Painstaking path to bush grave where Jill Meagher's body was found

Anthony Dowsley
Herald Sun
September 29, 2012
12:00AM

DETECTIVES in teams working parallel investigations cracked the case that led to the discovery of Jill Meagher's body six days after she was reported missing.

The crucial breakthrough came on Tuesday when police uncovered CCTV footage from Sydney Rd, Brunswick, revealing a man wearing a blue hoodie speaking to Jill Meagher.

They were able to see his face and eventually identified him as their suspect, accused man Adrian Ernest Bayley.

Police had footage from at least two shops capturing Ms Meagher's journey along Sydney Rd.

One camera was inside Duchess Boutique facing out to Sydney Rd, less than 100m from Hope St.

That footage was released to the media showing Ms Meagher approached by a man in a blue hoodie as she made her way home.

The other camera was shooting along Sydney Rd from a pizza shop farther south along the strip.

Police feared more killings

Date: September 29 2012

Police suspected Jill Meagher's killer might strike again and acted quickly, writes John Silvester.

At first it was just a missing person's case. A person who had a little too much to drink had not made it home - an event that happens every night across Australia

By Saturday afternoon Homicide Crew Four, the suspicious missing persons unit under Detective Sergeant Dave Butler, began to monitor the situation. Soon it became obvious this was not a matter of a night spent on someone's couch.

Jill Meagher's phone had gone dead and she had not attempted to access her bank accounts, which discounted thoughts she had engineered her own disappearance.

We all hoped for the best, but in the end the story of Jill Meagher ended in grief and tears

Andrew Rule
Herald Sun

THIS time, Black Friday didn't fall on the 13th.

Storm clouds loomed and lightning split a malevolent sky as Victorians woke yesterday to the bleak news that shocked all and surprised none.

While most of us slept, tired detectives had recovered poor Jill Meagher's body from a shallow grave beside a gravel road in farm country beyond the suburbs.

The police had been led there by the man they'd arrested 12 hours before - Adrian Ernest Bayley.

Without his instructions, they could not have found Black Hill Rd, Gisborne South, to do their ghastly job.

What a hideous waste of Jill Meagher's precious life

I DIDN'T know Jill Meagher, but like many of you, I shed a quiet tear for her this week, writes Susie O'Brien.

It is hard to accept that a smart, gorgeous woman went from a night out with friends to being abducted, raped and killed by a stranger she encountered on a busy city street.

The grim reality is so awful that it's making many of us question our own choices.

I, for one, have been in exactly the same situation as Jill, alone on the street in the early hours of the morning after a night out.

She should have been safe. Sydney Rd, Brunswick - the main road Jill was walking along when she met her attacker - is vibrant, cosmopolitan and busy.

Jill Meagher's accused killer appears in Melbourne Magistrates' Court, charged with rape and murder

by: Paul Anderson Herald Sun September 28, 2012 1:18PM

UPDATE: THE man charged over the disappearance of ABC employee Jill Meagher sat with head bowed in court this afternoon, charged with rape and murder.

Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41, of Coburg, sat in the dock of courtroom one at Melbourne Magistrates' Court only metres from Ms Meagher's husband Tom and her brother Michael - both men sitting in the first row in the courtroom flanked by homicide squad detectives.

~Snipped~

Mr Bayley sat in jeans and a blue T-shirt, a tattoo prominent on his muscled arm.

His face appeared flushed.

His legal aid defence lawyer told Ms Popovic there were no custody management issues.

In a meek-sounding voice, Mr Bayley replied "Yes" when Ms Popovic asked him if he understood that she could not entertain a bail application due to the murder charge.

Tom Meagher shot a gaze at Mr Bayley as guards led him from the court, and then whispered something to Ms Meagher's brother.

Meagher death prompts Melbourne CCTV audit

Updated 3 minutes ago

The Victorian Government has ordered an audit of Melbourne's CCTV network following the death of ABC employee Jill Meagher.

~Snipped~

Premier Ted Baillieu has requested Victoria Police audit Melbourne's CCTV network and identify any blackspots in the city or suburbs.

As part of the audit, Mr Baillieu says he expects more CCTV cameras to be installed over the next 12 months.

"We committed in Opposition to continue the roll out of CCTV cameras, we believe they play an important role in providing security and safety for the public and we've seen this week that there's a huge contribution that can be made," he said.

"I've asked Victoria Police to give us advice on where they believe there may be some need for further cameras and we've got a program to roll out cameras in those situations.

The Brunswick mother says her 20-year-old daughter frequents Bar Etiquette, where Ms Meagher was drinking with work colleges the night she went missing.

Another local woman, Michelle Taylor, says her community is shattered. "Everybody is devastated," she says. "We all walk home alone; you feel safe because there are always people around."

Former Victorian police sergeant Brian Murphy says communities are more disturbed by random attacks than they are by crimes of passion because the victim is arbitrary.

A week of agonised waiting in Melbourne

The Irish Times - Saturday, September 29, 2012
HÉLÈNE HOFMAN

The days between Jill Meagher’s disappearance and the discovery of her body were tense and emotional for her family, friends and the Irish community

JILL MEAGHER’S DESK at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) in Melbourne was neatly arranged earlier this week, with a row of folders for staff rosters, safety procedures and leave forms, a bowl of binder clips, and highlighters. An envelope marked “Jill” rested by the computer screen with taxi receipts waiting to be filed.

“Jill is our unit manager. She keeps the place running,” said John Faine, a well-known presenter on 774, ABC’s Melbourne radio station, as they waited for news. “It’s impossible to imagine that something bad may have happened,” he said, calling her a delightful colleague.

Even before Meagher’s body was discovered, on Thursday, and a man charged with her rape and murder, her absence had been weighing heavily on the ABC office.

Role for social media in solving crime

The Irish Times - Saturday, September 29, 2012
DAVID COCHRANE, Communities Editor

ONLINE INTEREST: EXPERTS IN Australia have said the role of social media in the hunt for information relating to Jill Meagher’s abduction and murder is unprecedented.

Kristen Boschma, a social media expert in Melbourne, told Australia’s The Age newspaper that the level of interest in the case on social media was “unprecedented other than natural disasters in Australia”.

A “missing” poster for Meagher, posted by her husband Thomas from his own Facebook account, was shared almost 3,000 times, while the “Help us find Jill Meagher” Facebook page, set up just hours after it was announced last Sunday that she was missing, garnered over 67,000 supporters by Wednesday morning, and a further 60,000 in the next 24 hours. On Twitter, Meagher’s name was mentioned more than 12 million times using #jillmeagher and #meagher hashtags, which became trending topics.

A small group of men, women and children stood staring and when the rain began to fall, no one moved.

Liz, 52, said she felt sick at the thought she had been driving past the tranquil spot all week.

"It's picture perfect, it's why we live here," she said. "It's a little grassy area in between two trees overlooking quite a few hundred acres of rolling hills. It's beautiful."

She has now begun organising a candlelight walk to the site, to be held at the appropriate time, and with the blessing of Ms Meagher's family.

Tomorrow will see a spontaneous peace march to honour Jill Meagher and in solidarity with all women to begin at noon along Sydney Road, Brunswick, from the corner with Moreland Road.

Requiem for Irish emigrant Jill Meagher -- the tragic loss of a wonderful young woman

Posted on Friday, September 28, 2012 at 08:22 AM
by Niall O'Dowd

I didn’t know Jill Meagher, the young Irish emigrant from the town of Drogheda found brutally raped and murdered in Australia, but I feel like I did.

She hails from the same town in Ireland as me, was an emigrant from Ireland like me and I’m sure she had the same hopes and dreams that all emigrants from my hometown have – to make it good somewhere in the world and to make people proud.

Jill, just 29, did all that and was living her dream in a Melbourne suburb happily married and working in a good job with the local radio station.

Then a horrible twist of fate saw her leaving her local pub to walk home last Saturday morning and being accosted by a fiend who raped and murdered her.

'It could have been me'

Terrified … Stacey Scaife. Photo: Michael Clayton-Jones

A 23-YEAR-OLD woman was threatened to be killed only two blocks from where Jill Meagher was abducted, in uncannily similar circumstances.

Melbourne nurse Stacey Scaife went into Brunswick Police Station in December and asked if she could buy pepper spray to defend herself from a ''terrifying'' man who had approached her on two seperate occasions in nearly exactly the same spot Ms Meagher was last seen alive.

The man crept up behind her on a dark side street wearing a black-hooded leather jacket, jeans and white shoes and told her he was going to strangle her with nunchucks while he ''wrenched'' black leather gloves.

Despite describing the threat to police and asking how she could defend herself in future, she said no details of the incident were recorded. At the time, Ms Scaife lived about 500 metres metres from murder-victim Jill Meagher, 29, who was abducted in an opportunistic, random attack on Sydney Road just over a week ago.

Jill Meagher's death will make us all re-evaluate the way we live

•Susie O'Brien
•From: Sunday Herald Sun
•September 30, 2012 12:00AM

LIKE all of Australia, I was shocked and saddened by what has happened to Jill Meagher.

As women, we like to think we are equal to men.

But Meagher's terrible death is a reminder that women are often not as safe as men.

It's not a point I acknowledge with any satisfaction or relish.

We women have told ourselves for decades that we can do anything men can do. We can do the same jobs. We are as tough, strong and capable as any bloke. We can fight in wars, battle fires and walk on the moon if we want.

But this week we have had a sudden and tragic reminder that women are vulnerable in a way men are not.

The latest Victorian Crime Statistics show women are twice as likely as men to be kidnapped, and four times more likely to be raped. For a long time, I have written about how the biggest threat to women is inside the home, not on the streets.

EDITORIAL: Jill Meagher's fatal walk a sad reminder

by: The Editor | The Sunday Mail (Qld) | September 30, 2012 12:00AM

THE alleged rape and murder of ABC radio worker Jill Meagher must horrify all those who believe we are entitled to go about our business in safety.

The awful crime may have been committed in Melbourne but it strikes a discordant note with all Australians.

The circumstances are familiar to us all. Ms Meagher, a young married woman, was walking home from a nearby bar after drinks with her work colleagues. She was not seen again until her body was found in a shallow bush grave about a 40-minute drive from where she disappeared.

There was nothing unusual about her last night, there was nothing outrageous about her keeping late hours and there was nothing overtly foolish about her setting out to walk a short distance to where she lived with her husband.

Yet, that short walk ended when, allegedly, her path crossed that of Adrian Bayley, who is now charged with her rape and murder. Much is to be established about Ms Meagher's fate and everything is to be established about Mr Bayley's alleged role in her death but the raw facts are sufficient reminder that life is fragile and that the most innocent and unsuspecting of us could fall foul of murder in the most innocuous of circumstances.

Melb to pause for Jill Meagher

Updated: 09:47, Sunday September 30, 2012

A peace march in honour of dead Melbourne woman Jill Meagher will wind its way through the inner suburb of Brunswick on Sunday.

Organisers say the march will bring the local community together to protest against violence after the 29-year-old Irish national was allegedly raped and killed following a night out with friends at a Brunswick bar last week.

The march down Sydney Road will begin at midday (AEST) at the corner of Moreland Road and continue down to Brunswick Road.

Moreland Mayor John Kavanagh said while the council was not involved in organising the event, it was supporting it.

The long arm of modern technology

John Mangan and Cameron Houston September 30, 2012

THE closed-circuit security footage from a Sydney Road shop was only part of the technological arsenal police used to investigate the murder of Jill Meagher.

Sometime after the moment Ms Meagher was captured on CCTV speaking to her alleged killer, police will allege he removed the SIM card from her phone, sources told The Sunday Age yesterday.

But not before investigators used information provided by Vodafone and the operators of the CityLink tollway to narrow the search for their main suspect. The Sunday Age understands cameras on the Tullamarine Freeway may have captured footage that helped lead to Adrian Bayley's arrest.

Even though Ms Meagher's phone was low on power and had turned itself off, it could still be traced, said Nigel Phair, director of the Centre for Internet Safety at the University of Canberra and a former officer with the Australian Federal Police.

Thousands of people have marched down the Melbourne street where slain woman Jill Meagher was last seen alive, joined both in grief at her shocking death and to protest against violence throughout the community.

Families with young children, couples and groups of friends - most of whom never knew the 29-year-old but shared in the horror of her alleged abduction and murder last weekend - formed a crowd stretching well over a kilometre that marched along Brunswick's Sydney Road from noon (AEST) on Sunday.

Many carried flowers, photos of the late Ms Meagher and placards with slogans urging peace and harmony as they walked from Moreland Road to Brunswick Road.

Jill Meagher

Jill Meagher's accused killer will be moved into the highest level of prison protection over fears he will be attacked by other inmates, according to a report.

Adrian Ernest Bayley faces danger from other inmates who want to kill him, the Herald Sun reports.

The 41-year-old was arrested last Thursday and later charged with the rape and murder of Ms Meagher.

"Even the crooks are saying they want to kill him because she was an innocent," a source was quoted by the newspaper as saying.

Safety fears for Meagher's accused killer

9:42 AM Monday Oct 1, 2012

The man accused of raping and killing Melbourne woman Jill Meagher will receive Victoria's highest level of protection in jail amid fears for his safety.

It come as thousands of people marched down the street where the Irish ABC employee was last seen alive.

The 29-year-old's death has been met with fury, with some prisoners wanting to kill Adrian Ernest Bayley, while others have prayed for her during a church service at the Metropolitan Remand Centre (MRC), The Herald Sun reported.

Bayley is in danger from fellow inmates because of the nature of the case, and may be moved as early as today, the paper said.

The major offenders' unit, which handles high-profile and gangland inmates, has been assigned to handle his placement. Bayley is likely to be transferred to the MRC or Barwon Prison.

For Jill Meagher, a city marches in silence

by: Chip Le Grand | The Australian | October 01, 2012 12:00AM

(VIDEO)

RARELY have so many people gathered to make so little noise. For the length of a city suburb, they stretched, walking hand in hand, pushing prams, wheeling bikes, walking pets.

They brought no loudspeakers, no chants, but something far more powerful: 10,000 thoughts for Jill Meagher.

There were no organisers, few political add-ons. Where most crowds are rented, this one spilled willingly from homes in Brunswick, the suburb where Meagher lived with her husband Tom, and from across Melbourne.

Facebook refuses to take down Meagher site

11:30 AEST Mon Oct 1 2012

Social media giant Facebook is refusing a police request to take down hate material posted in response to Jill Meagher's death.

Victoria Police chief commissioner Ken Lay says police asked Facebook to take down a site over the weekend.

We had cause to speak to Facebook over the weekend and asked them to take a particular site down," Mr Lay told Fairfax Radio on Monday.

"Now they have refused to do that so we're just working our way through that about what we can do now."

Mr Lay said while social media had been very helpful during the investigation, it had also posed difficulties.

Old friends and neighbours remember Jill

Rhianna King, The West Australian

Old friends and neighbours remember Jill

Jill Meagher's friends and former neighbours gathered outside her childhood home in Bull Creek yesterday to comfort each other and share their favourite memories of her.

Locals lit candles, wrote messages of support to Ms Meagher's family and brought flowers and old photos of the 29-year-old and her family, who were much-loved members of the neighbourhood.

Ms Meagher moved to the neighbourhood with her brother Michael and parents Edith and George McKeon in the early 1990s, and they all formed lifelong friendships with families along the small street.

Stories of playing spotlight in the street, cheeky childhood pranks and countless games of street hockey were shared by friends, who described Ms Meagher as an effervescent, kind-hearted and beautiful person.

Social media could impact jury trial of Jill Meagher's alleged killer Adrian Ernest Bayley

by: Pia Akerman | The Australian | October 01, 2012 1:11PM

TED Baillieu has foreshadowed possible legal changes to address the impact of social media on jury trials, after Victoria Police asked Facebook to take down one page which could influence the Jill Meagher case.

Police and Ms Meagher's husband Tom have asked social media users to exercise caution in light of court proceedings which have started against Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41, who is charged with raping and murdering Ms Meagher.

Murder spurs push for more city CCTV cameras

Kate Emery and Luke Eliot, The West Australian
Updated October 1, 2012, 2:45 am

WA's Police Union and the State Opposition want more security cameras in Perth's nightlife areas amid concerns there are big blind spots in the CCTV network.

Central Perth and Northbridge have almost 200 cameras under the City of Perth's control but other suburbs have much fewer or, in some cases, none.

Police Minister Liza Harvey said the cameras, which played a key role in the arrest of the alleged killer of former Perth woman Jill Meagher in Melbourne last week, were "an effective tool in both preventing and solving crimes".

Facebook won't take down Meagher sites

Updated: 23:29, Monday October 1, 2012

Social media giant Facebook is yet to shut down sites inciting hatred and violence against the man charged with the murder of Melbourne woman Jill Meagher.

Victoria Police has asked Facebook to cancel about six sites, but Deputy Commissioner Tim Cartwright says the social media network operator has declined.

Facebook said it was working with Victorian police and was committed to acting quickly to remove or restrict content if it violated the company's policies or the law.

'We take our statement of rights and responsibilities very seriously and react quickly to remove reported content that violates our policies and also to restrict access to content in a country, where we are advised that it violates local law,' a Facebook statement said.

'While we do not comment on individual requests or cases, we can confirm that we are still in contact with the local law enforcement in Victoria.'

Sydney Road peace march organiser expected ten people to turn up

Posted by: Ellen Feely | 1 October, 2012 - 7:38 AM

Thousands march down Sydney Road in Brunswick (Photo: Justin McManus)

The organiser of yesterday’s peace march through Sydney Road in Brunswick yesterday to honour Jill Meagher has said he had only expected around ten people to turn up.

Instead, an estimated 30,000 people poured into Sydney Road to honour the memory of the late 29-year-old woman whose tragic fate has touched the lives of Melburnians.

Phillip Werner, the man who organised the march, told Derryn Hinch he was so touched about hearing her body had been found that he created posters to promote the walk to distribute among friends and news organisations.
He said even on Sunday morning, he didn’t have much of a sense of the impact of what his posters would create, and a police officer had asked if the few hundred people that had initially turned up could walk down the footpath. The size later increased one hundred fold.

Victoria to push for new national laws to cut the risk that social media will jeopardise trials

by: Grant McArthur From: Herald Sun October 02, 2012 12:00AM

VICTORIA will push for new national laws to cut the risk that social media will jeopardise criminal trials as fears grow about messages relating to the man charged with the murder of Jill Meagher.

Victorian Attorney-General Robert Clark will meet lawmakers from the federal and other state governments on Friday for urgent talks about the dangers of sites such as Facebook and Twitter influencing juries and undermining trials.

The action comes after Facebook refused Victoria Police requests to immediately take down hundreds of hate-filled Facebook messages directed at Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41.

Victorians say no to violence: Baillieu

Melissa Iaria, AAP
Updated October 1, 2012, 2:17 pm

The tens of thousands of Victorians who marched with heavy hearts to remember slain woman Jill Meagher were a show of strength against violence, Premier Ted Baillieu says.

Mr Baillieu said he was unsurprised by the massive turnout for Sunday's rally in Brunswick to grieve for Irish-born Ms Meagher and urge an end to violence in the community.

"I think it's an enormously powerful statement but in many ways I'm not surprised, because I think Victorians are very, very keen for a change of culture in regard to violence and particularly violence against women," Mr Baillieu told ABC radio on Monday.

"To that extent, I think many Victorians would've come from all over the place to join that otherwise spontaneous gathering."

Facebook refuses request to drop Meagher page

And a spokesman for the Victorian Attorney-General Robert Clark told ABC TV last night that he would seek urgent agreement from attorneys-general in other states to adopt a ''co-ordinated, national approach'' to address the challenges of social media to the legal process. Commonwealth, state and territory attorneys-general are due to meet in Brisbane on Friday.

Facebook has so far refused to remove the pages, prompting Victoria Police to issue its own statement on Facebook last night, warning social media users any offensive comments would be investigated by police.

''Victoria Police is aware of the existence of a number of Facebook pages inciting hateful activity and offensive or threatening comments in relation to the accused in the Gillian [Jill] Meagher investigation.

''Any pages or posts that appear to be in breach of Victorian contempt laws will be reported to the E-Crime Squad for investigation,'' the post said.
