

CENTREVILLE (WTVB) - Guilty. That’s the verdict that came down late Friday morning in the Doug Stewart murder trial in Centerville. The jury deliberated for a little less than 3 hours today before convicting Stewart in the premeditated killing of his estranged wife, Bronson high school graduate Venus Stewart. He was also found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder.

Doug Stewart faces a mandatory life prison term without chance of parole when he’s sentenced on April 18th. The conviction concluded a three week long trial which saw closing arguments Thursday after the defense presented no witnesses. Venus went missing from outside her parent’s home in Colon Township at the end of April last year. The disappearance followed a bitter custody dispute. Venus Stewart’s body has not been found.

I'm glad justice has been served. The circumstantial evidence from the Walmart puchases tied in nicely with Richard Spencer's testimony, and the fact that a tarp wrapper with Doug's fingerprint was found outside of the home of Venus' parents.

I hope Casey's attorneys are paying attention. Juries will use common sense and convict, even if there isn't a body, or even if there isn't any DNA linking the obvious culprit to the body.

I was thinking the same thing, J4A. In Casey's case, the first thing the jurors will hear is that Caylee was "missing" for 31 days and never reported. Then Cindy's 911 call, the smell of death on record by family members and LE, the trip to Universal to her non existent job........I don't see any jury member getting past the facts of the first 24 hours once LE was involved.

You mentioned in another thread about the death penalty being a leverage for a murderer to tell where they left their victim(s). A state representative is going to introduce a bill banning Ohio's death penalty. I hate to see that happen mainly for that reason. Unfortunately, I doubt that Stewart will ever tell what he did with Venus. Venus' family needs to know where she was left. He's behind bars for life, where he belongs. But her loved ones are suffering more than her being tragically taken from their lives, they still don't know where she is. I imagine that is another form of torture for them.

Stewart sent to prison for wife’s murder

By Terry Katz katz@sturgisjournal.com
Sturgis Journal

Centreville, Mich. —

“A real man is supposed to protect his wife and kids. You victimized your child, then murdered your wife.”

That is how Dustin Jasper of Sturgis described Douglas Stewart minutes before Stewart was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of Venus Stewart, Jasper’s sister.

Jasper spoke on behalf of family members in the courtroom of St. Joseph County Circuit Judge Paul Stutesman.

Jasper read words written by his mother, Therese McComb: “Don’t you miss her? Don’t you realize how much Brook and Rachel need their mother? This just shows how much you didn’t love them and saw them as pawns to hunt Venus. You’re hurting Mom by not telling where she is at to have a proper burial.”

Remains of a woman have been found on vacant property in Comstock Township, MI which is about an hour north of where Venus disappeared. It would be great if Venus has finally been found, but none of the articles I've read have mentioned any possible connection to Venus.

I finally found one article that mentions a possible connection to Venus.

Sheriff Fuller also said that the Venus Stewart case also fits the profile.

Stewart disappeared in St. Joseph County last year, her husband was convicted of her murder but her body was never found.

Sheriff Fuller has contacted other area law enforcement agencies to make them aware of what they have found.

By Rex Hall Jr. | Kalamazoo Gazette

The television program "Dateline NBC" plans to air its story about the Venus Stewart case on Friday, according to a producer with the show.

The program is scheduled to run from 9:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., immediately after a 90-minute finale of the show "Friday Night Lights."

A crew from the program covered the trial earlier this year that ended in the conviction of Stewart's husband, Doug Stewart, for first-degree murder.

Though his parents, Doug Stewart Sr. and Karol Stewart, did not want to appear on camera, they spoke with 24 Hour News 8 on Tuesday night.

Among other things, they said they're unhappy with their son's attorneys and still believe he's innocent . Further, they said they haven't seen any proof that Venus Stewart is even dead.
