Missouri Republican: 'Legitimate rape' rarely causes pregnancy

Todd Akin on the The Jaco Report

August 19, 2012

By Michael O'Brien, NBC News

Updated 8:55 p.m. — A Republican Senate nominee found himself in hot water on Sunday for suggesting that instances of "legitimate rape" rarely results in pregnancy.

Rep. Todd Akin, a Republican who's locked in a hard-fought campaign in Missouri to unseat Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, was answering a question regarding his position on abortion rights in instances when a woman is a victim of rape.

"People always want to make it into one of those things — well, how do you slice this particularly tough ethical question," Akin said in an interview on KTVI-TV, video of which was circulated by the Democratic super PAC American Bridge.

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors, [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," Akin said.

Gee, this guy is a walking billboard for sex ed in school!
We laughed about this because he reminded me of my former brother-in-law. He was in his early 20s when his wife became pregnant. He was positive she was going to have a boy. I asked him, "how do you know?" expecting him to recite some sort of test. Instead he said, "Everyone knows it is the guy who makes the decision. So I said I wanted a boy." Of course, I just had to ask who he told this to? He looked at me totally confounded!!! Priceless look!!!

(They had a girl, by the way.)

I thought there was only one man this dumb.
Guess I was wrong. My first husband was 26
and had been married and had a child when we
met. He had NO CLUE HOW pregnancy occurred.
Other than the basic physical act. At some point
in time everyone of our four children have asked
me to TELL them the TRUTH..
"Just who is my REAL father?"
They love him, but they all know he is dumber than
a door nob, and they wonder where they got their
brains.
LOL.. sure wasn't from me.
I was dumb enough to marry their father.
They all swear there must have been a mail man,
milk man, vacuum cleaner salesman or long haul
truck driver involved. Laughing

He can have this nice certificate.

Besides being insulting to all women, his comment is an insult to any woman who has ever been raped, particularily those who have gotten pregnant as a result. I can't imagine being in that position! But he makes it sound like if a woman is raped and she does get pregnant as a result, her body didn't "shut that whole thing down" because somehow she and/or her body welcomed it, wanted to bear the slimeball's child?

What an idiotic statement!

He sort of makes me wonder if at some point in his sorry life he was accused of something similar ... but hey it can't be true because a child resulted..

I always wonder when someone has an absolute inane justification for behaviour...

What I got out of it was that women should be punished for unprotected sex by making them raise a baby they don't want. To say that if it is rape then she wouldn't get pregnant doesn't help a 12 year old raped by her father. I won't say it is because he's male and they are all stupid because they are not. I have heard women say stupid shit like this too. It's sad we have to fight for the right to make decisions for our own bodies. I don't favor abortion, AT ALL, but if for some reason(rape maybe), at 42, I would heavily consider it. I want it to be my choice to raise a child, no matter the circumstances. He doesn't even want to pay for the morning after pill. Fucking Moron. I didn't know this until recently but in some states survivors have to pay for their own rape kit!!!!

Don't get me wrong, abortion is a terrible thing to have to consider and I think most, if in a healthy state of mind would actually choose to keep the baby. It should be their choice. Abortion is out of control, it isn't something that should be ignored either. It's like gun control though, responsibility lies with the one with the control over their body/gun. Some women (I use that term mildly) use abortion as a form of birth control. There should be a limit to the funding of killing babies. Apple and Oranges, I know but we do need reform in that area, just not stupid politicians making inane remarks that will probably cost him his election.

bolded and coloured section by me: Are you serious... so then the implication is that if you don't pay.... then ??? It didn't happen!! you asked for it??? the perpetrator goes free... That is absolutely terrible... hopefully there is some agency that will assist those who cannot afford the fee to obtain the rape kit... I am gobsmacked!

I am not in favour of Abortion either... but one of the moments that made me proudest of my father was when my cousin who was in her teens (14) became pregnant and she was very naive and really wasn't able to make the informed consent and was pushed into the act by a much older man (26)...said that the only person who could make the decision about what would happen.. abortion or term and either keeping the baby or placing for adoption was my cousin as it was her body and a decision that would haunt her or be proud of for the rest of her life. He said she was the only one who could know what she could live with. He was 80 years old at the time and this was 20 years ago. Most of the family was horrified at his candour...I applauded him... BTW once the pressure was off for her to make the decision because she had one person willing to go to bat for her, she chose to go full term and place the child for adoption. Having my father stand up to everyone else gave her choice and gave her the power/control back!

B&UBM.
Like you, I don't think elective termination should be used as a form of birth control. However, the decision is a very personal choice and one that a woman struggles to make. I used to schedule these in ob/gyn office (no, they weren't done in our office but in the hospital OR and not very often). I'm telling you, these women were torn to pieces over the decision. I didn't judge; that was not my place since I didn't live their lives. I was judged all of my life and I'll be damned if I was going to have an opinion about their decision since I didn't know the complete picture. Above all, this decision should be left up to that individual woman. We can't move backward anymore.

Again, what exactly is a legitimate rape? What constitutes an illegitimate rape? Are there guidelines? I do know for a fact that there are NOT diagnoses/billing codes for legitimate rape, or illegitimate rape for that matter. So WTF is he talking about? Dude has until 5pm Central Time today to step down and says he's not (just heard on Shep Smith, only thing I watch of Faux News pretty much).

I took someone to get an abortion many years ago. I was in my 20's and had two small boys already. She was only 19 and the little sister of a good friend. No one in her family knew (including my friend) and I'm not sure why she trusted me but I took her and I was sure glad I did. It was a terrible experience, not the abortion, which I know was devastating for her but the scene outside the clinic was bizarre. There was an old man dressed in all black. He looked dead already, which I'm sure was no accident. He and about five others were picketing the abortion clinic. They were carrying signs with pictures of partial fetus' and shouting bible verses at us. For some reason it all felt very evil, not something of God.

She was just a kid and she didn't deserve that. She ended up marrying her bf a few years later.

I can't wait till the election is over.

ETA: I mentioned that I had two small sons already because I had a hard time with it due to the fact that I was already a mother and couldn't imagine terminating a pregnancy. It wasn't my choice though and I prayed for her to make the right decision. I don't know if she ever got over it, I know it was very sad watching her go through it. I'm glad I was able to help her. Her family was crazy religious and it would have been very bad if they had known. AFAIK they still don't know.

He is of the '60s mentality: Bet he is thinking, "Legitimate rape means she wasn't just teasing and playing hard to get; she was still a virgin" and all the rest of the bs.

He needs to step aside. His views are out of sync with the majority of America. Besides, his opinions on abortion are just that: HIS. The Supreme Court has ruled so it is a moot issue, IMO. Move on.

The bad thing is the opponent, Claire McCaskill, needs to be defeated.

---She authorized hundreds of thousands of dollars to be spent on alternative energy then saw to it her BROTHER rec the money!

---She has billed her constituents for her almost weekly flights to and from DC. On PRIVATE jet, not commercial. Oh. The plane is owned by her HUSBAND. The charges were inflated for actual costs and the trips were excessive.

It does not matter, any more, both parties have some scummy representatives in DC. Morals seem to have gone out with yesterday, IMO.

(BTW, Adkins, who shared stunning news of a woman's ability to abort IF she was "really raped" sits on a SCIENCE committee! )

The Internet sounds off on rape definition

By AJ Willingham
updated 6:04 PM EDT, Tue August 21, 2012

•Rep. Todd Akin's 'legitimate rape' comments have set the Internet on fire
•A lot of the conversation has focused around the definition of the term 'rape'

By now, Missouri congressman and Senate candidate Todd Akin's comment about abortion and "legitimate rape" has become the sound bite heard 'round the world. His claims, subsequent apologies, and ongoing debate over whether he should remove himself from the race have raised some broad, hotly-debated questions. Here are some choice quotes, from both sides of the conversation:

"If people like Todd Akin have his way, the definition of 'legitimate rape' might become a serious legal concern. How raped will you have to be to get a 'legitimate' shot at an abortion..." -- Elie Mystal, Above the Law

@Dis -- You were very brave and kind to help your friend's sister. The fact that she came to you, that she knew you would keep this secret forever if need be and possibly affect your friendship with your friend, her older sister tells me a lot about you. Hopefully, your prayers led her to make the right decision for herself.

The fact that she was able to DECIDE is what we have to make sure is a right that is not taken away from women. Just because the right to decide is available doesn't mean that people who don't believe in elective termination should dictate that opinion on people who feel differently and vise versa. Anyways JMHO. ~~C

Dear Mr. Akin, I Want You to Imagine (excerpt/snipped)

"Mr. Akin, your words have kept me awake.

As a rape survivor, I am reeling from your recent statement where you said you misspoke when you said that women do not get pregnant from legitimate rape, and that you were speaking "off the cuff." "

•Todd Akin says he misspoke when he said “legitimate rape” rarely leads to pregnancy
•He made the statement while talking about abortion policies
•Akin released a statement apologizing and also saying he does not plan to resign

I stopped watching JVM a long time ago. She is the worst type of journalist out there.

That being said, kudos to the rape survivor for telling her story and counseling others going though what she did. I applaud her ability to keep and raise her child, it says alot about the people she surrounds herself with. One look at her little girl and you know her mother will protect her from what evil she may encounter. Sex crimes are so under reported and I feel like things like this are the reason why. We have come so far in that respect but when someone with power over others make statements like the one Rep. A made, it sets us back. Wayyyy back.

Thanks for posting this Alessandra_Deux.

C~~Yeah, I was very young also, so it was scary. I'm glad I took her though because in every experience, good or bad, we learn something. She became one of my very close friends and still is. My friend (her sis) ended up moving away and never married. She lives alone and has one very close female friend. We are all still friends but no one mentions her "friend" at her parents' house. And that's all I'll say about that. lol

WOW That was a very moving letter! Thank you! The only comments I read were in support so I'm not sure if you meant a different type of post but I only read the first page. Great letter! Why isn't she running for something? I love smart people!!!!

Todd Akin Still Doesn’t Get What’s Wrong With Saying ‘Legitimate Rape’

Charlotte Alter @charlottealter July 17, 2014

He says it's a law enforcement term. It's not.

...“Legitimate rape is a law enforcement term, it’s an abbreviation for ‘legitimate case of rape,'” he told Chuck Todd. “A woman calls a police station, the police investigate, she says ‘I’ve been raped,’ they investigate that. So before any of the facts are in, they call it a legitimate case of rape,” explained Aiken.

...“I’ve taught police officers, and worked with police officers on every continent in the world, and that’s something I’ve never heard in my 50 years in law enforcement,” says Dr. James A. Williams, former Chief of Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces for the U.S Department of Justice, who also worked in municipal law enforcement in New Jersey. “I’ve never heard of that. Never.”
