Two explosions went off near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, witnesses told NBC News.

Video from the finish line showed screams and an enormous cloud of white smoke, and about 20 seconds between the explosions. The Associated Press reported that bloody spectators were being carried to a medical tent that had been set up to care for tired runners.

Jackie Bruno, a reporter for New England Cable News, said on Twitter that she saw people’s legs blown off.

Boston Marathon Bombing: Twitter, Vine, and a Faster Terror

By Tim Molloy | The Wrap – 1 hour 20 minutes ago

It became clear Monday that whoever carried out the Boston Marathon bombing did so -- like the instigators of so many past terrorist attacks -- with the intention of drawing as much media attention as possible. The bomber or bombers succeeded. The first explosion was captured on television news, and a widely circulated Vine recording of it condensed the carnage to a six-second loop.

It was horrible: A fireball. The image freezing ever-so-briefly. Flags from around the world -- there to celebrate a spirit of international unity -- blown over by the blast. And the worst of it, apparently, off to the right, striking those who came out to watch and cheer runners on.

Boston Marathon bombing kills 3, injures over 140

By JIMMY GOLEN— Apr. 16 12:15 AM EDT

BOSTON (AP) — Two bombs exploded in the crowded streets near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, killing at least three people and injuring more than 140 in a bloody scene of shattered glass and severed limbs that raised alarms that terrorists might have struck again in the U.S.

A White House official speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still unfolding said the attack was being treated as an act of terrorism.

President Barack Obama vowed that those responsible will "feel the full weight of justice."

As many as two unexploded bombs were also found near the end of the 26.2-mile course as part of what appeared to be a well-coordinated attack, but they were safely disarmed, according to a senior U.S. intelligence official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity because of the continuing investigation.

The fiery twin blasts took place about 10 seconds and about 100 yards apart, knocking spectators and at least one runner off their feet, shattering windows and sending dense plumes of smoke rising over the street and through the fluttering national flags lining the route. Blood stained the pavement, and huge shards were missing from window panes as high as three stories.

"They just started bringing people in with no limbs," said runner Tim Davey of Richmond, Va. He said he and his wife, Lisa, tried to shield their children's eyes from the gruesome scene inside a medical tent that had been set up to care for fatigued runners, but "they saw a lot."

"They just kept filling up with more and more casualties," Lisa Davey said. "Most everybody was conscious. They were very dazed."

As the FBI took charge of the investigation, authorities shed no light on a motive or who may have carried out the bombings, and police said they had no suspects in custody. Officials in Washington said there was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Aftermath of Boston Marathon Bombing: How Do Terrorists Use Improvised Explosive Devices?

By Larry Greenemeier | Scientific American – 3 hrs ago

The bombing near the finish line of the 117th Boston Marathon on Monday killed two and injured more than 100 people on site. Now comes the search for who planted and detonated the explosives, and the motive.

The first bomb was detonated at about 2:45 P.M. local time near one of the many classic storefronts lining the marathon’s home stretch. The second explosive followed within minutes about 50 to 100 yards away. Law enforcement later found and dismantled at least two more explosive devices, according to various news reports.

Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) such as those used to attack the marathon are sometimes triggered remotely by cell phones. The Associated Press initially reported that law enforcement had the cell network in the vicinity of the finish line shut down after the incident, but later reports contradicted this, indicating that problems receiving a signal were due to the volume of cell phone users on the network.

~Snipped~

Reports indicate that IEDs were responsible Monday’s attack on bystanders at the Boston Marathon. Most people have heard the term “IED” in relation to combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, but what, exactly, is an IED?

Most improved explosive devices include the following components: a cheap cell phone, electrical wire, a fuse, batteries (AA or 9-volt), electrical tape and a thyristor (a solid-state semiconductor device). This last piece provides the option of letting you wire into the positive and negative diodes of the speaker on the cell phone board.

Tight security will be rule today in Boston

Boylston Street area to be locked down for several days

By Michael Levenson and Eric Moskowitz | Globe Staff April 16, 2013

Boston Police set up a roadblock at Gloucester and Newbury street as officials closed down a large part of Back Bay to facilitate an investigation.

Boston will be largely open for business on Tuesday, but so much will be different, as a wounded city awakens to higher security and heightened vigilance following the deadly bombings at the Boston Marathon.

Heavily armed police will be out in force. Bags will be searched on the MBTA. And the area around Copley Square will remain a crime scene, closed to the public.

Not since the Sept. 11 attacks has Boston witnessed such a show of martial power coupled with a sense of vulnerability and grief.

UM Coach: Bomb Sniffing Dogs, Spotters on Roofs Before Explosions

Reported by: John Dzenitis
Published: 4/15 3:30 pm
Updated: 4/15 11:07 pm

University of Mobile’s Cross Country Coach, who was near the finish line of the Boston Marathon when a series of explosions went off, said he thought it was odd there were bomb sniffing dogs at the start and finish lines.

"They kept making announcements to the participants do not worry, it's just a training exercise," Coach Ali Stevenson told Local 15.

Stevenson said he saw law enforcement spotters on the roofs at the start of the race. He's been in plenty of marathons in Chicago, D.C., London and other major metropolitan areas but has never seen that level of security before.

By Daily Mail Reporters, Daniel Bates In Dorchester, Massachusetts and Lydia Warren
PUBLISHED: 14:09 EST, 15 April 2013 | UPDATED: 09:21 EST, 16 April 2013

An eight-year-old boy waiting at the finish line to give his father a hug was among three people killed and 173 others injured when two explosions rocked the Boston Marathon in the worst terrorist atrocity since 9/11.

Martin Richard died after the first of two bombs hidden in trash cans were detonated within 12 seconds of each other during the Patriots' Day bank holiday yesterday, sending terrified runners and spectators fleeing for their lives and leaving a scene of 'unspeakable horror'.

Neighbors told MailOnline about the moment his father, Bill Richard, returned home still wearing hospital scrubs on Monday night and looking like the 'walking dead' as he struggled to come to terms with his son's death and injuries suffered by his wife and six-year-old daughter.

Boston police closed off the city as a 'danger zone' as witnesses described seeing body parts flying through the air and shoes that 'still had flesh in them' in an attack that has sent shock waves across the world.

Seventeen of the injured are in a critical condition and CNN reported that at least 10 victims have needed amputations. At least eight of the wounded are thought to be children, including a two-year-old boy who suffered a head injury.

Investigators do not know of a motive for the bombs, nor do they have a specific suspect. But last night detectives raided a Boston home after a man, said to be of Saudi origin, was arrested at the scene for acting suspiciously and taken to hospital, where he was treated for burns and shrapnel wounds.

BOSTON — About 100 feet from the end of the 26.2-mile Boston Marathon, explosions shook the street and sent runners frantically racing for cover. The marathon finish line, normally a festive area of celebration and exhaustion, was suddenly like a war zone.

“These runners just finished and they don’t have legs now,” said Roupen Bastajian, 35, a Rhode Island state trooper and former Marine. “So many of them. There are so many people without legs. It’s all blood. There’s blood everywhere. You got bones, fragments. It’s disgusting.”

(Reuters) - Authorities suspect whoever perpetrated the Boston Marathon bombings carried heavy devices made out of pressure cookers in dark-colored nylon bags or backpacks before dropping them near the finish line, causing the worst attack on U.S. soil since September 11, 2001.

The twin blasts on Monday killed three people including an 8-year-old boy and injured 176 others, some of whom were maimed by bombs packed with ball bearings and nails.

President Barack Obama, who will travel to Boston on Thursday for a memorial service, on Tuesday called the bombings an "act of terror" and police said parts of central Boston could be closed for days.

Other cities across the United States were watchful following the worst attack in the country since the 2001 hijacked plane attacks. Suspicious bags were inspected at Boston Logan International Airport and La Guardia airport in New York.

UPDATE: Boston Marathon Explosions: No Suspects In Custody As FBI, Police Investigate Leads

Boston Bombs May Have Been Pressure Cookers in Backpacks.

This is a breaking news story. Check back for updates.

Update 11 p.m.: Initial evidence on the Boston bombings suggests homegrown terrorism, Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said after the panel was briefed by Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, Bloomberg reports.

“There are a lot of things that are surrounding this that would give an indication it may have been a domestic terrorist,” Chambliss said. Still, he said, officials can’t say for certain.

Bomb Probe Turns to Public With Homegrown Terror Weighed

Someone’s “friend, neighbor or coworker” concealed bombs in two heavy, dark bags and dropped them near the Boston Marathon finish line, authorities said, as an investigation still in its early stages turned to the possibility of a homegrown terrorist.

The FBI-led probe of the April 15 bombing drew a clearer picture yesterday of the devices that killed three people and injured more than 170 others in Boston in order to draw out clues from the public.

FBI Seeks Bombing Suspects, 'Someone Knows Who Did This'

By Jeff Brady

Listen to the Story

In Boston, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies are releasing a few more details about two explosions that killed three people and left dozens of others injured. The FBI says the explosive devices may have included a pressure cooker, filled with things like nails and ball bearings. Investigators believe dark nylon bags or back-packs may have been used. But there's still much authorities don't know — like who planted the devices and why.

BOSTON/WASHINGTON | Wed Apr 17, 2013 7:42pm EDT

BOSTON/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Investigators have spotted a Boston Marathon bombing suspect from security video taken before two blasts ripped through central Boston on Monday, a law enforcement source said on Wednesday, in what is potentially the biggest break in the case yet.

No arrests had been made, and the suspect in the video had not been identified by name, two government officials said. Police may make an appeal to the public for more information at a news conference scheduled for later on Wednesday, a government source said.

The explosions at the Boston Marathon finish line killed three people and injured 176 others in the worst attack on U.S. soil since September 11, 2001.

FBI cancels press conference amid conflicting reports

Wednesday, April 17, 2013

(VIDEO)

Surveillance video from the Lord & Taylor store on Boylston Street is proving to be a vital break in the Marathon bombing case, but the FBI has canceled a press conference in a day riddled with conflicting reports about a suspect caught on camera but no arrest announced.

In another twist, City Council President Stephen Murphy told the Associated Press tonight that police "may be on the verge of arresting someone and that's good." But he backed off his statement to the AP, saying he "has not been briefed" and that his comments were based on media reports.

Feds deny reports of Boston suspect is arrested

Associated Press
7:28 PM 04/17/2013

BOSTON (AP) — In what could be a major break in the Boston Marathon case, investigators are on the hunt for a man seen in a department-store surveillance video dropping off a bag at the site of the bombings, a Boston politician said Wednesday.

Separately, a law enforcement official confirmed that authorities have found an image of a potential suspect but don’t know his name.

The development — less than 48 hours after the attack that left three people dead and more than 170 wounded — marked a possible turning point in a case that has investigators analyzing photos and videos frame by frame for clues to who carried out the twin bombings and why.

FBI releases photos of two men considered suspects in marathon bombing

By Jason Sickles
April 18, 2013

[Updated at 7:10 p.m. ET]

The FBI intensified its manhunt in the Boston Marathon bombing case on Thursday by releasing images of two men they deem to be suspects. It asked that anyone with information about the men or who may have seen them in the vicinity of the marathon finish line on Monday to step forward with information as soon as possible.

At a late-afternoon news conference here, FBI Special Agent Richard Deslauriers released surveillance tape and displayed photos of two young men captured in the moments before before the twin explosions that killed 3 and injured 170.

"Somebody out there knows these individuals as friends, neighbors, co-workers or family members," Deslauriers said. “Though it may be difficult, the nation is counting on those with information to come forward and provide it to us."

I watched part of the trial on HLN and I think it was Vinnie who said the two guys with backpacks were no longer suspects in the bombings. I don't know if they have talked with LE or why they have decided this. This may just be another case of the media jumping the gun before they get actual info.

FBI releases photos, video of Boston bomb suspects

By Matt Smith and Thom Patterson, CNN
updated 6:22 PM EDT, Thu April 18, 2013

1 of 10 - The FBI on Thursday, April 18, released photos and video of two men it called suspects in the deadly bombings at the Boston Marathon and pleaded for public help in identifying them. The two men were photographed walking together near the finish line of the marathon before the explosions that killed three people and wounded about 180.

(CNN) -- The FBI on Thursday released photos and video of two men it called suspects in the deadly bombings at the Boston Marathon and pleaded for public help in identifying them.

~Snipped~

Suspect 1 was seen wearing a light-colored, collarless shirt underneath a dark-colored jacket and wearing a dark baseball cap.

A man in dressed in similar fashion to Suspect 2 -- in a light-colored hooded sweatshirt, a black jacket and a white baseball cap turned backward -- had been identified as a possible suspect in the attack on Wednesday by two sources with knowledge of the investigation. A law enforcement official who was being briefed on the investigation regularly said images showing two men near the marathon finish line were being circulated to state and federal law enforcement agencies Wednesday evening.

But at a congressional hearing earlier Thursday, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano urged caution and pledged the investigation was "proceeding apace."

"There is some video that has raised the question of those that the FBI would like to speak with," she said. "I wouldn't characterize them as suspects under the technical term."

Hi sitemama,

I haven't find any information confirming that the "two suspects" in the pictures, and a video that was released today, were cleared by the FBI. There might be some kind of confusion with the cover story that was published yesterday by the New York Post.

Boston Marathon bomber manhunt: One suspect dead, second on the run

By Jason Sickles and Liz Goodwin
April 19, 2013 - 11 mins ago..

[Updated at 9 a.m. ET]

BOSTON—A late-night police chase and shootout has left one marathon bombing suspect dead and another on the run, police here said, as residents of the still-grieving city were ordered by officials to "shelter in place" while the manhunt continues. One police officer was killed and another was seriously wounded during the violent spree.

The Associated Press identified the surviving Boston bomb suspect as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, of Cambridge, Mass., and said that the suspects were brothers. The second bombing suspect is Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, according to NBC News, who was found with an IED on his body. The brothers are of Chechen origin, according to NBC, a volatile southern Russian republic....

The stories of 2 brothers suspected in bombing

By JEFF DONN and JOCELYN NOVECK | Associated Press
April 19, 2013 - 9 mins ago..

BOSTON (AP) — In May of 2011, Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, then a senior at a prestigious high school, was awarded a $2,500 scholarship from the city of Cambridge, Mass., to pursue higher education. Now, Tsarnaev is on the run, described as "armed and dangerous" and suspected of the Boston Marathon bombing.

Two brothers, one now dead, one alive and at large. After hours of only grainy images of two men in baseball caps to go on, a portrait gradually started emerging Friday of the men suspected in the attack.

Police cornered and captured Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Friday night.

Boston Police arrested the 19-year-old at about 8:45 p.m., after finding him holed up in a boat stored in the backyard of a Watertown residence. He was led to an ambulance and driven away from the scene.

Tsarnaev's capture came two hours after Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick ended a Boston-area lockdown after a massive, day-long search of suburban Watertown, which seemingly failed to flush out the teenager. Dozens of bystanders cheered and applauded and police left the scene.

'CAPTURED!!!' Boston police announce Marathon bombing suspect in custody

By Chelsea J. Carter and Greg Botelho , CNN
updated 10:31 PM EDT, Fri April 19, 2013

(CNN) -- The second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings was taken into custody Friday night, bringing to an end a massive manhunt in the tense Massachusetts capital worried by warnings the man was possibly armed with explosives.

After announcing the arrest on Twitter, Boston police tweeted: "CAPTURED!!! The hunt is over. The search is done. The terror is over. And justice has won. Suspect in custody."

Authorities confirmed the man in custody is 19-year-old Dzhokar Tsarnaev, who escaped an overnight shootout with police that left his older brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev -- the other man wanted in the bombings -- dead.

The younger Tsarnaev was in serious condition at an area hospital, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said at a news conference.

Tsarnaev was cornered late Friday as he was hiding on a boat in a backyard of Watertown, a suburb of Boston.

'We got him!': Boston bombing suspect captured alive

Residents who have been holed up in their homes, media and law enforcement officials who have been engaged in a day-long manhunt for the at-large suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing let out a cheers after it was confirmed that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev had been apprehended.

By Pete Williams, Richard Esposito, Michael Isikoff and Tracy Connor, NBC News

~Snipped~

Cops cheered as the suspect was taken into custody in Watertown, Mass., just before 9 p.m. Later, the people of Watertown flooded the streets, cheering every passing police car and armored vehicle in an impromptu parade. Chants of "USA! USA!" broke out. In Boston, people danced in the streets outside Fenway Park.

Police cornered Tsarnaev -- a naturalized U.S. citizen of Chechen origin -- around 7 p.m., less than an hour after police lifted a stay-indoors order for the city and its suburbs.

A resident had gone outside to smoke and noticed a tarp on the boat was flapping, a relative told NBC News. When he went to investigate, he saw what looked like a curled-up person and bloody clothes.

The man "freaked out," ran into the house and called police, the relative said.

Thermal imaging from helicopters confirmed there was a person in the boat, officials said.

Just before 9 p.m., the wounded Tsarnaev was taken into custody. "He sustained significant blood loss," a law enforcement official at the scene said.

As an ambulance took the suspect to Boston Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital -- where he was in serious condition -- people lining the streets applauded in joy and relief.
