LOS ANGELES | Sun Aug 4, 2013 7:06pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A California man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a driver plowed his car into pedestrians on the popular Venice Beach boardwalk, killing an Italian woman on her honeymoon and injuring 11 other people, police said on Sunday.

Witnesses said it appeared the car's driver had been aiming for pedestrians on Saturday while driving down the popular oceanside walkway at speeds up to 20 miles per hour while people screamed and scrambled to get out of the way.

"Bodies were flying in the air and people were screaming. It was absolute mayhem," eyewitness Dave Blackburn told KABC-TV.

Driver “Out for Blood” Plows Through Los Angeles Boardwalk, Killing 1 and Injuring 11

By Daniel Politi | Posted Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013, at 10:52 AM

A driver turned a summer evening on one of California’s most popular boardwalks into a horrific scene as he drove his car car straight into a crowd, killing one person, and injuring 11. Witnesses claim the driver appeared to have full control over his car and was purposefully trying to hit people during the hit-and-run that went on for several blocks. “The driver was out for blood,” one witness told a local CBS affiliate. The driver fled the scene but police are questioning a man who turned himself in after the incident. (Update: Police arrested Nathan Louis Campbell, 38, who walked into a police station two hours after the incident saying he was involved, reports the Associated Press. The motive remains unclear.)

Hit-and-run driver accelerated onto LA boardwalk

Updated at 09:10 PM today

TAMI ABDOLLAH Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) - August 4, 2013 (WPVI) -- The driver parked outside a hotel and surveyed the leisurely summer scene at the Venice Beach boardwalk: Hundreds of people were sitting at cafes, walking along the seashore or shopping at vendors selling jewelry or art.

Then, according to surveillance video, the man got into a large black car, steered around a vehicle barrier and accelerated mercilessly through the crowd, hitting one person after another as bystanders tried desperately to get out of the way.

A couple of hours later, authorities arrested a man on suspicion of murder after he walked into a police station in neighboring Santa Monica and said he was involved.

Nathan Louis Campbell, 38, of Los Angeles, remained jailed Sunday on $1 million bail.

Police declined to discuss a motive but Deputy Chief Kirk Albanese said there was no indication that the attack was a terrorist act or that anyone else was involved.

By the time it was over, the driver had covered about a quarter of a mile along the boardwalk before fleeing. The entire incident was over in minutes.

Man Arrested, Booked for Murder in Boardwalk Crash

Nathan Louis Campbell Turned Himself In Hours After Deadly Incident

U.S. NEWS | Updated August 4, 2013, 5:37 p.m. ET

~Snipped~

LAPD Sgt. Daniel Gonzalez, who was one of the first responders to the scene, said he found "multiple victims everywhere," and that he imagines it was "something similar to the scene of the Boston bombing."

Sgt. Gonzalez said police believe Mr. Campbell was acting intentionally, but they haven't determined a motive.

"He purposefully drove down that boardwalk…and drove at a high rate of speed," Sgt. Gonzalez said. "What the heck was his motivation? It was as crowded as any day out there."

Police declined to say if they tested Mr. Campbell for alcohol or drugs. They recovered the vehicle used in the crime, a dark-blue Dodge Avenger. Police don't believe the car was stolen.

Venice boardwalk suspect was familiar sight at Malibu day-labor center

By Kelly Goff, Staff Writer

A contradictory picture has emerged of Nathan Louis Campbell, the man accused of mowing down pedestrians on the Venice boardwalk Saturday, with stunned friends saying his demeanor and history gave no indication of a violent personality.

Despite numerous run-ins with police going back a decade, many who know the 38-year-old Campbell describe him as a nice, helpful guy, who never seemed prone to violence. He has struggled with alcohol use, friends said, but had tried to clean up his life in recent years and was even working as the intake coordinator for a Denver-area rehabilitation center until June.

Just hours before driving his blue 2008 Dodge Avenger to the boardwalk, Campbell was 15 miles up the coast looking for work, sitting with friends at the Malibu Community Labor Exchange, a nonprofit that pairs day laborers with employers. The organization operates out of a small trailer office in a parking lot adjacent to the Malibu Courthouse.

Nathan Louis Campbell: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Published:1:32 pm EDT, August 5, 2013| Updated:5:12 pm EDT, August 6, 2013

Nathan Louis Campbell, 38, is the alleged driver behind the shocking vehicular rampage in Venice Beach that dominated headlines over the weekend.

Campbell turned himself in to police in Santa Monica, California, telling them "I think you have been looking for me." He is being held on a $1 million bail after he admitted driving the car that killed 32-year-old honeymooner Alice Gruppioni as well as injuring 11 others, reports NBC Los Angeles.

At around 6 p.m. on August 4, it's alleged that Campbell deliberately drove his Dodge Avenger onto the boardwalk, aiming to hit people.

Here's what you need to know...

1. Campbell Had Been Known to Police

According to NBC Los Angeles, Campbell was "known" to police in the area. He's referred to as a resident of Los Angeles, but the Dodge Avenger that was used in the incident had Colorado paper plates. The L.A.-based station goes on to report that a man with Campbell's name and date of birth was arrested in 2002 for being drunk and disorderly. The Sacramento Bee reports that Campbell spent time in jail for shoplifting. The Bee says:

Campbell was sentenced to five days in jail after pleading guilty to shoplifting at a Denver Pavilions in February 2009. Five months later, he was accused of trespassing at an outdoor mall in Denver and sentenced to 10 days in jail, the records show.

Campbell lived in Colorado at least as recently as last year. He was evicted from his apartment in Denver for not paying $655 in rent in March 2012, records show.

California authorities said no one with his name and birth date had a state driver's license.

The crime he committed in 2009 is believed to have been an attempt to steal headphones from a Virgin Megastore by stuffing them down his pants.

The Los Angeles Times reports that in 2008, Campbell was cited for reckless driving while under the influence in Panama City, Florida.

NBC News reports that in 2009, Campbell was arrested for trespassing in Colorado for refusing to leave a movie theater.

CBS Los Angeles adds that in May 2012 was arrested for public drunkenness in Santa Monica, California.

Nathan Louis Campbell Is Depressed, Crash Was 'Horrible Accident,' Says Lawyer

By MICHAEL R. BLOOD and SARAH PARVINI 08/07/13 03:17 AM ET EDT

(AP Photo/Nick Ut)

LOS ANGELES -- A Colorado man was left "profoundly depressed" after he drove his car into the weekend masses at the Venice Beach boardwalk, killing a woman and injuring 16 people, said his lawyer, who called it "a horrible accident."

"I don't believe he intentionally tried to hit anybody," said public defender Philip Dube, who is representing Nathan Louis Campbell, 38. "He's profoundly sad, he is profoundly depressed, that he has potentially ended somebody's life."

Campbell pleaded not guilty Tuesday to one count of murder, 16 counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and 17 counts of hit-and-run.

A felony complaint said Campbell acted willfully, but it provided no explanation for why he allegedly maneuvered around a vehicle barrier early Saturday evening and plowed into tourists and vendors on the popular walkway along the Pacific.

As trial winds down, jurors reminded of life lost on Venice boardwalk

The image projected in the courtroom showed Alice Gruppioni, an Italian newlywed on her honeymoon in California, smiling in a photograph taken by her husband..

As jurors turned their heads and craned their necks for a glimpse, a second photo, taken that same day, flashed onto the screen.

The photograph showed Gruppioni's lifeless body sprawled on the concrete moments after Nathan Louis Campbell bulldozed his car into pedestrians on the Venice boardwalk, killing her and injuring 17 others, Deputy Dist. Atty. Victor Avila told jurors Monday.

After she was struck by Campbell's car, Gruppioni was carried on the hood for 300 feet before sliding off as he drove down the walkway, Avila told jurors.

"He doesn't stop, he never applies the brakes, and he kills her," he said, pointing at the photo. "There is no coming back for Alice Gruppioni."

Campbell sat expressionless, resting his forearms on the table, as Avila asked the jury to convict him in Gruppioni's death and the injuries of others. Campbell, 39, has pleaded not guilty to murder, assault with a deadly weapon and hit-and-run charges.

Guilty: Nathan Louis Campbell Convicted For Venice Boardwalk Rampage

June 5, 2015 Yo Venice Staff

Nathan Louis Campbell.

A Colorado man who drove his car on the crowded Venice boardwalk, striking several pedestrians and killing an Italian woman on her honeymoon, was convicted today of second-degree murder and other charges.

Nathan Louis Campbell’s attorney conceded during the trial that his 39- year-old client was driving the 2008 blue Dodge Avenger that barreled down the boardwalk on Aug. 3, 2013, but said Campbell was actually doing everything he could to avoid striking pedestrians.

In addition to the murder count, Campbell was also convicted of 17 counts of assault with a deadly weapon and 10 counts of leaving the scene of an accident.

Jurors deliberated about three days before reaching their verdict.

The verdict came shortly after the prosecution decided to try to “assist the jury to render a decision on second-degree murder” by removing an allegation of premeditation and deliberation, according to Deputy District Attorney Victor Avila.

Campbell is due back before Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Kathryn Solorzano for sentencing Aug. 5. He is facing a potential life prison term.
