Authorities said a body clad in dive gear was found in the waters off Palos Verdes Saturday, just as family and friends of missing diver Rebecca Weiss handed out flyers nearby. Weiss had been missing for a week and was thought to have gone diving in the area where the body was found. Michelle Valles reports from Rancho Palos Verdes for the NBC4 News at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2012.

A body has been found off the Palos Verdes Peninsula coast near the site where missing diver Rebecca Weiss was thought to have disappeared last Saturday.

Authorities said the body appeared to be that of a drowning victim. If the death was accidental, that would potentially calm speculation surrounding the disappearance of Weiss, an experienced free diver from Marina del Rey who frequented the waters off Palos Verdes.

Homicide investigators were on the scene after authorities got a call at 11:37 a.m. from the area near Terranea Resort stating a body had been discovered in the water, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Lt. John Wolak said.

Missing California Diver: Detectives Question Husband

By KEVIN DOLAK (@kdolak) and COLLEEN CURRY

Aug. 16, 2012

The husband of a California woman who is believed to have vanished while diving off the Los Angeles coast is now being questioned by homicide detectives after investigators searched for her body for four days and failed to find it.

Rebecca Weiss, 50, was free diving in a cove near Rancho Palos Verdes on Saturday, her husband, Alan Weiss, told police. Rebecca, an experienced diver, had gone diving alone, they say he told them.

When she didn't return, Alan, 60, said he went to search for her in areas where the two would frequently dive. He told authorities that he found his wife's car in a parking lot and her dive bag on the shore where she presumably entered the water.

The Search Is On For Missing Diver

Airdate : 8/17/2012

The mystery deepens into what happened to Rebecca Weiss, a beautiful diver who disappeared without a trace.

The 50-year-old was reported missing by her husband, Alan Weiss on Saturday. He said she left to go diving alone at cove near a five star resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, and never came home.

Rebecca's dive bag was found at the end of a trail near the beach. Her car was parked nearby but her cell phone was missing. Although it's officially a missing person case, the investigation is now being led by homicide detectives.

Rebecca's brother, Robert Causey, who just happens to be a Sheriff's Deputy, is leading the search for his sister and says he doesn't believe she could have drowned.

Robert said, "She's a strong swimmer, she was wearing a wetsuit. It does not make sense to me why she could fall victim to the ocean."

He's also puzzled as to why her dive bag was not found closer to the water.

Coroner Confirms: Missing Diver Rebecca Weiss Found Dead

KTLA News
11:20 p.m. PDT, August 18, 2012

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. (KTLA) -- Coroner's officials confirmed that the body found floating Saturday morning off the coast of Rancho Palos Verdes was that of Rebecca Weiss, a woman who went missing last week while free diving in the area.

Recreational divers found the body about 11:30 a.m. in a cove about 200 yards from the shore. The body was removed from the water an hour later, sheriff's officials said. The beach was quickly closed off for investigation.

Coroner's investigators have not yet established a cause of death and are set to conduct an autopsy Sunday.

Rebecca's mother, Vilma Causey, told ABC News that her daughter is an experienced diver who was swimming in calm waters near a popular beach.

"I was there yesterday because I wanted to see where this happened, and it's in a cove, it's nice water. There's no strong waves or anything like that. It is a very, very busy place, a big hotel and restaurant. It's for tourists and everybody. There are a lot of people. If she was there, somebody would see her," Causey said.

Causey declined to speculate about whether something suspicious happened to her daughter, saying that she would wait for the investigation to be completed. She said that Rebecca and Alan have been together for 25 years, married for more than 18, and that they seemed to be happy.

It has now been a week since Jini Barnum was last seen.

The East Hampton resident left her home around 11 p.m. on July 28 after having a disagreement with her boyfriend, leaving behind a six-week-old child.

"That's one of the things that really makes it not make sense," Ann King said, "that she was very doting and would leave for more than a few hours without any contact."

King is a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 681 in Middletown. Barnum is a member and the group has been very involved in trying to help find her.

Criminal Investigation Into Missing East Hampton Woman Enters Fourth Week

As police continue to search for Jini Barnum, the woman's boyfriend is arrested on an unexplained charge of violating his parole.

When East Hampton resident Jini Barnum was reported missing on July 28, it was her boyfriend Anthony Garofalo who called 911.

Now Garofalo is incarcerated at Hartford Correctional Center, after being arrested just five days later on a charge of violating his special parole.

The charge against Garofalo is technically unrelated to the ongoing missing-person investigation into the 30-year-old Barnum’s whereabouts. But a spokesman for the state Department of Corrections, Brian Garnett, declined to comment on the nature of the charges that landed Garofalo in jail.

“It’s not something I will go into at the moment because of the ongoing investigation,” Garnett said.

The puppeteer story is disgusting and I am speechless that more than one or two people could be as demented as that was. Although, I would guess that with the internet it makes it easier to find others of like mind. I pray that all resources available are being used to find the others in that chat.

WTF is this world coming to?? Have we become so desensitized that this is somehow becoming more prevalent. Or are we just more aware?

I too wish I had not read the small portion of the affidavit that I was able to stomach. Not complaining just saying that I thought I could be objective and the warnings were strong enough.

@Marcia~

I would not delete it, I think EVERYONE should read it.

People need to be aware of what is out there and not turn a blind eye to it. There are plenty more like this out there.

No, I don't think we should be panicked and turn into a paranoid society. I think we need to be aware and act accordingly. Teach our children from a young age to be aware of their surroundings.

As adults, when you walk out of a store make sure your keys are in hand~ you don't want to be outside, distracted by looking for your keys. Your keys can be used as a weapon also.

Dfcs needs to step up to the plate. I know they are busy, underpaid and overworked. Kids lives depend on their decisions.

The Sheriff's offices need to keep books with their Sex offenders. This is another group that gets shoved under the rug.

Most Sheriff's Dept's do not have the resources or the manpower to accomplish this. This is HOW these people fall into the cracks.

Officials downplay suspicions in diver Rebecca Weiss' death

August 19, 2012 | 10:11 am

Though family members of a 50-year-old free diver found dead Saturday off Palos Verdes Peninsula have cast suspicion about how she died, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department detectives have been careful not to suggest any foul play in connection to the case.

Homicide detectives have been probing the case of Rebecca Weiss, who was reported missing last week by her husband, Alan Weiss. Lt. Holly Francisco of the Sheriff's Department homicide bureau described him as "very cooperative" with investigators.

"He met with detectives and provided a whole statement of his last encounter with her," Francisco said.

Asked whether investigators shared the suspicions aired by Rebecca Weiss' family in the media, Francisco replied, "No."

Honey Boo Boo’s Tragic Diet Borders on Child Abuse

snipped:

Now, I’m not from Georgia nor the South, and I don’t know if this is some sort of local cuisine that I’m just not opening my mind to, but serving road kill to my child isn’t likely to happen ever. But a freshly run-over deer is on the menu at Honey Boo Boo’s house, and that’s not all that frightened me about her diet.

“My special juice is gonna help me win!” Honey Boo Boo wildly announces during a clip from Toddlers & Tiaras. The homemade concoction of Red Bull and Mountain Dew “tastes like apple juice,” and is what her mom, June, uses to get her daughter wound like a top so she can dazzle in pageants.

In an episode of Dr. Drew’s Lifechangers, he tasted the Go Go Juice, and Honey Boo Boo warned that “He’s gonna bounce off the walls.” He didn’t get that far, having only taken a sip, but Dr. Drew almost immediately felt the affects of this chemical cocktail. “I’m starting to sweat a little bit… I can’t speak, my tongue is getting thick… I need to get some water,” he said. Imagine what it’s doing to her six-year-old body!

Missing Kane County woman last seen in Millennium Park

Staff report
8:26 p.m. CDT, August 22, 2012

Tanner Conroyd

A 20-year-old woman supposedly headed to Illinois State University from her Kane County home was last seen at Millennium Park in Chicago but now is reported missing.

Tanner Conroyd left her house on Route 31 in unincorporated Kane County near St. Charles on Sunday after an argument with family members, according to the Kane County sheriff's office. Her father believed she was on her way to Illinois State University in Normal, where she was planning on attending the fall semester although she had not yet enrolled as a student.

Her family called friends in Normal and when they hadn't heard from Conroyd reported her missing Sunday night to the Normal Police Department, which began an investigation with help from the Kane County sheriff and the St. Charles, Sugar Grove and Chicago police departments.

and Elizabeth Gentle

Proctor's ex-wife, Amy Patterson, has been missing since July of 2011.

LEE COUNTY, FL (WAFF) - The Lee County Sheriff's Office in Florida says a body has been recovered near the home a missing teacher shared with her ex-husband.

Detectives and crime scene techs found the remains in a densely wooded area in Bokeelia, Florida after receiving information from 45-year-old Daniel Proctor about the location of the body. A forensics unit will continue excavating remains for most of the day Wednesday. An autopsy will be performed to determine positive identification and cause of death.

The body was discovered Tuesday, the same day Proctor received two life sentences for theft convictions in Madison County, Alabama. Detectives with the Lee County, Florida Sheriff's Department were in Alabama to testify in Proctor's theft trial.

By HLNtv.com Staff

•Deanna Cook was found dead Sunday after making 911 call Friday
•Family says 911 operator told them to check hospitals and jails first
•Cook is reportedly heard screaming for help on the call

Dallas police are investigating why officers did not enter the home of a woman who called 911 screaming for help. Deanna Cook ended up being murdered and her body was not discovered for two days.

Her family say they also called 911 after seeing saw water pouring out of her home, two days after her original call. They say the operator told them they would have to check area hospitals and jails before they would send police to her house a second time.

Police are not releasing the 911 call and now the family wants answers.

Amuay Venezuela Oil Refinery Explosion Kills At Least 39 (VIDEO)

* Gas leak causes blast at 645,000 bpd Amuay facility

* Oil minister says fuel exports will not be affected

* Most of those killed were National Guard troops (Recasts, adds details, color, byline)

By Sailu Urribarri and Marianna Parraga

PARAGUANA/CARACAS, Venezuela, Aug 25 (Reuters) - An explosion tore through Venezuela's biggest refinery on Saturday, killing at least 39 people, wounding dozens and halting operations at the facility in the worst accident to hit the OPEC nation's oil industry.

Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez told Reuters no production units at the Amuay refinery were affected and that there were no plans to halt exports, a sign that the incident will likely have little impact on fuel prices.

Photographs taken shortly after the pre-dawn blast showed wrecked vehicles, flattened fences and giant storage tanks buckling and crumpling as flames lit the night sky. A National Guard building in the area was shattered and officials said a 10-year-old child was among the dead.

Flames rise after an explosion Saturday at the Amuay oil refinery in Punto Fijo, Venezuela

(CNN) -- An explosion rocked the Amuay oil refinery in northwestern Venezuela, killing 39 people, including a 10-year-old boy, a Venezuelan official said Saturday.

More than 80 people were injured, Vice President Elias Jaua told state-run VTV.

"People are very scared," said Falcon State Gov. Stella Lugo, according to the state-run AVN news agency. "They evacuated the areas that had to be evacuated, but the situation, as the technicians are telling within the refinery, is controlled."

Miners barricade selves underground with explosives
By Naomi O’Leary, REUTERS

ROME - Up to 100 Sardinian miners armed with hundreds of kilograms of explosives have barricaded themselves nearly 400 metres underground in Italy’s only coal mine to put pressure on the Rome government to protect its survival.

The miners from a 460-strong workforce seized 350 kilos of company explosives and locked themselves inside the Carbosulcis mine west of Cagliari overnight on Monday, one of them said, ahead of a government meeting this week to discuss the pit’s future.

“We are worried that the mine may close. We are afraid for our jobs,” said Sandro Mereu, 54, a miner who has worked there for 28 years.

“We are prepared to stay here until we hear a response from the government that secures the future of the mine. We will stay here indefinitely,” Mereu told Reuters by telephone.

The miners want the mine to be diversified into a combined mining and carbon capture site to protect its future. Carbon capture is the storing of polluting emissions underground to mitigate global warming.

Carbosulcis was estimated to have 600 million metric tonnes of coal reserves in 2006 but has struggled to stay productive. It was previously occupied in 1984, 1993 and 1995, when protesting workers stayed in a tunnel for 100 days.

Isabella Sarah Tennant's Body Found In Garbage Can; Two Suspects In Custody, Police Say

08/27/12 10:25 PM ET

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — Two teenagers were arrested Monday in connection with the death of a 5-year-old girl who vanished from her great-grandmother's house and whose body was found dumped in a garbage can, authorities said.

The arrests came after one of the teens went to police Monday morning and led them to a garbage can containing a trash bag holding the body of Isabella Tenant, authorities said. He told them he had helped a friend dispose of it after the friend had killed her, they said.

Isabella's family had called police earlier Monday to say she was missing from her great-grandmother's home in Niagara Falls, where she'd been staying overnight. Isabella's great-grandmother said she had last seen her Sunday night with 16-year-old neighbor and family friend John Freeman.

I read all the affidavit, including the sick conversations between sick puppeteer and his sick friend, also the description of images found in his computer and CD. I hope they are doing everything possible to identify every sick bastard including the mother that sold her daughter. I also hope they are trying to identify this "Karsten" sicko from Germany.

Wouldnt it be safe to say that the picture of the missing child poster shows what happened to that child and by which sick thing's hands! I cannot call them persons or anything that gives them some value.

My thoughts are all over the place.. I will try to write again, later.

My hat is off to you Tinyworm I could not get through the affidavit. I can truly understand how your thoughts would be all over the place. I have not been able to shake the images they describe or my absolute horror at what they were so glib about. Again these monsters are not worth the air they breathe, I too hope they find all of them.

A local congregation is offering a reward for information leading to the safe return of an Englewood teenager who disappeared last month.

Touro College student Caroline Starkman, 18, went missing after visiting a "friend" in Brooklyn the weekend of July 6, according to a message from Congregation Ahavath Torah. She also goes by Vicki or Victoria.

The Englewood congregation, where her parents are members, has created a fund to cover a $10,000 reward for information leading to Starkman’s safe return, the message said.

Family members filed a report with police, hired a private investigator and reached out to contacts in Brooklyn, but have now decided to make a public plea for information in the case, the congregation said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Englewood Police Detective Barry Miller at 201-568-4875 or 201-871-6416, or Private Investigator Jerry Clarke 845-264-5105 or 866-357-4769, 24-hours a day.

Woman's torso found floating near Niagara Falls

AP / August 31, 2012

NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario (AP) — A woman’s torso found floating near the base of the Niagara Falls was likely in the water for up to 10 days, and the victim was murdered, police said Friday, as the discovery of a homicide victim’s remains in a waterway made headlines in Canada for the second time in recent weeks.

Police said the latest case is not related to body parts found in Toronto earlier in August. The murder victims have gotten extra attention because of the case of porn actor Luka Magnotta, who is accused of dismembering a Chinese student in Montreal and mailing his body parts to political parties and a school earlier this year.

The Camden County Sheriff's Office is investigating the case of a 24-year-old woman missing since Thursday, Aug. 23. Ivy Dawn Merck has been listed with the National Crime Information Center, Georgia Crime Information Center and Florida Crime Information Center as a missing/endangered person, according to CCSO spokesman Deputy William Terrell.

Merck, a Camden native and University of Georgia graduate, was listed as missing after her father, Steven Merck, told police in Athens that his daughter never arrived home in Kingsland last Thursday.

Merck's vehicle, a dark green 2008 Honda CRV, was found in the town of Deerfield Beach, Fla. after being entered into law enforcement's statewide computer system earlier this week, Terrell said.

According to the missing persons report filed with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, Merck told her roommate and supervisor at the Good Hands Vet Clinic, where she worked as a vet tech, on Tuesday, Aug. 21, that she was leaving Athens to drive home to Kingsland.
