Morenci left praying for missing boys as father is jailed

By GINA DAMRON and ERIC D. LAWRENCE

Posted: Dec. 2, 2010

Andrew Skelton always was a "Star Wars" fan. Middle brother Alexander Skelton always walked little brother Tanner Skelton to class at Morenci Elementary each school day.

Once there, Alexander helped Tanner get his coat and backpack off and gave him a hug before he went to his own class.

On Wednesday, the principal and Tanner's teacher described the brothers -- ages 9, 7 and 5 -- as caring, sweet boys. The three have been missing since late last week, and Morenci police have said they now anticipate the worst.

Friends in Tanner's developmental kindergarten class made drawings for him. The teacher filled in text below, pairing pictures of scribbly stick figures, big-eared circle people and kids holding hands with messages like: "I miss Tanner. I pray for him."

An Ohio judge ordered their father, John Skelton, 39, jailed Wednesday in lieu of $3-million bail on three counts of parental kidnapping pending a formal extradition hearing Dec. 14 in Toledo. Skelton's court-appointed attorney declined on his client's behalf to waive Skelton's extradition rights.

Later Wednesday morning, Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks announced that if the brothers aren't found by the end of the day Friday, volunteers should stop searching for the weekend so officials can re-evaluate their direction next week. Also Wednesday, an anonymous donor offered a $10,000 reward for the return or recovery of the boys.

Community members and school officials remain hopeful.

"I have to have hope," said Janet Rollins, Tanner's teacher. "I still pray every day that they find them and that they're OK."

Searchers cling to hope of finding Morenci boys; $10,000 reward offered
Boys' father fights extradition as Lucas County judge sets $3M bond

An anonymous donor Wednesday offered a $10,000 reward for the return of the boys or the recovery of their bodies.

Unlike in past days when searchers were deployed to specific areas, people now were told to sweep across an expansive swath of land with specific sites. They spent hours looking in ditches, under bridges, and scanning farm fields. The search area covered roadsides in Williams and Fulton counties spanning 16 miles from east to west and about five miles north to south.

Chief Weeks ordered the volunteer searches to end at sunset Friday.

"I'd like the opportunity to process what we've collected through the weekend, what's been searched, what hasn't been searched, re-evaluate our direction for the following week," he said.

He called for property owners to search their own lands.

Morenci police update investigation, search continues for missing boys

WXYZ - Detroit, MI

Last Updated: 1 hour and 48 minutes ago

MORENCI, Mich. (WXYZ) - In an emotional news conference Thursday morning, Morenci Police updated the investigation into the disappearance of three young brothers.

It began with a representative reading an emotional statement from the family of the children. The family thanked all of the volunteers and law enforcement agencies. They requested privacy at this time.

Police Chief Larry Weeks also thanked volunteers for their efforts in the search for Andrew, Alexander and Tanner.

"We genuinely and sincerely appreciate all of the efforts from all over the United States..." said Police Chief Weeks. He told reporters that John Skelton, the father of the boys, has asked for a lawyer and that they have not had contact with him in several days.

During the news conference, Police Chief Weeks recalled a time when he personally met the young boys. He says one thing that sticks in his mind is when 9-year-old Andrew Skelton came up to him in a toy police hat and vest and said "I'm going to be a police officer like you one day."

Four dive teams search for Morenci boys in Williams County; hundreds of volunteers head out on foot

Article published December 02, 2010

Toledo, OH
BLADE STAFF

PIONEER, Ohio — Divers were using sonar equipment Thursday afternoon at multiple bodies of water across Williams County to search for three missing brothers.

Scuba teams from Toledo, Angola, Ind., as well as from Lenawee and Williams counties, hoped to search in at least seven major bodies of water throughout the day, including possible searches at Nettle Lake and Mud Lake in the northwestern corner of the county.

Dennis Wisniewski, the head of the scuba team from Williams County, described the efforts as a "shot in the dark," saying investigators don't have direct information the Skelton brothers would be found in the area.

But he also said investigators believe their father John Skelton's cell phone was used in the area last week. In addition, several witnesses have come forward saying they saw Mr. Skelton's van exit from the nearby Ohio Turnpike.

Hi, Looking for Justice!

You are welcome.

There is so much going on with the Zahara Baker case and now the Skelton boys . . . Alexander, Andrew and Tanner.

On Reality Chatter (RC), they have posted some pictures of the boys.

One is of them playing in the snow and the other is in front of a Christmas tree. They enlarged the pics. The boys are just precious!

Here is the Link to the Skelton thread at RC.

This is the Link to Page 6 of the Skelton thread on RC. The Christmas pic is on this page. Just scroll down.

Also, on this page is an enlarged pic of John Skelton in the Court Room yesterday. The deputies surrounding him look like they are disgusted at the sight of him. Just my opinion!

By Nina Mandell

Thursday, December 2nd 2010, 2:09 PM

A tearful mayor addressed volunteers looking for three missing boys in Morenci, Mich., on Thursday after officials announced volunteer searches for three missing Michigan boys will be called off on Friday.

Five-year-old Tanner, 7-year-old Alexander and 9-year-old Andrew Skelton were last seen on Thanksgiving.

Their disappearance has frustrated the small town of Morenci and police who have been continuously thrown off the trail by the boys' father, John Skelton.

It was my understanding that the search was going to be called off Friday for a weekend regrouping. The LE wants to use the short time of not searching to reassess their leads and information so far. I sure hope they aren't going to stop searching!

Crews scour Ohio lake for 3 missing boys despite low hopes, temps

KUNKLE, Ohio – Crews continued to search areas in and around Williams County, Ohio, today for the three missing Skelton boys.

With temperatures hovering around freezing, a search boat from Toledo scoured Harrison Lake, a 110-acre body of water near Fayette.

“We’re using a side scan sonar to capture a visual image of the bottom,” said Toledo Fire Department Lt. Mike Maraldo.

The sonar provides a solid image of the lake’s interior, allowing divers to select where they might dive if something suspicious is spotted.

Volunteers wrap up search for missing Morenci boys
Doug Guthrie / The Detroit News

Last Updated: December 03. 2010 2:47PM

Morenci— The weeklong search for three missing boys near this Michigan/Ohio border town is winding down. An estimated 200 volunteers continued to examine roadsides, farm fields, streams and ponds today for hints on the whereabouts of 9-year-old Andrew, 7-year-old Alexander and 5-year-old Tanner Skelton. The boys were allegedly taken by their father last week during his visitation in the midst of a bitter divorce and custody fight.

John Russell Skelton, 39, is jailed in Toledo on Michigan charges alleging he kidnapped his children. Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks has warned that he fears the search for the boys will "not have a positive outcome."

Tanya Skelton said Thursday through a spokeswoman that she didn't object to the end of the massive search. She said she was thankful for all the volunteers, which included people from as far away as Texas, spokeswoman Kathye Herrera said.

"We know how hard everyone has been working wanting to bring home our precious little boys, and we thank you," Herrera said in a statement.

No Search Planned for Michigan Boys Over Weekend

Fire official: No organized search for 3 missing Michigan boys is scheduled for weekend

The Associated Press

MORENCI, Mich.

Hundreds of searchers combed the southern Michigan and northern Ohio countryside again Friday for three young brothers last seen at their father's home on Thanksgiving. With the search ending unsuccessfully, authorities prepared to use the weekend to determine what else should be done to find the boys.

Morenci police had said Friday's search would be the last organized one of the week using volunteers, and fire official Bob Mohr said Friday evening that no search was planned for Saturday or Sunday.

Hi, Piper!

Thanks for posting the above picture. The pale blue background is the perfect color for that picture!

It is so commendable of all of the dedicated volunteers to be out searching for Alexander, Andrew and Tanner.

How can their dad sit his butt in a nice warm jail while his three sons are laying somewhere in the freezing temps. One of the articles indicated John Skelton told the FBI he killed his sons. That piece of garbage needs to tell LE where he tossed his sons!

Crying or Very sad My prayers and thoughts are that Alexander, Andrew, and Tanner be found soon!

LE should parade the POS dad back and forth along the cell blocks. Let him get a preview of what he can expect if he were placed among them. Now I know that won't happen, but he doesn't deserve to be protected. He did not protect his sons. Instead, he coldly and calculatingly murdered them. Revenge is an emotion that promotes evil. I think he may be willing to trade the truth on where his disposed of them in exchange for taking the DP off the table. His sorry ass should be the trophy and he should join his peers. He is playing with LE, thinking he is a smart ass with all the answers. How long would it take for him to scream "lets make a deal".

If he killed the boys in Ohio, they could take the death penalty off the table in exchange for revealing the location of the bodies, but if the boys were killed in Michigan, authorities don't have that option since Michigan doesn't have the death penalty.

No answers after visit to missing Morenci boys' dad in jail
Hearts heavy as volunteers end search

Two members of the clergy and a family member of John Skelton were given special visitation this week with the father of the three missing boys from Morenci in hopes that he would reveal his sons' whereabouts, an Ohio jail administrator said.

The visitation at the Lucas County Corrections Center in Toledo was face-to-face -- instead of the normal half-hour, weekly video visitation -- and is used only on rare occasions, Corrections Administrator Jim O'Neal said.

The special visitors were requested by authorities in an effort to talk to Skelton about the whereabouts of his sons, Andrew, 9, Alexander, 7, and Tanner, 5, who have been missing since last week.
Skelton, 39, of Morenci is jailed on parental kidnapping charges and faces a Dec. 14 hearing that seeks to extradite him to Michigan. He has declined all requests for interviews, O'Neal said.

"Reminder of 2003

The search, particularly at sites near the Ohio Turnpike, was a painful reminder for some in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan of a similar search for two children in 2003.
Manuel Gehring of New Hampshire told police that he shot his children, Philip and Sarah Gehring, ages 11 and 14, and drove with their bodies in his van.
He stopped off I-80 in Pennsylvania to buy a shovel, and later got off the interstate again and buried them in shallow graves. He gave clues on their whereabouts that led to searches along I-80, between Grove City, Pa., and Iowa City, Iowa, according to the FBI. I-80 is the turnpike in Ohio.
The children were found Dec. 1, 2005, in northeast Ohio by a woman and her dog, according to news reports.
Seven years later, law enforcement is again searching areas near the turnpike looking for the Skelton brothers.

Drawn together

Despite health issues, McCrea also took part in the search for 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan in Monroe County last year. "I found out that the world isn't all bad," he said. "I sat beside some people from Texas. They didn't even know where Monroe, Michigan, was and they were looking for Nevaeh."

I admire all of these searchers that come together from across the nation to help search for the missing.

His family member and clergy couldn't get him to talk, he's not going to tell where they are. What questions did they ask him........

Piper, I agree with you. I don't think John will talk. I think he is too wrapped up in himself. If a family member, assuming he had a close relationship with this person, could not "break" him, I don't think he'll talk.

Who knows though. Maybe he'll break one day this week. Never know about these kind of folks!

It must be unbearable for the mom. I could not imagine having all three of my children gone, and assumed murdered. This is a horrendous nightmare.

I think about Alexander, Andrew and Tanner probably laying somewhere in cold, damp woods in the freezing temps or they could have been sacked up like garbage and put in a dumpster. If so, they would be in a landfill among rotting garbage.

Sick! Sick! Sick!

Candles keep hope for missing Morenci boys alive

Francis X. Donnelly / The Detroit News

Morenci — Five days before he and two brothers disappeared, Andrew Skelton made a vow.

With Christmas lights being put up at his church and a city park, "We're going to light up this town," the 9-year-old told his pastor.

On Sunday night, this small rural town kept a small boy's promise.

Hundreds of residents clutching candles and flashlights gathered for a vigil at Wakefield Park. Homeowners put on front porch lights. Public safety vehicles flashed their emergency lights.

After nine days of darkness, Morenci began to see a little light.

"You hope for the best," said Melissa Miller, whose shivering hand held a candle. "What else can you do?"

Skelton and his brothers — Tanner, 5, and Alexander, 7 — were last seen with their father on Thanksgiving.

John Skelton, 39, an unemployed truck driver, has been charged with three counts of kidnapping. Police say he lied about the children's whereabouts and has stopped talking to police.

Until the boys are found, it's going to be difficult for the community to move past tragedy, said residents.

In Morenci, vigil lights the way home for missing Skelton brothers

Detroit, MI 12- 6-10

The people of Morenci gathered Sunday night and lit up the town with candles, flashlights and Christmas lights, hoping to illuminate the way home for Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton.

"We've been visited by darkness here, and we don't understand it," Pastor Donna Galloway of the Morenci United Methodist Church told the crowd. "But as we light these lights tonight, be assured that the boys see the light."
Missing since Thanksgiving, the boys had been with their father, John Skelton, who has since been charged with parental kidnapping and is being held in the Lucas County jail in Ohio.
Several hundred people converged on Wakefield Park for the vigil in the small southern Michigan town to share their fading hopes and grief over the boys' fate.

Process of bringing John Skelton back to Michigan in motion

ADRIAN, Mich. — State and local officials have begun the process of bringing the father of three missing Morenci boys back to Lenawee County to face the parental kidnapping charges filed against him, but it’s unknown how long the process will take.

John Skelton was arrested Nov. 30 upon his release from a mental health facility, where he had been taken after reportedly attempting suicide, and lodged at the Lucas County Jail in Toledo. He is charged with kidnapping his three sons, Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton, who are still missing.

To extradite a defendant who was arrested in another state, the governor of the state where the charges were filed must make a formal request with the governor of the state where the arrest was made.
“We verified today that the governor’s office has our paperwork,” Lenawee County Prosecuting Attorney Jonathan Poer said Monday afternoon. He said he expects the paperwork will be sent from Lansing to Columbus within the next few days.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm has received a request to extradite the father of three missing Morenci boys back to Michigan to face charges here, her office said today.

Granholm received the request Monday, forwarded it to Attorney General Mike Cox's office and is awaiting word, Granholm spokeswoman Liz Boyd said today.

"We received the paperwork from Lenawee County yesterday," Boyd said, adding she's not sure how long it might take to bring the boys' father, John Skelton, back to Michigan. "We’re conducting an expedited review to make sure everything is in order."

Report: Missing Skelton brothers may have been spotted at Ohio doughnut shop
Published: Tuesday, December 07, 2010, 11:46 AM
Updated: Tuesday, December 07, 2010, 12:37 PM

A Toledo television station is reporting that a doughnut shop employee may have spotted the three missing Skelton brothers in her Sandusky, Ohio shop three days after they were last seen.

Sally Jones tells WTVG-TV Channel 13 that three young boys came into the House of Donuts in Sandusky on the Sunday after Thanksgiving with a middle-aged, medium build woman.

Dec. 6, WTVG: Jones told us, "The two older ones didn't act like they wanted to come through that door when they first came in and they kind of huddled together. The younger one kind of looked up and was looking around. He looked like he wanted everything and she kept saying 'Just pick out your donut, Tanner. Just pick out your donut.' That's the only reason I know his name and when I saw it in the newspaper, I said 'That's too much of a coincidence.'"

Morenci police chief warns against 'false hope' in case of missing boys

Doug Guthrie and Tom Greenwood / The Detroit News

Morenci —Police Chief Larry Weeks warned today against "false hope to the family and our community" from stories like the possible sighting of three missing boys in a Sandusky, Ohio, doughnut shop.

Although Weeks stopped short of dismissing the televised report that the missing the Skelton brothers may have been seen with a woman on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, he asked the media to show restraint.

We have received many similar leads from throughout our region and continue to collect that information and assess the credibility of each one," Weeks said in a statement distributed today by the Detroit FBI office. "I would caution those in the media that to report on each of these leads without them being properly vetted by investigators could potentially give false hope to the family and our community. Please use your voice wisely."

Personally, I think Sandy Jones is coming out for her "15 minutes of fame."

Thank you, Police Chief Larry Weeks and the Detroit FBI office for the warning to media! Excellent!

Some folks will be coming out of the wood work if they have a media source that will feature them. Being that there are 3 small boys missing, I would have contacted the Morenci investigators and not contacted a TV station!

In a previous article I read Jones said the investigators have not contacted her yet. Wow! Did she think she was going to make her TV news debut and the Morenci investigators were suppose to contact her.

My prayers and thoughts are with Morenci Law Enforcement and the Detroit FBI that they can break this case and find Alexander, Andrew and Tanner soon. They need to be brought home to their mom and their family.

John Skelton, where are your sons?

Just my opinion!

MORENCI, Mich. (WUPW) - Morenci police detectives are asking for residents in several communities in Southeast Michigan and Northwest Ohio to search their properties for the missing Skelton boys.

Even though there are no organized volunteer searches planned, police still need help from the public. Some hunters in Lenawee, Hillsdale, Fulton and Williams counties are taking initiative to look for the Andrew, Alexander, and Tanner, ages 5-9.

Ralph Stout, who has been hunting for decades, has been out hunting for sport in the woods the past several days. At the same time, he's also is keeping a critical eye out for anything suspicious.
