THE FBI is questioning the widow of dead Boston bomber suspect Tamerlan Tsarneav, who thought he was at home minding their toddler.

Sources told ABC News.com in the US that FBI agents were at a Rhode Island home where Katherine Russell is staying with her parents.

The young family lived in a Cambridge apartment that had been leased more than 10 years ago by Tsarnaev's parents.

Russell worked 70 to 80 hours, seven days a week as a home health-care aide, her lawyer, Amato DeLuca, told reporters, and she thought her husband was caring for their toddler at home while she was at work.

No international terror groups involved: suspect

ninemsn staff 12:01pm April 23, 2013

(VIDEO)

The surviving suspect in last week's Boston Marathon bombings has said no international terror groups were involved in the attack, a US government official told CNN.

In hospital today, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev told investigators that older brother Tamerlan was the mastermind behind the deadly blasts which the pair carried out in an effort to defend Islam from attack.

The government source said preliminary interviews with the 19-year-old younger suspect suggested the pair were self-radicalised jihadists.

Bomb Suspect Calm as First Blast Ripped Apart Boston Marathon

By Janelle Lawrence, David McLaughlin and Mike Dorning

April 23, 2013

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev stood for four minutes with a bomb-laden backpack at his feet and only glanced in the direction of the first explosion at the Boston Marathon.

While the crowd around him was seized with alarm and bewilderment, Tsarnaev calmly but rapidly began moving away from his knapsack. Ten seconds later, it exploded, driving nails and BB pellets into spectators near the storied race’s finish line.

That description of the deadly moments that rocked a city and a nation, based on video collected by investigators, is part of a federal complaint filed yesterday accusing Tsarnaev, 19, of executing the April 15 bombings with his older brother.

Boston bombing suspect cites U.S. wars as motivation, officials say

By Scott Wilson, Greg Miller and Sari Horwitz, Apr 23, 2013 09:22 PM EDT

The 19-year-old suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings has told interrogators that the American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan motivated him and his brother to carry out the attack, according to U.S. officials familiar with the interviews.

From his hospital bed, where he is now listed in fair condition, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has acknowledged his role in planting the explosives near the marathon finish line on April 15, the officials said. The first successful large-scale bombing in the post-Sept. 11, 2001, era, the Boston attack killed three people and wounded more than 250 others.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe an ongoing investigation, said Dzhokhar and his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed by police as the two attempted to avoid capture, do not appear to have been directed by a foreign terrorist organization.

Watertown boat owner David Henneberry tells story of finding Boston Marathon suspect

Henneberry calls himself an 'incidental hero' in finding Dzhokhar Tsarnaev

UPDATED 6:30 PM EDT Apr 23, 2013

(VIDEO)

The Watertown man, who found Boston Marathon bomb suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev hiding in a boat in his backyard ending a week of terror for the region, told NewsCenter 5's Ed Harding exclusively that his one hope is to bring closure to the families of those killed and those who were wounded.

View Part 2 of boat owner interview

"I'm just glad," Henneberry said as he struggled to control his emotions. "I hate to use clichés. If people who were killed can get some (comfort), then I am at peace with it. If I help these people that lost people, if I can help them in their mind, then everything is good with me here."

Henneberry's first-person account of his discovery of Tsarnaev, 19, differs in one important way from that told by law enforcement the night of the arrest.

It was a discovery driven by his obsession with, of all things, the shrink wrap on the boat he calls his "baby," the Slip Away II

Katherine Russell Tsarnaev: From All-American Girl to Bomber's Wife

By STEVE HELLING

Katherine Russell was a typical college student before she met Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

The daughter of an emergency room doctor, Katie, as she was called, grew up in a Christian household in North Kingstown, R.I., graduated at the top of her class at her high school in 2007, and said in her yearbook she wanted to go into the Peace Corps.

Katie Russell, 24, now going by Katherine Tsarnaev, and her young daughter have retreated to Katherine's childhood home. She has not yet spoken with federal authorities, who want to question her about her husband's activities. But Tuesday she released a statement through her lawyers.

"The injuries and loss of life – to people who came to celebrate a race and a holiday – has caused profound distress and sorrow to Katie and her family. The reports of involvement by her husband and brother-in-law came as an absolute shock to them all," the statement read.

BOSTON -- The accused marathon bomber told FBI interrogators that he and his brother had decided to bomb the race about a week before the deadly attack, according to a federal law enforcement source.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, said that he and his brother, Tamerlan, 26, carried out the April 15 bombings to avenge perceived slights against Islam and because of America's wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the source said.

Investigators continued Tuesday to piece together the brothers' lives and how far back the planning went. They learned that Tamerlan Tsarnaev in February purchased two reloadable mortar kits from a Phantom Fireworks shop in Seabrook, N.H., a company spokesman confirmed. Authorities have not said how the bombs were detonated and were investigating whether the mortar kits played a role.

Widow: Russell, the wife of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, leaves her family home with her lawyer Tuesday morning

Katherine Russell, the widow of suspected Boston bomber Tamerlan Tsraneav, has a criminal record and is a confessed shoplifter, MailOnline can reveal.

A police report obtained by MailOnline reveals that the 25-year-old Islamic convert was arrested in 2007 for stealing $67 worth of clothing from an Old Navy store in Warwick, Rhode Island.

And in an intriguing twist, Russell, who was 18 at the time, told officers she was married though she was living at parent’s North Kingstown home and did not meet Tsranaev until some two years later.

The startling revelation of this tawdry incident raises fresh questions over the past and character of the 'all-American girl' 'brainwashed' according to some, by her fanatic husband.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev reportedly on state welfare while delving into radical Islam

Published April 24, 2013 / FoxNews.com

(VIDEO)

One of the men behind last week's deadly attack on the Boston Marathon had received Massachusetts welfare benefits until recently -- during the same period that the alienation he apparently felt as a Chechen in America coincided with a growing embrace of radical Islam.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, and his family were living on taxpayer-funded state welfare benefits as recently as last year, the Boston Herald reports, though it remains unclear what kind of benefits they were receiving.

State officials confirmed to the newspaper late Tuesday that Tsarnaev, who was killed during a gun battle with police on Friday, was receiving benefits along with his wife, Katherine Russell Tsarnaev, and their 3-year-old daughter.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is telling authorities he and his brother, Tamerlan, learned how to make bombs from Al Qaeda's online magazine, which recommends using fireworks. Officials say Tamerlan bought fireworks in New Hampshire before the bombing. NBC's Jeff Rossen reports.

The brothers suspected in the Boston Marathon bombings may have been headed for New York to party after the attack, the New York police commissioner said Wednesday.

“There was some information that they may have been intent on coming to New York, but not to continue doing what they’re doing,” Kelly told reporters at police headquarters. “The information that we received said something about a party, or having a party.”

The mother of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects could be jailed if she returns to the U.S. to see her hospitalized son, it has been revealed.

Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, who now lives in Dagestan, Russia, is the mother of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who police say detonated two pressure cooker bombs near the finish line of the race, which killed three people and injured more than 200 others.

(CNN) -- What's clear: Katherine Russell claims she was completely in the dark about her husband's alleged plan to bomb the Boston Marathon on April 15.

What's unclear: How could she not know?

Russell and Tamerlan Tsarnaev were married on June 21, 2010. She was raised in a Christian household in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, but converted to Islam after meeting her husband while attending Suffolk University.

She worked as a home health aide and would often leave their toddler daughter with her husband while she went to work.

Boston bomb suspect admits brother recruited him, then goes silent after Miranda warning

Published April 25, 2013

BOSTON – Sixteen hours after investigators began interrogating him, the surviving suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings went silent: he'd just been read his constitutional rights.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev immediately stopped talking after a magistrate judge and a representative from the U.S. Attorney's office entered his hospital room and gave him his Miranda warning, according to four officials of both political parties briefed on the interrogation. They insisted on anonymity because the briefing was private.

Fundraising campaigns for victims of the Boston Marathon bombings have raised more than $26 million and the donations continue to grow.

More than 50,000 people and roughly 60 corporate donors have pledged more than $23.8 million to The One Fund Boston, which was set up by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Tom Menino.

"Within an hour, I had calls from business leaders and local philanthropists who, like me, were heartbroken by the impact this hideous tragedy has had on individuals, their families and friends," Menino said in a statement. "And they want to do everything they can to help these people physically and psychologically in the future."

Published: Friday, April 26, 2013
By The Associated Press

BOSTON — The surviving Boston Marathon bombings suspect has been released from a civilian hospital and transferred to a federal medical detention center in central Massachusetts.

The U.S. Marshals Service said Friday that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev left Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center overnight and was taken to the Federal Medical Center Devens about 40 miles west of Boston.

The facility, on the decommissioned Fort Devens U.S. Army base, treats federal prisoners and detainees who require specialized long-term medical or mental health care.

BOSTON (Reuters) - The surviving suspect in last week's Boston Marathon bombing was moved to a prison medical center outside Boston on Friday, while the body of his older brother who died in a shootout with police remained unclaimed, officials said.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, a 19-year-old ethnic Chechen charged with the bombing that killed three people and wounded 264, was moved from the hospital where he was kept under guard since he was arrested, badly wounded, a week ago, the U.S. Marshals Service said.

New details emerged on Friday about Dzhokhar and older brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev's movements the evening of April 18 after authorities identified the pair publicly in photos as the suspects in the bombing attack.

Lawyer: Jailed pair shocked by Boston bomb claims

By DAVID B. CARUSO and MICHAEL KUNZELMAN | Associated Press – 20 hours ago.

Associated Press/VK - This undated photo added on April 18, 2013 to the VK page of Dias Kadyrbayev shows, from left, Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayev, from Kazakhstan, with Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in Times Square in New York. Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov, two college buddies of Tsarnaev, were jailed by immigration authorities the day after Tsarnaev's capture. They are not suspects, but are being held for violating their student visas by not regularly attending classes, Kadyrbayev’s lawyer, Robert Stahl said. They are being detained at a county jail in Boston. (AP Photo/VK)

BOSTON (AP) — Two college friends of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev who were jailed by immigration authorities the day after his capture had nothing to do with the deadly attack and had seen no hints that he harbored any violent thoughts or terrorist sympathies, a lawyer for one of them said Friday.

Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayev, who are from Kazakhstan, were classmates with Tsarnaev at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. They appeared alongside him in a recent photograph of a group of young men visiting New York City's Times Square. They were detained April 20 after being questioned in connection with the bombing, which had killed three people and injured more than 260 others a few days earlier.

Feds Search Landfill for Boston Suspect's Laptop (Video)

By BRIAN ROSS (@brianross) , MEGAN CHUCHMACH (@megcourtney) , RHONDA SCHWARTZ and MATTHEW MOSK (@mattmosk)
April 26, 2013

Investigators in white hazmat suits are searching a landfill for a laptop tied to the accused Boston Marathon bombers, a potential lead that emerged as a result of interviews with two men from Kazakhstan who knew the terror suspects, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

Immigration officers arrested the two men, Dias Kadyrbayev, 19, and Azamat Tazhayakov, 20, on Saturday on suspicion that they had violated the terms of their student visas because they were no longer attending classes. They are being detained on the administrative charges at the Suffolk County (Mass.) House of Corrections.

The men lived in an apartment near the campus of University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where accused bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, had been enrolled as a student. Both Tsarnaev brothers were believed to have visited the New Bedford apartment of Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov after the bombing, according to three law enforcement sources, who spoke on the condition they not be named because they were discussing an ongoing investigation. The police sources told ABC News they traced calls and Russian language text messages from one of the bombing suspect's cell phone to the Kazakhstani men.

Boston suspects' mum was on terror list

12:05pm April 27, 2013

(VIDEO)

The mother of the Boston bombing suspects was put on a government terrorism database 18 months before the bombings, two US intelligence officials say.

She has called it "lies and hypocrisy" and said she has never been linked to crimes or terrorism.

The CIA asked for the older suspect, now dead, and his mother to be added to a terrorist database in 2011, after the Russian government contacted the agency with concerns that both had become religious militants, according to officials briefed on the investigation.

About six months earlier, the FBI investigated Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, also at Russia's request, one of the officials told the Associated Press. The FBI found no ties to terrorism.

APNewsBreak: Russia caught bomb suspect on wiretap

By EILEEN SULLIVAN and MATT APUZZO | Associated Press – 2 hrs 26 mins ago.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Russian authorities secretly recorded a telephone conversation in 2011 in which one of the Boston bombing suspects vaguely discussed jihad with his mother, officials said Saturday, days after the U.S. government finally received details about the call.

In another conversation, the mother of now-dead bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was recorded talking to someone in southern Russia who is under FBI investigation in an unrelated case, officials said.

The conversations are significant because, had they been revealed earlier, they might have been enough evidence for the FBI to initiate a more thorough investigation of the Tsarnaev family.

(Reuters) - Investigators have removed from its Watertown, Massachusetts, backyard the now-famous boat used as a hiding spot by one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects, and have taken it to an evidence storage facility, the FBI said on Saturday.

The boat was the scene of high drama when Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, a 19-year-old ethnic Chechen charged with the April 15 bombing that killed three people and wounded 264, was captured by authorities on April 19 after a tense day of searching in the Boston area.

The boat was processed for evidence at the scene and then moved on Friday to an undisclosed FBI facility for storage, said FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller.

BOSTON – With the Boston marathon bombing suspect in a prison hospital, investigators are pushing forward in the U.S. and abroad to piece together the myriad details of a plot that killed three people and injured more than 260.

FBI agents have wrapped up a two-day search at a landfill near the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where 19-year-old suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was a sophomore. FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller wouldn't say what investigators were looking for or whether they recovered anything from the landfill before the search ended Friday.

A federal law enforcement official not authorized to speak on the record about the investigation told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity on Friday that the FBI was gathering evidence regarding "everything imaginable."

No Sign 'Misha' Tied To Boston Bombing: Officials

By MATT APUZZO
Associated Press / April 27, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say investigators have found no evidence that a conservative Muslim friend of Tamerlan Tsarnaev had any connection to the Boston Marathon bombing.

Tsarnaev is one of two suspects in the bombing. He died in a shootout with police.

Family members have said he grew up religiously apathetic but hardened his Islamic views in 2008 or 2009 under the influence of a Muslim convert, known to the family as Misha.

Lawmaker Believes Boston Suspects Were Trained

By Associated Press / April 28, 2013

(WASHINGTON) — The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee says he believes the Boston Marathon bombing suspects had some training in carrying out their attack.

Rep. Michael McCaul is citing the type of device used in the attack — shrapnel-packed pressure-cooker bombs — and the weapons’ sophistication as signs of training.

Homemade bombs built from pressure cookers have been a frequent weapon of militants in Afghanistan, India and Pakistan. Al-Qaida’s branch in Yemen once published an online manual on how to make one.

By ARSEN MOLLAYEV Associated Press
MAKHACHKALA, Russia April 28, 2013 (AP)

The father of the two Boston bombing suspects says he is postponing a trip to the United States because of poor health.

Anzor Tsarnaev told The Associated Press on Sunday that he is "really sick" and his blood pressure had spiked.

Tsarnaev said last week that he planned to travel from Russia to the U.S. with the hope of seeing his younger son, who is under arrest, and burying his elder son, who was killed in a clash with police.

Boston bombings: Is Misha a red herring?

By Peter Weber | The Week – April 29, 2013, 3 hrs ago

The New York Review of Books says it has found the mysterious Misha. Mikhail Allakhverdov says he's no Svengali

When Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev's family members started mentioning a mysterious man named Misha, and suggested he was a driving force behind Tamerlan's descent into radical, violent Islam, it didn't seem like it should be too hard to find the man: How many balding, red-bearded Armenian Muslim converts live in the Boston area?

I Would Have Stopped Him, 'Misha' Says Of Bombing Suspect

by MARK MEMMOTT
April 29, 2013 8:00 AM

The man known as Misha who relatives of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects have alleged may have turned the elder Tsarnaev brother toward a radical form of Islam says he did no such thing and would have tried to stop the attack if he had known about it.

"I wasn't his teacher," Mikhail Allakhverdov (Misha) said Sunday of Tamerlan Tsarnaev. "If I had been his teacher, I would have made sure he never did anything like this."

Mother of bomb suspects insists sons are innocent

MONDAY APR 29, 2013 | DAVID CARUSO FOR THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Angry bomb suspects' mother says sons are innocent; says she's tired of made up 'nonsense'

BOSTON (AP) — The angry and grieving mother of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects insists that her sons are innocent and that she's no terrorist.

But Zubeidat Tsarnaeva is drawing increased attention after federal officials say Russian authorities intercepted her phone calls, including one in which she vaguely discussed jihad with her elder son. In another, she was recorded talking to someone in southern Russia who is under FBI investigation in an unrelated case, U.S. officials said.

In photos of her as a younger woman, Tsarnaeva wears a low-cut blouse and has her hair teased like a 1980s rock star. After she arrived in the U.S. from Russia in 2002, she went to beauty school and did facials at a suburban day spa.

Boston bomb suspect held in 10-by-10 cell

April 29, 2013, 4 hours ago
by WGN Web Desk

Less than two weeks after he partied with classmates in a college dorm, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev now lives in drastically different surroundings.

The 19-year-old Boston Marathon bombing suspect is locked inside a 10-by-10-foot cell with a steel door, a slot for food and an observation window, a prison spokesman said Sunday.

Tsarnaev is able to speak and has been interacting with staff at the Federal Medical Center Devens, spokesman John Colautti said.

Medical professionals at the prison medical facility, which currently houses 1,044 inmates, are making regular rounds to check on Tsarnaev, Colautti said, and Tsarnaev has spoken with staff there about managing his health.

Boston suspect's defense team gets major boost

BOSTON (AP) — The defense team representing the Boston Marathon bombing suspect got a major boost Monday with the addition of Judy Clarke, a San Diego lawyer who has managed to get life sentences instead of the death penalty for several high-profile clients, including the Unabomber and the gunman in the rampage that injured former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Clarke's appointment was approved Monday by U.S. Magistrate Judge Marianne Bowler.

Bowler denied, at least for now, a request from Miriam Conrad, the public defender of 19-year-old suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, to appoint a second death penalty lawyer — David Bruck, a professor at Washington and Lee University School of Law.

Boston probe eyes slain Canadian jihadist, source says

By Josh Levs and Ben Brumfield, CNN
updated 8:11 PM EDT, Mon April 29, 2013

CNN) -- Federal agents are looking into possible links between dead Boston Marathon bomb suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev and a Canadian boxer-turned-jihadist killed by Russian troops in 2012, a source being briefed on the investigation said Monday.

William Plotnikov and six others died in a firefight with Russian forces in the southwestern republic of Dagestan in July 2012, while Tsarnaev was visiting the region, the source said. The 23-year-old Plotnikov had been born in Russia, but his family moved to Canada when he was a teenager.

The source said Plotnikov's body was prepared for burial by a local imam on July 14. Tamerlan Tsarnaev flew out of Dagestan two days later, arriving in New York on July 17. Investigators are looking into the possibility he left because of Plotnikov's death, the source said.

FBI agents visited the widow of suspected Boston bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev at her family’s home in North Kingstown, R.I., today.

Authorities have reportedly been interested in talking to Katherine Russell, who married Tsarnaev three years ago, to find out what she knows about the plot to bomb the Boston Marathon on April 15.

Her attorneys could not be reached today. But they previously issued a statement saying that Russell was “doing everything she can to assist with the investigation” and was struggling to come to terms with the bombing and her husband’s death.

No one has yet claimed Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s body, which is in the custody of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, said Department of Public Safety spokesman Terrel Harris. The examiner has determined a cause of death, but won’t release the information until the body has been claimed, Harris said.

Investigators Obtain DNA From Widow of Bombing Suspect

Federal authorities are closely scrutinizing the activities of the wife of the dead Boston Marathon bombing suspect in the days before and after the attacks.

The authorities are looking at a range of possibilities, two senior law enforcement officials said, including that she could have — wittingly or unwittingly — destroyed evidence, helped the bombers evade capture or even played a role in planning the attacks. As part of the investigation, F.B.I. agents are trying to determine whether female DNA found on a piece of a pressure cooker used as an explosive device in the attacks was from Katherine Russell, the wife of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the officials said.

One of the officials said that a fingerprint had also been found on a bomb fragment and that investigators had tried to collect DNA and fingerprint samples from several people whom the authorities are scrutinizing in addition to Ms. Russell.
