Joe Amendola urges jury to 'keep an open mind,' says Jerry Sandusky will testify

Published: June 11, 2012

By Anne Danahy and Chip Minemyer — State College - Centre Daily Times

Attorney for Jerry Sandusky, Joe Amendola.

BELLEFONTE — In his opening statement, Jerry Sandusky's defense attorney, Joe Amendola, urged the jury hearing the child sex-abuse case against the former Penn State coach to "keep an open mind" and "wait until all the evidence is in."

He also indicated that Sandusky himself will testify, saying the jury will hear from Sandusky in his own words.

Amendola said the evidence may seem overwhelming, comparing the defense's task to climbing Mount Everest.

But he questioned the specifics of what evidence the state actually has. He brought up some of the alleged victims, as did the prosecution in opening arguments, referring to them by first name.

Amendola spoke of one whom he said will testify that he had dinner with the Sanduskys last week.

"You'll have to answer: Does that make sense?" Amendola said.

A Guide To The Child Sexual Abuse Charges Against Jerry Sandusky, And To Penn State’s Alleged Willful Ignorance

~Snipped~

What follows is a summary of the grand jury's report.

• Sandusky's victims all reported a wide array of sexual abuse allegations. Sandusky, who is married, met many of them through The Second Mile. Many spent the night at his home. He brought them to Philadelphia Eagles games, plus Penn State practices, tailgate parties, and home games. One of the victims traveled to the 1998 Outback Bowl and the 1999 Alamo Bowl as a member of Sandusky's family's party. That same victim often stayed with Sandusky at a State College-area hotel on the night before home games. He also frequently dined with the coaching staff and accompanied Sandusky to numerous charity outings. Sandusky had lavished this victim with a variety of gifts. According to the report, "Sandusky even guaranteed [this victim] he could be a walk-on player at Penn State. [The victim] was in a video about linebackers that featured Sandusky, and he appeared with him in a photo accompanying an article about Sandusky in Sports Illustrated." Sandusky later tried to bribe this victim with cigarettes and marijuana after this victim began refusing his advances.

• Also: "[This victim] remembers Sandusky being emotionally upset after having a meeting with Joe Paterno in which Paterno told Sandusky he would not be the next head coach at Penn State and which preceded Sandusky's retirement. Sandusky told the victim not to tell anyone about the meeting. That meeting occurred in May 1999."

• Sandusky was investigated by university police in 1998 after a mother reported to them that her 11-year-old son had showered with Sandusky. A university police detective and a municipal police detective later eavesdropped on a conversation between the mother and Sandusky in which Sandusky answered "I don't know ... maybe" when the mother asked him if he had touched her son inappropriately. He also admitted he had showered with the boy to an investigator with the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. The university police detective advised Sandusky not to shower with a child again, and Sandusky promised he would not. No charges were filed.

• In March 2002, a graduate assistant stumbled upon Sandusky and a boy showering together at Penn State's football facility. The grand jury report included the horrifying details of what that graduate assistant saw and heard:

He did horribly in the Interview with Bob Costas.

Vinnie Politan was wondering today how would he do under cross examination by the prosecution.

That Costas interview was easy too. Well, if Sandusky wasn't sexually attracted to young boys, it'd have been easy. IMO he has a better chance not testifying.

I followed this trial all day. I am sickened and heart sick for these young men. I will probably follow it again tomorrow, but I think this is one trial where I need a break. This just defies any understanding for Penn. State. I feel this jury will do the right thing. I don't think they can be too worried about the Penn State reputation, it is already sullied by them not doing ANYTHING to protect these kids. I am also a football fan, and even though Penn isn't my team, I always had respect for Joe Pa. I think this whole thing broke him. I know he suffered from cancer, but to end his career with the shame and cloud of suspicion that he knew (I think he didn't know as much as folks think) everything, was more than he could take. He did wonderful things for many many kids. This Jerry Sandusky injured the children, his family, his co-workers, his employer and so many more. He deserves prison, he is a child rapist, predator and he will not be rehabilitated. He needs to make a new home where he will be someone's 'girlfriend'.
Ok, rant over.

Jerry Sandusky trial: 'Victim 4' spends 4 hours detailing alleged sexual abuse, betrayal by man he looked up to

Published: Tuesday, June 12, 2012, 12:00 AM

By CHARLES THOMPSON, The Patriot-News

Monday, June 11, 2012 6:22 PM

The man didn’t break down in tears. He didn’t need a break to collect himself.

But in his own way, the 28-year-old man known as Victim 4 told a riveting story in the first day of Jerry Sandusky’s child sex abuse trial.

On the stand for nearly four hours, he told jurors about how he came to meet the fallen Penn State football legend, and how their relationship quickly branched into two weirdly different directions.

There was the public face of Sandusky, the champion of troubled youth and Joe Paterno’s longtime defensive coordinator.

Publicly, a mentor with a sterling reputation was exposing the troubled kid to a life the boy could never have imagined. Sandusky allowed him to rub elbows with Penn State football players.

And then there was the private side, the man said, one filled with increasingly uncomfortable after-hours encounters in the coaches’ shower room on the Penn State campus.

Jerry Sandusky trial's first witness confidently testifies about repeated sexual molestation

By Dan Wetzel | Yahoo! Sports – 4 hours ago

An unidentified witness (left) testifies on Monday as Jerry Sandusky looks on. (Reuters)

BELLEFONTE, Pa. – It was late on a long, hot day inside the Centre County Courthouse, and Jerry Sandusky's defense against sexual molestation charges already had been rocked by powerful, personal testimony of an indomitable witness.

As the first day of the trial grinded through an afternoon of testimony, Sandusky's attorney Joe Amendola kept grasping at straws, kept seeking angles to prop up his client as a kind-hearted guy who was the victim of overaggressive police and money-hungry accusers.

So he tried to take the words of the trial's first witness, known as Victim No. 4 in court documents, and spin them around. Earlier Monday, the witness, who was a weak 13-year-old boy when he met Sandusky but is now a no-nonsense 28-year-old man, had said the former Penn State defensive coordinator treated him "like a son."

Victim No. 4 just shook his head and dismissed the suggestion that anything positive could be gleaned from the description.

"He treated me like a son in front of other people," the witness said, sternly, with an air of scolding toward the defense attorney.

"Aside from that, he treated me like his girlfriend."

As gasps were audibly heard in the courtroom for a line straight off a movie script, Amendola paused, shuffled his notes and kept fumbling as the witness maintained his steely posture.

Clipped-

"(Defense attorney) Amendola was a flailing mess by the end. He seemed unprepared for the cross examination, routinely getting dates and facts wrong and leading the witness into retelling the disturbing tales of abuse in the shower room. If he doesn't have a plan to catch the witness in repeated and profound lies, this made no sense.

It's difficult to tell where the defense will go from here. Seven more alleged victims are scheduled to testify. Amendola noted in opening arguments that Sandusky would defend himself, "in his own words," setting up the prospect of a wild stretch of testimony. "

" A kid who once cowered in front of Jerry Sandusky was all grown up Monday afternoon, strong, fearless and unafraid of telling it all on good old Jer. "

PS. I think this jury has to favor the defendant.
I don't like some of the pick. It would be easy to have a hung jury as two (students) have expressed strong feelings. # 7 and 8 are my concerns.

I feel the sameway. I have friends who live near PSU and who graduated from there and they'd acquit, guilty or not, to protect PSU's rep. I really worry the jurors might feel that way too. A hung jury might be the best bet, though I have to think they'd find him guilty of something.

Witness who spurred Sandusky probe could testify Tuesday

By Kevin Johnson, USA TODAY
June 12, 2012

BELLEFONTE, Pa. – The alleged victim who triggered the wide-ranging criminal investigation of former Penn State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky could testify here as early as Tuesday, as the 68-year-old coach's child sex abuse trial moved into its second day.

The witness, designated in a Pennsylvania grand jury report as "Victim 1," has alleged that Sandusky abused him during a period of four years, starting when the witness was 11 years old.

When the boy's mother became suspicious of Sandusky's alleged behavior, prosecutors have said that she took her son — despite concerns of school officials supportive of Sandusky — to state youth authorities in 2008, prompting the criminal investigation that ultimately resulted in 52 charges against the coach, involving 10 alleged victims during a 15-year period.

I just have to wonder after hearing all the testimony, number 4 was just the first one, if people would really acquit. Its easy to say when you're not the one sitting on the jury. After hearing numerous testimonies, I think the overwhelming weight of the evidence will speak. There are jurors that have young children, I think it would only be natural to look at your kids and feel sick if you think about what happened to these young men when they were kids. I just don't think they will acquitt. JMO

b2b Just my opinion, but I think the reputation of State is sullied already. If they acquit it only makes it worse. They are already looked at because they didn't do anything when they knew. What they did to Joe Pa was very low class as well. I look at it this way, to start to rehab their reputation, they have to try and make this right....not by acquitting.

Hi Tess....good to see you. Like you said, I think that PSU's rep has already been tarnished and they really need to rehab that rep and they need a guity verdict to begin that rehab process. The housecleaning they did with the president etc was a good start, but they need more. I also think what they did to Paterno was wrong.
What I don't get, schools, coaches, teachers etc are mandatory reporters..how can they get by that?

Jerry Sandusky trial: Analysis from reporter Sara Ganim about Day 1

Published: Tuesday, June 12, 2012, 10:10 AM

By Sara Ganim, The Patriot-News

Analysis:

•We’ve heard a lot about the words and testimony of the eight accusers and two eye-witnesses, but prosecutor Joe McGettigan alluded to some other evidence during opening statements that was new.

The biggest one for me was the lists of Second Mile children prosecutors found while executing search warrants. McGettigan says they will show that the accusers had asterisks next to their names.

The letters and contracts were a compelling part of testimony. I wonder what other documents are in the thousands of pages of discovery that defense attorney Joe Amendola says he’s yet to get through.

Summer, I am having the same problem. I think after listening to young man after young man recount the grooming and sexual conduct whether one time or 50, there will be a sick feeling in the pit of the jurors stomachs. I feel that his wife had to know what was going on too. You don't have that many young boys in your home, relagated to the bedroom in the basement while Jerry visits for periods of time without knowing something is amiss. It is a sick family. It does make you wonder if he ever did anything to his own family. I pray not, but it certainly wouldn't be a stretch to think that.

I still think it is most important that they show photos of JS as he looked at that time....Am I the only one who thinks that is important?

well, didn't mean to say supportive of Sandusky - meant to say - how the jury would let him walk. They must be going thru stomach churning info and seeing lives ruined.

Remember when they said Sandusky was just giving "soaping lessons." OMG

tess...lol
I am the last person on earth who doesn't tweet, facebook or have an iphone. My phone makes and receives calls. Thats it. I think Facebook is useless for me and I have no desire to tell, nor hear, what someone is doing every second of the day....so no, I don't have Facebook. Laughing

Good morning all....everything that I've read indicates that there is no "cure" for pedophelia (sp?). IIRC, one of the estranged DIL's refuses to let her children visit/spend time with their grandfather (JS) due to her strong belief in his errant behavior. Seems like his oldest adopted son bio family also had issues with them. Sorry I don't have links to back this up - I just remember reading about it when he was first arrested.

To me the pattern and consistency of the behavior (ie, grown man showering with young boys, etc) will be hard for a jury to ignore....imo, they won't acquit.

I don't know. Maybe. lol

I do think Sandusky probably did something to someone in his family. Probably why some won't let him around his grandkids.

I'm also surprised that the defense here didn't say that Sandusky was sexually abused as a child.

They actually did.

'Pictures of Sandusky and the then-boy were shown at times on a video screen. The man was asked to identify photos handed to him by McGettigan, including those with Penn State football players, but rarely looked over when the pictures were displayed on a screen large enough for jurors to see."
