Pediatrician testifies in toddler rape case

Updated at 05:11 PM today

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Another day of disturbing testimony in the trial of a man accused of beating and sexually abusing a 4-year old girl, who later died from her injuries.

Short article, not much info. The pediatrician testifies. I can only imagine how heart wrenching that was.

Experts testify in toddler rape case

Tuesday, September 14, 201

~Snipped~

Van Buren said, "It's never been our claim that there was not a vaginal injury. It's our claim that the vaginal injury was not part of a sexual assault."

Coe himself sat expressionless as the prosecution called its witnesses.
Crime scene investigator Mark McElvaney described what he found at the girl's house the morning after she died -- blood spots and smears through the two story house. He also described a second visit to the home in July 2009, to go through garbage found in the garage, including a pair of toddler girl's underwear.

The prosecutor asked, "What is the reason you collected these underwear?"

McElvaney answered, "Because I was still looking for evidence relating to a sexual assault."

Prosecutor says Coe raped 4-year-old

Published by: The Brenahm Banner Press - Brenham, Tx
Wednesday, September 15, 2010 1:31 PM CDT

HOUSTON — Prosecutors here painted a brutal picture of Lucas Coe, accused of sexually assaulting 4-year-old Emma Thompson at the start of Coe’s trial Tuesday.

Coe’s trial on a super-aggravated sexual assault charge began with Assistant Harris County District Attorney Tina Ansari bluntly telling jurors that Coe raped the child shortly before her death in June 2009.

“The defendant shoved an object or his male sexual organ into that poor child and ripped her apart,” Ansari told jurors during her opening statements.

Prosecutors decided to try Coe on a super-aggravated sexual assault of a child because if convicted, he would not be eligible for parole. Prosecutors have said it is a stricter punishment for a crime that is easier to prove than trying to convict him for the girl’s death.

Ansari also told jurors that evidence would show that Emma had a “giant tear of her vagina, not a baby tear, but a giant tear.”

COE TRIAL CONTINUES

(SEPTEMBER 15TH, 2010)

The child sex assault trial of Lucas Coe will continue today in Houston.

In opening statements prosecutors noted that four-year old Emma Thompson had over 70 bruises on her body when she died in June of last year. Emergency room doctors said she had a severed liver and was suffering from severe abdominal pains.

Coe is not charged with her death but he is accused of aggravated sexual assault of a child. Emma’s mother, 34-year old Abigail Young, of Brenham was convicted in July of child abuse by neglect for failing to protect her child.

Prosecutors put on their first witness—a nurse who saw Emma the day she died. They will also be presenting to the jury a number of gruesome autopsy photos. Prosecution witnesses who will be called to testify in the case include Emma Thompson’s older half-sister, as well as her pediatrician.

The charges against Coe is super-aggravated. If he is convicted, he will serve his entire sentence and will not be eligible for parole. The penalty range in this case is 25 to 99 years in prison.

Gruesome autopsy photos! That is a good description, too!

On the way home, I had the radio on KTEX (FM) - Bryan, Tx, and I heard an update of today's trial proceedings. Unfortunately, they do not have a web page for the news like KWHI does!

KTEX is KWHI - AM's, Brenham, Tx. sister station.
~~~~~~~~~
Also, forgot to mention this last night . . . Associated Press (AP) has picked up the story . . . . Lucas Coe's trial and I see that other TV stations in Texas are covering it via AP!
Earlier I saw some more cities in Tx that are covering it.
Serenity wrote:This story has touched my heart. Emma is dancing with Jesus in heaven and watching over her other sisters. There are so many cases that bother me including Nixzmary Brown and baby Briana. I am a nurse and this bothers me. It doesn't take a degree to be wise to know that Herpes on the hands, mouth, and vagina is not transmitted by a toilet seat. How can anyone practice as a nurse and care for others the next day when your own child has recently passed away in such a gruesome way? I bet she was ashamed to get arrested at work. I can't judge, but this story is sick! Why is the mother still in jail and not prison? What is up with the appeal I read? She has not accepted the verdict I suppose. I pray justice is served for this precious child's soul. It doesn't matter how, as long as it is done and served to the greatest ability the justice system will allow. Why has a long tail that doesn't end I always heard. Thanks for the Cwith all the details! Is Coe just sitting expressionless? Hmph. I wonder if Abby gets all the details in "jail."
Hi, Serenity! It is a very heart werenching trial - just very brutal and horrific about Emma!
The reason Young is still in the Harris County Jail is because Texas Department of Corrections (TDC) will notify the jail when they are ready for Young to be sent to a prison in Texas.
She will be in for a rude awakening. No luxury home for her! Just the gray bar hotel! In Texas, the county jails are air conditioned but the prisons are not. So, the former "gifted nurse" as she was described by some in 2009, better get ready to sweat.
Yes, Coe is sitting quietly with very little expression. I noticed when the Prosecutors showed the Emergency Room photos of Emma, Coe did not look at the big screens hung from the wall in the court room.
There are 3. Coe looked down for the most part.
But . . . . when they showed the autopsy pictures of the vaginal area, he was looking at the screen. And . . . the pictures are gruesome and very graphic! Giant, giant vaginal tear like you would not believe and to think Emma was only 4 (turned 4 in March, 2009) .
Young has the right to appeal per Texas law. I have not been able to read the appeal yet. Hopefully, it will be available to the public soon. It is in the Fourteenth Court of Appeals. So, I'll just patiently wait for it to become available to the public and we will all know what she is appealing.
I would think the only way Young would get info on the trial is if she watches TV. I don't know what Harris County Jail has for the inmates regarding TV. I know our county jail does not have TV in the cells for the inmates.
You said you are a nurse. Two ER nurses testified yesterday and it was heart wrenching. The RN who was responsible for Room 11, where Emma was broke down and cried during her testimony.
Re: Emma Thompson -- Deceased 6/27/09 (Thread #1)
Post by Ann - Tx on Thu Sep 16, 2010 2:01 am
I have worked on an update for the past hour and I just accidentally poofed it. I don't believe it. I need to get up at 5 a.m. so I need to go to sleep soon. I will have to write a more detail update tomorrow.
Quickly, Dr. Sane continued her testimony today. Lots of discussion about Herpes Simplex II. On 2-26-10, Coe and Young tested Positive for Herpes Simplex II (genitial herpes). On 10-2-09, Coe tested positive for HS II.
Ben Thompson, Emma's father tested negative.
There was a lot of testimony on Emma's huge vaginal tear. Autopsy photos of the vaginal area were shown and Dr. Sane answered questions by the Prosecutors.
No way was the giant tear caused by straddle as the Defense claims per the Dr.
The Defense cross examined Dr. Sane and clearly tried to discredit her. Dr. Sane is awesome and the Defense's tactic backfired in my opinion! She ended up telling the Defense that she sees 30 patients a day - 5 days a week or 150 patients a week.
On 6-8-09 when Dr. Sane examined Emma, she had a high fever of 102 and blisters on her hand, in her mouth and vaginal area. When the test results came back, Emma tested positive for Herpes Simplex II (Genital Herpes). She called Young immediately and told her she was going to report it to CPS for possible sexual abuse. Dr. Sane did so after talking to Young.
When Young brought Emma in on June 8, Young stated Emma is bruising easily. She checked Emma for bruises. Emma had a bruise on the cheek to her forehead, 2 bruises on the chest wall that looked like a thumb print, 1 above her belly button, and numerous bruises on her legs. Also has burning urination.
On 6-27-10, phone records indicate Young called Dr. Sane the following times:
6:30 pm
6:31 pm
8:22 pm
8:25 pm
8:29 p.m
The Answering service answered all calls through 8:25. Dr. Sane called Young at 8:29. The call lasted 9 minutes. Young said Emma was having painful urination and her urine smelled real bad. No fever. Wanted Dr. Sane to prescribe a certain medication. Dr. Sane said she could not without testing and examining Emma. Dr. Sane told Young to take Emma to the ER.
On Monday, Young called Dr. Sane and told her Emma died that night.
The Defense is focusing on Emma having a straddle injury. Not possible per the doctor. No straddle injury would cause the huge vaginal injury Emma had.
The next witness was a neighbor (Jennifer) of Young's who lives across the street. The neighbor will resume testimony tomorrow. Jennifer's testimony was stopped so Lucas Coe's sister could testify. At that point, she had to testify so Jennifer could testify about other things. Hearsay is inadmissible.
Jennifer told of how she turned in to her subdivision and saw the ambulance (EMS) and another vehicle but at the time did not know it was Young and Emma. Two lanes were blocked and she had to go around.
I'll have to write the details tomorrow, but Jennifer did say she saw Coe make a phone call and he said, "Mom, Emma's dead. She is gone." This was as they looked down the road to where the EMS flashing lights were.
Christy, another neighbor took Coe and his 4 year old daughter, Emma Coe, to a Jack in the Box near the subdivision. Coe's sister and her husband picked them up. They met Coe's mom in Tomball, Tx and Lucas and Emma left with her.
I don't have time to write the details tonight but Mickey, Coe's sister testified that the night of 6-27-09, she got several calls from her mom and she did not answer. She took a shower and while doing so her mom called again. Mickey's husband answered and told Mickey her mom called. Could not testify to what was said (hearsay). Mickey called her mom and her mom told Mickey to go and pick Coe and Emma up at the Jack in the Box. Mickey and her husband did.
Mickey testified that Coe did not have a place of his own - no residence! He would stay at his mom's, Mickey's home and Abigail's but for about 3 months he was staying at Young's.
Interesting testimony about that! I will have to write about it tonight. It's almost 1 a.m. and I have to get up in a few hours. Have to go to sleep first!
Coe had a vehicle for a short while. Was not disclosed what happened to it or why he was not driving it. He mostly drove Young's vehicle.
On Wednesday afternoon, Laura, Young's oldest daughter was going to do a video testimony for the Defense. It is done in a special room set up for that type of testimony.
The Judge and Prosecutors have to be present so the jury was excused shortly after noon and was told the trial would resume tomorrow morning.
No spectators could watch the testimony.
I had some business to take care of in Houston next week so I did it yesterday afternoon and now I am free to attend the rest of the trial next week.
Good night! Tomorrow Jennifer's testimony will resume and I think other neighbors will testify.
I am so sorry about my detailed report going poof. I still don't believe it.
Thank you for all the updates Ann. Defense attorneys are good at insulting our intelligence when the defendant is obviously guilty. We've seen it often in the Anthony case. Prosecutor says 4-year-old Emma Thompson was raped before death
Posted on September 15, 2010 at 9:39 AM
HOUSTON—A prosecutor says a Houston-area man who was dating a nurse raped her 4-year-old daughter before the child died last year.
Testimony was scheduled to resume Wednesday in the Houston aggravated sexual assault trial of Lucas Coe.
An autopsy found that Emma Thompson had a severed pancreas and fractured skull.
Prosecutor Tina Ansari, during opening statements Tuesday, said medical personnel will testify that the child also had a torn vagina.
A jury in July convicted the girl’s mother, Abigail Young of Spring, of injury to a child by ommission and ordered 20 years in prison. Ansari says the couple and the victim all had genital herpes.
Defense attorney William Van Buren says the child was not sexually assaulted and the herpes could have been transmitted by casual contact
http://www.khou.com/news/local/Prosecutor-says-4-year-old-Emma-Thompson-was-raped-before-death-102955814.html
Defense attorneys wonder WHY they are hated! Mad
First I feel the mother shouldv'e received LWOP for her part in this horrific, depraved act upon her precious child not 20 years! This "so called" mother (who so does not deserve that title) should have been the protector of Emma not one who participated in her demise. Where would a child of 4 y/o contract an STD if this man didn't give it to her since they both had herpes? How did her vagina get torn, her skull fractured and a severed pancreas..IMO, this is a call for the DP for both of these monsters...but mother got off with a lenient sentence. I do hope it's harsher for this monster...Why are jurors so liberal?
Poor Emma.... Sad
Rest Peacefully Emma
I feel the same way. The (so called) mother should have gotten LWOP IMO too. Mothers are supposed to protect their children. I am throughly disgusted to know the details of the childs injuries. And for the Defense to say there is no idea of "who had it first" when referencing the herpe's, omg! I wonder if that is how the same person would feel if it was THEIR CHILD???
RIP Emma....the pain is over.
Sister of victim testifies in toddler rape case
Thursday, September 16, 2010
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It was another day of emotional testimony in the trial of Lucas Coe, who is accused of sexually and physically abusing his girlfriend's 4-year-old daughter, Emma Thompson, who later died. On Thursday, the jury watched videotaped testimony from Thompson's 11-year-old sister. She says on the day Emma died, she heard a loud bang from the kitchen. The sister saw Coe with Emma who was bleeding from her head.
Emma went to take a nap, but was later found unresponsive by their mother. The mother, Abigail Young, is serving a 20-year sentence for failing to protect her daughter. She is not expected to testify in this trial.
Ann thanks for the welcome, yes I am a RN (ER). I would cry too! I saw a clip of the chron video of baby Emma. I am sooooooooo upset! This world is sooooooooo SICK! I don't agree with the older sister being involved. That is too traumatizing. To me, they have enough evidence/witnesses. They do not need an 11 year old's testimony to make a decision.
Thank you for all the updates Ann. Defense attorneys are good at insulting our intelligence when the defendant is obviously guilty. We've seen it often in the Anthony case. I can't even imagine how hard it is to sit in the courtroom and look at those pictures. Do you have a good view of the jury and have you been able to see any of their reactions to the gruesome pictures and testimony?
Yes, J4A, it is difficult to sit in the court room and listen to some of the testimony and look at the horrific pictures of precious little Emma's injuries especially the vaginal tear. Poor, poor Emma! The pain and suffering Emma went through, is something a child should never, ever have to endure.
Most of the time, I have been sitting in the first pew behind the Prosecutors in support of justice for Emma! I am a few feet away from the jury. I can clearly see all of the jurors. They are very attentive and disclose no expressions regarding the testimony or when looking at the pictures.
Emma's paternal grandfather has been at the trial everyday. Yesterday one of his sons was at the trial. Very nice people! We usually sit together. They have shared some info with me but out of respect for them, I prefer not to put it on this comment board. I feel so sorry for them. It is commendable, as difficult as it may be to listen to the testimony and see the pictures, they are there behind the Prosecutors in support of Emma.
There are a lot of media in the court room taking notes. There are no maternal members of Emma's family there. However, anyone that testifies can not be in the court room. Amanda Young Matthew, Emma's aunt, testified today so therefore she can not be in the Court Room. In 2009, I've seen interviews with Amanda where she stated she is seeking justice for her niece, Emma. I have not seen Emma's maternal grandmother, Margie Routt Young. Maybe it is because she has to testify in the trial. I would hope that is why she is not in the court room supporting the State of Texas seeking justice for Emma Thompson.
Tomorrow Ben Thompson, Emma's father is suppose to testify. Now I would think that would be heart breaking, emotional testimony. If you recall, per testimony in Abigail Young's trial, Ben noticed bruises on Emma and demanded that Young take Emma to her Doctor or he would.
Piper, you welcome and thank you, Julie, J4H and others (don't have time to look up-thread) for keeping Emma's thread updated.
Dr. Sane testified on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. Both days she state that Emma told her that "Luke holds me tight." How revolting! Go back and look at the pictures of Coe when he was arrested on 8-10-09 in his black t-shirt, " It is all fun and games until the cops show up". Makes me wonder what a man that age would be doing wearing a t-shirt with that saying! Disgusting! Anyway, take a look at the Lucas Coe of 2009. Then imagine him with Emma! Makes me want to puke (not vomit, but puke).
"Luke holds me tight" has been in several articles.
You welcome, Julie! As a mother, I imagine you know what a straddle injury looks like. I am sure it disgusts you to have read or seen an interview with one of Coe's attorneys saying Coe did not commit the crime he is accused of; Emma received her vaginal injury from straddling! How disrespectful to Emma!
Hi, Fysty and Caylee's Justice!
During recess, I usually go outside in front of the Justice Center. There are benches there and numerous people go outside to take a break (there are no windows in the Court Room so it is nice to go outside).
I am talking about people that are in the Justice Center for many reasons. The Justice Center is one city block and 20 stories.
I have met many strangers and we chat. They will ask me why I'm at the Justice Center and they'll say why they are there. I state that I am there to observe the Lucas Coe trial regarding the Emma Thompson Case and support the State of Texas who is seeking Justice for Emma Thompson. Every person I have spoken to is familiar with this case. They state that the mother's trial was not too long ago and they feel that sorry, poor excuse of a mother (some call her things I can't type on this comment board), should have received Life in Prison without parole and many said she (Abigail Young) deserves the Death Penalty. All have stated Coe should be tried for the murder of Emma and get the needle or the death penalty.
Hi, Serenity! Thank you for the Link you posted up-thread.
Yes, it has been difficult and clearly emotional for the ER RN's that have testified. Their professionalism and dedication to the Nursing Oath is apparent. So is their compassion. Both of the RN's that testified said Emma was in Full Arrest when she was brought into the ER. The first nurse to evaluate Emma said she was cold and the blood was at the lower extremities already. As an RN, I know you know what she is talking about. Maybe you can explain what that means if anyone asks on this comment board. The RN explained it but I did not take notes because I was listening carefully so I could understand about Emma's status at that particular time.
Per the RN, because Emma was so very young, they worked on her in life saving efforts hoping they could (don't recall the medical term the RN used) bring her back. They worked on Emma until she was officially pronounced dead. The RN said it was their professional medical obligation to do so even though Emma was "gone" (she used medical terminology).
When the Prosecutors asked one of the RN's what she first noticed as she approached ER 11, the RN said from a distance the first thing she noticed about Emma was her red hair. As she got closer and could see Emma, she noticed the bruises, busted lips, blood, etc. She said when a patient is brought in and if they are in Full Arrest, the first thing ER personnel do is life saving efforts. At that point, they are not immediately concerned with other injuries.
In my layman's terms . . . .you have to get the person to breathe first and then be concerned with other injuries.
I agree with you regarding the testimony of Young's 12 year old daughter who was 11 at the time. Laura is her name as been reported by the media during Young's trial. Laura testified for the Defense (her mother) at Young's trial.
Yesterday someone said she would be testifying for the Defense in Coe's trial. That did not make sense to me. As it turns out, Laura testified via video for the Prosecution with cross examination by the Defense. The tape was played today. It was about one hour long.
Hi, Want To Know and welcome to Reality Chatter! Here is an article that will explain why the State of Texas (Harris County Prosecutors) are not seeking murder and the death penalty for Coe. Personally, I think Coe should have been charged with murder and deserves the death penalty but I do understand why the decision was to go for the Super Aggravated Sexual Assualt Charge.
This article was in our local paper, the Brenham Banner Press - Brenham, Tx dated 9-15-10:
Prosecutor says Coe raped 4-year-old
Published: by the Brenham Banner Press - Brenham, Tx
Wednesday, September 15, 2010 1:31 PM CDT
HOUSTON — Prosecutors here painted a brutal picture of Lucas Coe, accused of sexually assaulting 4-year-old Emma Thompson at the start of Coe’s trial Tuesday.
Coe’s trial on a super-aggravated sexual assault charge began with Assistant Harris County District Attorney Tina Ansari bluntly telling jurors that Coe raped the child shortly before her death in June 2009.
“The defendant shoved an object or his male sexual organ into that poor child and ripped her apart,” Ansari told jurors during her opening statements.
Prosecutors decided to try Coe on a super-aggravated sexual assault of a child because if convicted, he would not be eligible for parole. Prosecutors have said it is a stricter punishment for a crime that is easier to prove than trying to convict him for the girl’s death.
Ansari also told jurors that evidence would show that Emma had a “giant tear of her vagina, not a baby tear, but a giant tear.”
I have a few things I need to do. It is very hectic when I come home after being gone all day. Besides family obligations, I have numerous phone calls I have to return as well as e-mails. So . . . I can not come and comment immediately when I get home.
I will be back shortly and will comment about today's trial proceedings. There is info about the trial in the above comments by me but not necessarily about today.
This article from the Houston Chronicle - Houston, Tx is dated 8-1-09 and I think it is worth reading again. Some may have not read it in 2009.
When Lucas Coe's trial regarding Emma Thompson concludes, he has a case pending in Montgomery County (adjacent to Harris County). Coe is suppose to go to trial in Montgomery County after his trial in Harris County concludes (current trial).
2 more children taken into CPS care
They had contact with the boyfriend of dead girl's mother
By TERRI LANGFORD
HOUSTON CHRONICLE
Aug. 1, 2009, 9:25AM
Harris County Sheriff's Office
Lucas Ruric Coe's criminal history includes assault with a deadly weapon and injury to a child.
Two more children who had contact with Lucas Ruric Coe were taken into protective custody Friday after Texas Child Protective Services confirmed one, a 4-year-old girl, had been sexually abused.
Coe is the boyfriend of a woman whose 4-year-old daughter Emma Thompson died in June after being beaten and sexually assaulted.
The 27-year-old Coe has been investigated by CPS three times in recent years in the physical abuse of another girlfriend's child. As a result of one of those cases — unrelated to Emma's death — Coe has been indicted in Montgomery County on one count of injury to a child. He has not yet gone to trial.
CPS spokeswoman Gwen Carter would not say whether Coe was the focus of their latest investigation. She would only say that it began shortly after Emma died on June 27. Emma's skull was fractured, and there was evidence she had been sexually abused.
“A new report was generated as a result of a child death investigation involving Mr. Coe with Harris County Protective Services.” Carter said. “We needed to take custody.”
Coe had been dating Emma's mother, Abigail Elizbeth Young, since December. No arrests have been made in Emma's death, but Harris County investigators have said that no one, including Coe and Young, have been excluded as suspects.
As Young, a 33-year-old registered nurse, was taking Emma to Memorial Hermann-The Woodlands Hospital hospital on June 27, Coe, who was at her house, rushed Emma's two sisters and his own child to a neighbor next door. He reportedly told the neighbor that Emma had become sick and asked her to watch the other three children for the night.
Meanwhile, as Young was taking her daughter to the hospital, Emma became unconscious and stopped breathing. Young called 911 from the road. By the time Emma reached the hospital, she was dead.
Young testified this week in a hearing to determine temporary custody of her other children, that she had nothing to do with Emma's death and did not see anyone harm her daughter.
Oh that poor little child. What evil she had to endure at the hands of a slimy child-molester, who should have been behind bars instead of free to beat and rape tiny children. This helpless innocent child's momster is a sick perverted POS, and just as guilty as Coe in bringing about Emma's death. May they rot in hell for alll eternity.
Re: Emma Thompson -- Deceased 6/27/09 (Thread #1)
Post by Ann - Tx on Fri Sep 17, 2010 2:59 am
Jennifer, one of Abigail Young's nearby neighbors was the first to take the stand on Thursday, 9-16-10. She testified on 9-15-10 also.
The Prosecution established that Abigail Young made the call to 911 (EMS) at 8:54 p.m. on 6-27-10. The call lasted 18 minutes. This was per Young's telephone records.
In cross examination by the Defense, there was something controversial about the phone call records versus Jennifer's testimony and what was said in her Police Report.
Jennifer did state Lucas Coe appeared nervous when she saw him at Christy's home during the time Young was down the road with Emma and EMS.
After a side bar with the attorneys, the Judge called a ten minute recess. When the proceedings resumed, the Judge said Jennifer would be called back to the stand later. Because the attorneys (I think the Defense) needed to retrieve certain info, the Judge said the video taped testimony of Laura would be played.
He ordered a closed court and said once the tape starts no one would be allowed to leave, stand or move around. All were asked to be as quiet as possible. He said the tape was about one hour. So, if anyone wanted to leave, please do so now. No one left. The tape was started.
At the head of the table, was Judge Shaver. To his right was Laura. To Laura's right was Tina Ansari and across from her and to the left of Judge Shaver was Coe's two attorneys.
Judge Shaver swore Laura in.
Tina Ansari, Prosecutor for the State of Texas, questioned Laura first. Tina did an exceptional job. She established a rapport with Laura and then started her questioning. It appeared Laura was very comfortable with Tina asking questions. In my opinion, she showed no signs of being upset or stressed.
After Tina concluded her questioning, she passed the witness to the Defense. They started their questioning. To me, it appeared Laura was not as comfortable with the Defense questioning her. She did not appear to be stressed. She just did not have the rapport with the defense attorney like she did with Tina.
Laura did an outstanding job of answering the questions.
In my opinion, all of the attorneys handled the questioning of Laura well. Questioning a 12 year old who was 11 at the time of Emma's death, is quite different than questioning an adult.
Either Sat. or Sun., I will hi-lite some of her testimony. Her testimony was consistent with her testimony at Young's trial. There are articles from Young's trial that hi-lited some of Laura' testimony.
One thing Laura did testify to was that she was in the swimming pool. Her mother went shopping and because Emma was not feeling well all day, she did not go swimming and was in the house with Coe. She was suppose to be taking a nap in the Master Bedroom. At one point, Laura went inside to use the bath room and she was going to check on Emma who was in the Master Bedroom. The door was closed. When she turned the handle, it would not open because it was locked. She did not see Lucas Coe in the area of the home she was in.
She then went back outside to swim.
After lunch and after Jennifer's afternoon testimony, the following four witnesses were brought into the Court Room and sworn in:
Shawn Walker ( spelling it the way it is pronounced;could be spelled Sean)
Christy Frazier; Susan (the neighbor that lives directly across the street from what was the Abigail Young home); and Amanda Matthew or maybe it is Matthews.
Shawn Walker was the first to testify. The other three had to leave the court room and was ordered by the Judge to not discuss the case.
Shawn Walker is Lucas Coe's brother-in-law. He is married to Lucas Coe's sister, Mickey Walker, who testified yesterday.
Shawn and the aforementioned witnesses testified for the Prosecution. To me, Walker came across as very credible and his testimony was excellent!
I will detail his testimony over the week-end. He did testify that Abigail and Emma came to pick up Lucas Coe from his home around 1 p.m. on Friday, 6-26-09. Emma looked fine. Walked fine, etc.
Next to testify was Susan, a Registered Nurse who lived directly across from Abigail Young. She works at Memorial Hermann Hospital - The Woodlands. She has been a RN for 40 years. She works the 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift. She wakes up around 1 p.m. Susan is an attractive lady who looks young. If she has been a RN for 40 years, my assumption is she is in her 60's. When the witness was passed to the Defense, the attorney questioning her made a comment that she must have been a RN since she was a baby or something to that effect. The way he said it was a compliment and how he said it made everyone laugh including Judge Shaver. I noticed Coe even laughed who has been expressionless most of the time. Yesterday at one point, he and his sister, Mickey (during her testimony) exchanged smiles. He also exchanged smiles with Christy (see below).
On Sat, 6-27-10, Susan was sitting in her garage and she said she saw Abigail Young pull into her (Young's) driveway. She saw Young get out and carry 2 or 3 bags of what appeared to be groceries and go into her home. This could have been between 2 and 3 p.m.
She did not speak to Young. She stated earlier that she did not socialize with Young. They were not friends.
Susan testified that in the 3 months prior to Emma's death, on occasion, there was a black truck parked in Young's driveway but was rarely moved. In previous testimony from another witness it was established by the Prosecution that Coe had a black truck but did not drive it often and quit driving it. The why was not disclosed.
Christy Frazier testified next. She was on the stand for quite some time. On occasion, her testimony was emotional. Will detail her testimony over the week-end. She, Coe and Emma Coe (Coe's 4 year old daughter) left. She said they were going to go to where Abby, Emma and EMS were but once they started in that direction, Coe asked her to take him and Emma to the Jack in the Box and she did. After letting them off, she said she went to the place where EMS were but when she got there, everybody was gone and she went home.
Christy did state that she has known Coe since she was 12 years old. That she lived down the street from the Coe family when she was a child. She and Mickey (Lucas Coe's sister) were friends since then and still are friends. Will comment further on this - hopefully on Sat.
Amanda Matthew(s?) is Abigail Young's sister and Emma Thompson's aunt. She testified next.
Will have to detail this Sat. But . . . will say this for now: Amanda testified that Lucas Coe called heron 6-27-09 and told her that Emma is at the hospital and it does not look good. He told Amanda to come and get her nieces. At the time, Amanda was living in Webster, Tx which is just south of Houston. It would have taken about 45 minutes or longer for Amanda to drive to Spring, Tx (Young's home).
Amanda said she called her mom and Ben Thompson and one other person who was a close family friend and told them about the call from Lucas. Amanda, her husband and daughter were headed to Young's but decided to go to the hospital to be with Abby. In a conversation with Coe, she told Coe to take her nieces to Christy's (Young's next door neighbor). That was the last time she talked to Coe and never had any further conversations with him since the night of 6-27-09.
It was about 5 p.m. and Judge Shaver adjourned the court for the day and told the jury he would see them tomorrow morning.
Ben Thompson is suppose to testify Friday, 9-17-10.
Once again, I am sorry I do not have time to provide more info. It is almost 2 a.m. and I need to get up at 5 a.m. - - - - have not even gone to sleep yet!
Hi, Cali. I think you and I would use to blog about Emma's case on another site about a year ago. Good to "see" you!
Your above statement sounds like what strangers were telling me during my breaks outside in front of the Justice Center where Coe's trial is being held. I mentioned it in a comment up-thread.
An assumption
Post by Serenity on Fri Sep 17, 2010 12:02 pm
This is clearly an assumption. I am not sure of the facts, but I assume this may be what the RN's may have been discussing. Baby Emma passed away from blunt trauma. Blunt trauma and penetrating trauma may cause lacerations of internal organs, which may account for a significant amount of acute blood loss resulting in a decreased cardiac output. Livor Mortis, is a settling of the blood in the lower (dependent) portion of the body. It occurs once the heart stops beating and can become evident 20- 30 minutes following death. Heavy red blood cells settle downward by gravity causing a maroon color of the skin. The body then begins to cool as body temperature decreases (Algor Mortis). With all patients CPR and first aid measures are taken very seriously in the ER!!! When a child arrives, they are treated as if they are your own. It's mother nature.
Hi, WantToKnow! You welcome.
It is mentally exhausting because of the brutality of the crime against Emma Thompson that Lucas Coe is accused of. Hearing all of the details via sworn testimony, the gruesome pictures taken at the Emergency Room and the autopsy pictures of precious 4-year-old Emma is shocking . . . . .It is heart breaking to see the pictures and then glance at Lucas Coe and I wonder how could an adult man do that to a small, innocent and defenseless child. Poor, poor Emma . . . .my heart breaks for her and the pain and suffering she endured at the hands of an obviously evil man! It angers me to see the vaginal pictures and what was done to Emma! The internal injuries that caused her abdomen to be very swollen. Her skull fracture and all of the bruises, busted lips, etc.
If Abigail Young, Registered Nurse, had been a decent mother, protected Emma, did not lie to CPS, Emma's peditrician, her husband, Ben Thompson, and others but most importantly let a person like Lucas Coe in her home or even around her children, sweet, little Emma would be alive today.
Today we saw the video tape of Young at Randall's buying groceries. We saw the tape of her unloading groceries onto the conveyor even sacking her groceries, leaving the store and wheeling the basket in the parking lot to her vehicle. The Randall's tape started at 7 p.m on 6-27-09, the night Emma died. The itemized list of Abigail Young's groceries was also shown - - - she bought some Krazy Glue. In the pictures from the crime scene (her home), there is the opened packaging from the Krazy Glue on the floor!
The Registered Nurses from the ER at Memorial Hermann - The Woodlands Hospital testified they do NOT use Super Glue to glue a fractured skull together. They testified super glue would never be used to attempt to bond the skull back together. There is a bonding agent that could be used by medical personnel in the ER. Don't recall the term for it. The RN's testified about it and stated the name of it. Maybe Serenity could tell us the name of it. It is called something . . .Bond? Help, Serenity!
The point is Young, Registered Nurse, is at Randall's shopping for groceries . . . and she did buy a lot of groceries! Emma was at home with Coe when Young should have called 911 hours ago. This is just very hard to think Young is shopping for groceries and Emma had already sustained horrific injuries.
If Emma had been my child, I would have called 911 immediately for medical help and told them to send Law Enforcement also because my boyfriend sexually assaulted my 4 year old daughter. But Young, Registered Nurse, goes grocery shopping and does not seek medical attention for Emma. The Emergency Room RN's testified that because of the head fracture, Emma's hair should have been saturated with blood but it was not and Emma's hair was wet. In my opinion, based on the photos, taken by the Crime Scene Investigator, at the ER, it is apparent that Young and/or Coe washed Emma's hair and cleaned Emma up before attempting to seek medical help.
When Young, Registered Nurse, finally decides to seek medical help for Emma, it is too late. She carries Emma to her vehicle and goes down the road to call 911. No doubt in my mind . . . it is to give Lucas Coe and his 4 year old daughter, Emma, the opportunity to get away from the area. How does a mother, who is a Registered Nurse, do that? Like the Prosecution stated at Young's trial, Lucas Coe was more important to Young than her own 4-year old daughter, Emma! That is what is so unbelievable!
I will say this . . . . our legislators in the State of Texas need to change our laws that if a person is convicted of sexually assaulting a child, the punishment is the Death Penalty. No ands, ifs or buts about it! Anyone that does to a child, what was done to Emma Thompson, deserves the Death Penalty.
The effort to have the laws changed and be more stringent will be my next project. Maybe it should be called Emma's Law. After the trial, I will start contacting some of our Legislators in Texas regarding Emma Thompson's case. That is a promise! When Coe's trial ends, it is not and will not be over until one day laws in Texas are changed to be more stringent, preferably the Death Penalty. There needs to be laws against mothers who protect boyfriends when their child dies as a result of injuries sustained at the hands of the boyfriend. Death Penalty for the mothers who failed to protect their child, lied and covered for a boyfriend sounds real good to me! I think every legislator in the State of Texas needs to read the transcript from the trials of Abigail Young and Lucas Coe. They need to look at the pictures of Emma that were taken at the ER, the Autopsy pictures of Emma and the crime scene photos and then imagine that is their daughter or granddaughter. I bet we would see a major change in Texas law regarding sexual assault of a child and child abuse!
Wow! Piper and Julie . . . . thank you!
Yes, Justice for Emma is not far away . . . . the Judge told the Jury, before dismissing them for the day on Friday, that Closing Arguments will probably take place next Tuesday and then they will be given the case for deliberations.
Just think maybe by Wednesday, there will hopefully be a guilty verdict for Lucas Coe! Depending what time of the day the Jury gets the case, the verdict could come in on Tuesday! And . . . I will be there. Sitting around and waiting patiently regardless of how many hours it takes to hear the verdict!
LCoastMom, a big, huge welcome to Reality Chatter! You are brilliant. You saw my message to you in the Banner Press! I am so glad you figured it out! I posted as Concerned Citizen.
As this case unfolded, I posted on KBTX (CBS) - Bryan, Tx as Justice and I know you posted there also.
Thank you so very much for joining Reality Chatter. This is an awesome site. The owner of this site, Fysty Angel, approved this thread for Emma. Snaz and Justice4All, the Reality Chatter Administrators, posted the majority of the pictures and videos, especially Snaz. In fact, Snaz made Emma's thread come alive!
Since I've been at the trial, Piper, Julie and Justice4All have done the updates. I noticed Piper also posted some videos and pictures. Snaz has not been available this week or she would have been updating also.
It is so awesome and wonderful to know that Reality Chatter supports "Justice for Emma Thompson!"
Besides Emma Thompson's case, Reality Chatter supports many other cases of missing, murdered or abused children and missing adults.
LCoast, hope you enjoy being a part of this awesome group at Reality Chatter. You are free to express your opinion without mean, nasty hateful attacks like some sites. The folks on Reality Chatter are nice and compassionate about the missing and murdered children. We all agree to disagree and it works well.
Once again, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the post by you! So glad you found Reality Chatter!
Ann - Tx: Your dedication for Emma brings tears to my eyes, and hope to my heart, for justice for Emma. This case has been a slow discovery of the evil actions of a mother and her predatory boyfriend. The mother should be known hereafter as the "monstermomma". She knowingly allowed Coe to be alone with Emma, saw the medical reports of STDs, knew how Emma had gotten infected. Abigail Young failed to save Emma right then, and that should be evidence that convicts her of causing Emma's death. By allowing Coe to be with Emma after that, she, by her actions, allowed Coe to sexually assault Emma. Emma died because her mother lied, her mother lied and failed to protect her.
I would love to see a nationwide explicit "Emma's Law" where automatic criminal charges and prosecution pursued of any parent knowingly allowing their child to be in the presence of a known child abuser. This law should further state that parents are responsible for the protection of their children and are to take responsible precautions when allowing any stranger free access to their home.
How sad that parental neglect forces such common sense measures to be put into law. But, who will protect the children, if not the parent.
I know that my legal terminology is lacking and I also have no idea how difficult it would be to get such a law enacted. Sad, too, is how the law protects the criminal more that the victim. Protects the criminal from harm when he/she is locked up, too.
In the pictures from the crime scene (her home), there is the opened packaging from the Krazy Glue on the floor!
It is called Dermabond, a liquid bonding agent that holds many cuts, wounds, and incisions together as effectively as stitches do. It is needle free.
Thank you, Serenity! That is what the RN's called it in their testimony. It is difficult to take notes, writing 150 mph, listen to the testimony and observe expressions and what is going on in the Court Room!
Cali, what a beautiful and honest comment! I intend to start at the State level but might pursue the state and federal level simultaneously. I am fairly certain that is the route I will pursue. I will develop my plan of action when Lucas Coe's trial concludes. And . . . I will pursue this!
Until the laws are more stringent, I will pursue this to the day I die. I have been a child's advocate for many, many years as well as animal abuse and elderly abuse. I have found legislators are very receptive. On behalf of Emma Thompson, I will never, ever go away . . . not until changes are made in our laws! That is the bottom line as far as I am concerned. Changes in our laws will not happen over night but it has to happen or else we'll just see more horrific, brutal cases like Emma Thompson. It was difficult to look at all of the horrific, gruesome pictures of Emma but those pictures are in my mind forever and they will be the driving force for me to ramp up my efforts to pursue changes in our law.
Cali, thank you so much for your dedication to Emma Thompson's case. I do remember asking you when I first came to RC if you are the Cali from another site (a long time ago) and I think you told me your nic was Caligram on that site. I think when I asked you again a day or two ago, I was too exhausted to remember the aforementioned. On the way to Houston today, it clicked and I remembered!
I will do an update on the trial later today or on Sunday. Hopefully, later today.
Briefly, because a witness for the Defense was not going to be available next week when the Defense puts on the defense of their client and the Defendant, Lucas Coe, Judge Shaver allowed the Defense to question the witness on Friday, 6-17-10.
The Defense called a doctor from Minnesota as an expert witness. He does Pediatric research of infectious diseases. He has published papers on Herpes Simplex Virus. After the Defense passed the witness to the State (Prosecutors), Tina Ansari did an awesome job of questioning him. She discredited him quickly. Bottom line: He went through a divorce in 2008 (I think it was 2008 ). He illegally obtained his wife's medical records and viewed them! That took care of credibility! Also, Tina questioned some of the things he testified to. Just did not go too well for the doctor when the Prosecution questioned him!
I was not impressed with the majority of his testimony. We all know expert witnesses are paid for their testimony. In my opinion, the Defense wasted their client's money by flying this guy in to testify as an expert witness.
I won't give any details for now but I will later today. The following were called as witnesses for the State of Texas:
. An officer from Houston Police Department - Major Offenders Division (Testified re Cell Phone pings of Abigail Young and Lucas Coe's cell phone records.)
. Dr. Patricia Moore - Southeast Forensics Center in Conroe, Tx
She did the autopsy of Emma Thompson on 6-29-10.
. Benjamin (Ben) Thompson - Emma's father.
NOTE: Before the Judge adjourned court for the day and excused the Jury until Monday morning, he told the Jury that testimony will continue Monday and Tuesday and probably on Tuesday, 6-21-10, both sides will do their Closing Arguments. The Jury will then be given the case for deliberations.
If the trial proceeds as anticipated by the Judge, we will know Coe's fate one day next week.
If Coe is found guilty, the Punishment Phase will be next. If he is found guilty earlier in the day, the Judge will ask the State if they are ready to proceed with the Punishment Phase. If they say yes, the Punishment Phase will start.
If it is later in the day, the Punishment Phase will start the next morning. The jury will deliberate and give the Punishment which the judge will read and order!
Good night! Will be on later today!
