Accused NW Indiana shooter to be freed, alibi checks out

Submitted by Bryan Alaspa on 2010-10-13

Brian Dorian, the former Lynwood police officer who had been arrested as the “Honey Bee Killer” is expected to go free according to lawyers and the Will County Prosecutor’s office. The report, on the same day Dorian appeared for the first time in court, means that the man accused of shooting three people, killing one, is still on the loose. According to Dorian’s attorney, police were able to verify his alibi.

Dorian’s attorney, Bob Odekirk, spoke with a local newspaper about the recent developments. He stated that the police were able to determine that Dorian was using his computer at 11 a.m. the day of the shooting, as he had told police. This means he would have been at home and online instead of where the shootings took place.

Press conference coming

Botched, Stalled Cases Hurting Will County's Credibility?

By Alex Perez

The release of a Lynwood police officer, who had been accused of killing one man and injuring two others in a two-state shooting spree, is another blow to a law enforcement agency that's suffered a number setbacks in high-profile cases.

The Will County State's attorney on Wednesday formally dropped charges against Brian Dorian, who they'd accused of being the so-called Honey Bee Killer.

Other botched or stalled cases include the recent dismissal of felony weapons charges against Drew Peterson, who is awaiting trial on charges he killed his third wife, Kathleen Savio. Her March 2004 death was initially ruled accidental but was later determined to be a homicide. Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, went missing in October 2007.

Brian Dorian's release from jail Wednesday afternoon left the residents of Lowell, Ind., (population 8500) with frayed nerves.

His release means a potentially unstable killer is still on the loose. Before his arrest locals were reportedly locking their doors and loading their guns because of they feared the strange "Honey Bee Killer" was lurking.

"But you can't live your life in fear, just because something like this happened," said Jackie Hansen of nearby Crown Point.

Some residents said they weren't surprised by the dramatic turn of events, pointing out differences in the police sketch provided during the manhunt and Dorian's subsequent mug shot.

By Pete Nickeas pete.nickeas@nwi.com, (219) 933-4183 nwi.com | Posted: Monday, December 13, 2010 12:00 am

CROWN POINT | Lake County Sheriff Rogelio "Roy" Dominguez said his department is working with police in Illinois to determine if a suspect shot dead in an attempted robbery is connected to Oct. 5 shootings that killed one man and injured two others in Beecher and Lowell.

A man was killed trying to rob an LA Tan salon in Orland Park on Saturday evening, according to a release from the village Police Department.

"Our detectives and the detectives in the Will County sheriff's office and Orland Park investigative units have been in contact to investigate the shooting that occurred in Orland, to see if there's a connection between that and (the shootings) in Beecher and here in Lowell," Dominguez said.

He would not elaborate on why the bistate shooting investigators were looking into the Orland Park incident

L.A. Tan, "Honeybee" Weapons Match: Reports

NBCChicago.com
updated 2 hours 23 minutes ago 2010-12-14T03:16:00

The gun used in this weekend's botched robbery attempt at a suburban tanning salon is the same one that was used in a two-state shooting spree two months ago, according to published reports.

Both the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune, citing sources, report that ballistics testing on the handgun carried into an Orland Park L.A. Tan by Gary Amaya on Saturday tie it to tests done on bullet casings recovered from the Oct. 5. shootings in Beecher, Ill., and Lowell, Ind.

Tanning salon gun matches gun in ‘honeybee’ spree, source says

BY DAN ROZEK AND KIM JANSSEN Staff Reporters Dec 13, 2010 09:22PM

The pistol used in a weekend robbery at an Orland Park tanning parlor is the same weapon that killed a man and wounded two others during a two-state shooting spree last October, a law enforcement source said Monday.

Ballistic tests show the handgun Gary Amaya carried during the Saturday holdup at L.A. Tan also was used in an Oct. 5 shooting in rural Will County and another that occurred later the same day near Lowell, Ind., the source disclosed.
