Canada will bring Khadr home

OTTAWA — Canadian terrorist Omar Khadr is coming home, Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon confirmed Monday.

Last week, Toronto-born Khadr, 24, pleaded guilty to several terrorism-related charges, including murder, at his Guantanamo Bay U.S. Naval Station war crimes trial. In exchange for the guilty plea, the U.S. government agreed to a sentence of eight years in prison, at least one of which must be served in the U.S.

After that first year, Khadr can apply to be transferred to a Canadian prison. On Monday, Cannon made it clear in the House of Commons that the Conservative government will approve that transfer.

"The U.S. government agreed to have Khadr come back to Canada and we will implement the agreement that was reached between Mr. Khadr and the government of the United States,” Cannon told the House of Commons.

Prior to Monday's announcement, Canada’s official line, as expressed in a diplomatic note sent to the U.S., was that it would "look favourably” on a request from Khadr to get out of Guantanamo Bay and come back to Canada.

please don't hold eva responsible for Canada. (Or Martine for that matter.)
