Pistorius Is Dropped by Ossur as Blade Manufacturer Severs Ties

By Omar R. Valdimarsson  Mar 14, 2014 6:01 PM CT

Ossur hf, the Icelandic company that manufactures the blades used by Oscar Pistorius, has ended its advertising contract with the paralympian as he is tried for the murder of his girlfriend.

“It’s up to the courts of South Africa to rule in this matter,” Sveinn Solvason, Ossur’s chief financial officer, said yesterday by phone. “We, as Ossur, don’t have any official stand in this matter on whether the man is innocent or guilty. But we’re no longer sponsoring Oscar Pistorius.”

~Snipped~

The charges have wrecked Pistorius’s career, and cost him sponsorship deals with Nike Inc. and Luxottica Group SpA’s Oakley. Ossur’s main office in the Icelandic capital has also removed all images of Pistorius that once adorned its walls.

Oscar Pistorius Trial Day 9: Photographic tour provides first glimpse inside Blade Runner's home

Excerpt:

"Is everything as you found it?" prosecutor Gerrie Nel asked repeatedly asked van Rensburg.

"Yes, yes," van Rensburg confirmed.

The journey continues, following the tiny red drops, slowly, inexorably, towards Pistorius' bedroom doors. There's a close-up of a perfect round hole and scrapes in the wood of the bedroom door, next to a matte-black air rifle leaning next to a blue-metal baseball bat."

The trial next door: Oscar Pistorius gets the headlines, but what about Thato Kutumela?

Two model girlfriends left dead, yet public attitudes and media attention to these crimes could not be more different

Tom Peck  Pretoria  Sunday 16 March 2014

~Snipped~

Like Pistorius, Kutumela, 28, used to have a model girlfriend, until the morning of 21 April, 2011, when he raped her, strangled her, covered her naked body with a blanket, put on his Woolworths uniform and went to work. Kutumela has already been found guilty. Pistorius has not, and denies the charges against him.

In Kutumela's case, the court is merely hearing a mitigation of sentence hearing – extraordinary circumstances aimed at reducing his time in jail.

~Snipped~

But now that the ANC Women's League has become a ubiquitous presence at Pistorius's trial, the convenience of having Kutumela's case next door has also been seized upon. In the previous three years, they have paid it little attention.

Why would they? In a country where three women each day are killed in their homes by their partners, Kutumela's crimes are tragically unremarkable, with a moniker for the purposes of statistical analysis: "intimate femicide". It is a relief, even, that he has been successfully prosecuted and will almost certainly be jailed.

Oscar Trial: Gun love and recklessness under the spotlight

South Africa| Monday 17 March 2014 - 11:46am

Oscar Pistorius had a great love and deep enthusiasm for firearms and owned a collection of handguns and rifles.

This was the focus of Monday morning’s evidence led in the North Gauteng High Court where the Paralympian is on trial for killing his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp.

The new witness sworn in on day 11 of the trial was Sean Patrick Rens, a firearms trainer who also handles firearm licensing services. He had been introduced to Oscar Pistorius by motor dealer Justin Divaris who felt Pistorius could be a potential client.

Pistorius was looking for a specific firearm which Rens was able to procure for him – a Smith and Wesson 500 revolver, manufactured in the USA. Over a number of months Pistorius went on to buy “a number of firearms from us”.

According to a list of invoices Rens handed in to court, Pistorius owns several guns. The firearms listed were: a Smith and Wesson 500 revolver; a self-loading semi automatic assault rifle – civilian version of the rifle our military and police use; a pump action shot gun; another rifle with a pistol grip; a Smith and Wesson .38 special revolver and a Mossburg semi automatic shot gun, a slightly different self-loading shot gun. The application for the last firearm was cancelled a month after Pistorius shot Steenkamp dead.

~Snipped~

Rens said he was in charge of the assessment Pistorius would have to undergo in order to purchase and own the firearms he bought.

Rens said Pistorius had produced state-issued competency and license cards as proof of his competency. Pistorius had “a great love and enthusiasm for firearms”, Rens said.

Pistorius had completed the necessary assessment documents while Rens was present on the premises and his instructors would have been present when he did the test.

Nel then went through a number of questions Pistorius had answered during his assessment tests.

Photographs raise new questions in Pistorius trial

Monday 17 March 2014 14:51

Evidence submitted by police photographer, Barend van Staden, to the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has raised new questions around the morning Oscar Pistorius shot and killed Reeva Steenkamp.

Photographs that van Staden had taken show blood splatter on the left side of the bed of Pistorius. The side where the state says Steenkamp slept the night before. The main bedroom door was also damaged on one side.

Van Staden's photographs which are meticulously categorized have brought new evidence to light. The images of the blood splatter are set to suggest there could have been a fight between Pistorius and Steenkamp before the shooting. The source of the blood and the reason for the damaged door are yet to  be established.

12.27 On the break Aislinn Laing, our correspondent in court, sends us this:

Oscar Pistorius, the paralympic athlete accused of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, paid R48,00 (£2,700) for six firearms including a pump-action shotgun and a semi-automatic rifle in an order that was cancelled after the model died, his trial has heard.

He said that the athlete first ordered a Smith & Wesson 500 revolver in June 2012, then followed up with an order for ammunition and several guns including an LM6 semi-automatic, self-loading rifle – the civilian version of the R5 rifle issued to South African police or military; another shotgun; another S&W revolver; a Mossberg semi-auto shotgun and a further a self-loading rifle.

The total cost was R52,500 (£3,000) and the invoice showed the athlete paid R48,500 up front.

Oscar Pistorius 'knew rules' about gun use

17 March 2014 Last updated at 10:44 ET

Reeva Steenkamp's mother, June (in the white jacket), attended the Pretoria trial for a second time.

The Oscar Pistorius trial has heard from a firearm specialist who testified the athlete had good knowledge of the rules on gun use and dealing with intruders.

Mr Pistorius said one could discharge a firearm if one feared for one's life.

Mr Pistorius denies murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last year, saying he mistook her for an intruder.

The prosecution says he intentionally shot Ms Steenkamp after an argument at his house on Valentine's Day 2013.

Oscar washed hands before tests: cop

March 17 2014 at 03:14pm
By Shain Germaner

Pretoria - An investigator who probed the scene after Oscar Pistorius shot and killed Reeva Steenkamp has told the court of the forensic test he conducted on the athlete.

Barend “Bennie” van Staden was the crime scene photographer who also dealt with Pistorius just hours after the shooting.

Van Staden said when he arrived on the scene, he went to the garage alone, but Carl, Pistorius' brother was there as well.

He also said no one had been allowed upstairs before the scene was cleared.

The officer also noted that later in the day, Aimee Pistorius arrived with a friend to pick up clothes for Oscar, but that she didn't go near the bathroom.

Oscar Pistorius Went into 'Combat Mode' Over Washing Machine Noise (Video)

PRETORIA, South Africa March 17, 014

By LIEZL THOM via GOOD MORNING AMERICA

Oscar Pistorius once went into "code red and combat mode" when he mistook noise from his washing machine as an intruder, a gun expert who had done business with Pistorius told the Blade Runner's murder trial today.

Sean Patrick Rens, a firearms service provider who facilitates gun purchases, told the court he had sold several weapons to Pistorius.

Rens testified about a moment in 2012 when Pistorius came home and went into "code red and combat mode" because he heard a noise that he feared was an intruder.

Pistorius later tweeted, "Nothing like getting home to hear the washing machine on and thinking it's an intruder to go into full combat recon mode into the pantry!"

Five things we didn't know about Oscar Pistorius...until now

Tymon Smith | 17 March, 2014 09:23

PREPARED: After throwing up during evidence about
Reeva Steenkamp's fatal wounds, Oscar Pistorius
had a bucket ready

Here are five things that have been discovered about Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, who is accused of murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

1. When he is anxious, he screams like a girl. When things get tough, he retches.

Oscar Pistorius's lawyer, Barry Roux, has done his client's machismo no favours by indicating numerous times last week that his effeminate screams were an integral part of the defence. The screams witnesses heard were not the "bloodcurdling, terrified, anguished" cries of Reeva Steenkamp in fear for her life, but rather the anguished, anxious cries of Pistorius after realising what he had done. Roux put it to Pistorius's neighbour, radiologist Dr Johan Stipp, that he would be calling a sound expert who would testify to his surprise when he heard Pistorius scream much like a woman. He also said the defence had conducted "decibel tests" that would show the similarities. When Pistorius's former girlfriend, Samantha Taylor, testified that he had screamed in her presence many times and that his voice definitely sounded like a man's, Roux argued that she had only heard Pistorius scream in anger and never in a situation where his life was threatened. This raises the question of how the defence was able to create life-threatening conditions during their tests to replicate the Paralympian's anxious scream.

Ballistics cop testifies

18 March 2014 at 16:17 by Lonwabo Miso -  Ballistic details related to the four shots that killed murder-accused Oscar Pistorius's girlfriend were heard in the High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday.

Ballistics investigator Captain Christian Mangena gave this evidence on his examination of the toilet door through which Pistorius fired the shots that killed Reeva Steenkamp.

He said after reassembling the door at ballistics, with the original screws, he marked out the bullet holes and took it back to Pistorius's house in Silver Woods estate in Pretoria.

Forensics expert Colonel Johan Vermeulen helped him reassemble the door.

Mangena marked the bullet holes again and took their measurements.

Bullet hole "a" was at a 93.5cm height from the bathroom floor, "b" was 104.3cm, "d" was 99.4cm and "d" was 97.3cm," he testified.

Roux to continue questioning police witness

2014-03-18 07:22

On Monday a police photographer was questioned about photos he took of the scene of Reeva Steenkamp's killing.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel asked Warrant Officer Barend van Staden about the length of the right side of the wall leading into the bathroom in Pistorius's home.

Van Staden testified that he made a total of 15 photo albums relating to the crime, including Steenkamp's post mortem, the blood spatters throughout the house, and of the alarm system and the contents of a small safe in Pistorius's cupboard.

Pistorius's lawyer Barry Roux will continue cross-examining Van Staden.

In addition to the murder of Steenkamp, Pistorius is charged with contravening the Firearms Control Act.

Cop justifies moving Oscar's things

2014-03-17 18:55

Pretoria - A police investigator on Monday told the Oscar Pistorius murder trial that he had moved objects on the scene where the Paralympic athlete shot his girlfriend as a legitimate part of investigative work.

Warrant Officer Barend van Staden testified that he had turned and lifted objects, including a blood-stained duvet and the cricket bat Pistorius used to break down a door, to photograph them from various angles and look for further evidence.

"So you moved items on the scene?" asked prosecutor Gerrie Nel, in an apparent move to counter allegations from the defence that police had tampered with evidence.

Oscar Pistorius court battle focuses on crime scene photos

Pretoria, South Africa (CNN) -- The legal battle over the fate of Oscar Pistorius focuses on police photographs of the crime scene Tuesday, a day after a gun dealer testified that the Olympic athlete knew it was both illegal and unsafe to shoot through a closed door.

That's what Pistorius did on Valentine's Day last year, killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

He pleaded not guilty to murder, saying he thought she was an intruder.

But the testimony of gun dealer Sean Rens may rule out the possibility of acquittal, even if Judge Thokozile Masipa believes that Pistorius was genuinely mistaken about who was behind the door of the toilet room in his house.

Defense Targets Police Errors In Pistorius Trial

Matt Gutman reports on the latest news from the Oscar Pistorius murder trial.

PRETORIA, South Africa -- Police photographs of the blood-spattered scene where Oscar Pistorius shot dead his girlfriend indicate that evidence was moved around in violation of procedure during the investigation of the killing, the athlete's chief defense lawyer said Tuesday.

Warrant officer Bennie van Staden, a police photographer, took hundreds of photos of the scene, including of blood stains, bullet casings, a gun and a cricket bat found inside Pistorius' bathroom in the hours after the double-amputee Olympic runner shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp before dawn on Feb. 14, 2013.

Lawyer Barry Roux has challenged previous police witnesses, seeking to uncover contradictions and reported mishaps to support his argument that officers bungled the investigation, an allegation made by Pistorius at the start of the trial when he pleaded not guilty to murder in Steenkamp's killing.

Ballistics investigator testifies at Oscar Pistorius trial

Nick Zaccardi

Mar 18, 2014, 12:04 PM EDT

Oscar Pistorius fired at a slightly downward angle when he fatally shot his girlfriend last year, a police ballistics investigator testified at the double amputee Olympian’s murder trial Tuesday.

Pistorius and the prosecution agree that he was not wearing his prosthetic legs when he shot through his bathroom door on the early morning of Valentine’s Day 2013, killing Reeva Steenkamp.

South African police Capt. Christian Mangena said he reconstructed the scene of the shooting inside Pistorius’ Pretoria home one month later.

Mangena received and reassembled the broken bathroom door that Pistorius shot through from the outside, brought the door back inside Pistorius’ house and measured the height of four bullet holes.

Police used lasers to track Oscar Pistorius gunshots, murder trial hears

By Richard Allen Greene, CNN
March 18, 2014 -- Updated 1719 GMT (0119 HKT)

Pretoria, South Africa (CNN) -- Police used lasers to track the path of the bullets that Oscar Pistorius fired through a door, killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, a ballistics expert testified Tuesday.

Then they checked his height with and without his prosthetic legs, Police Capt. Christian Mangena said. He was on the verge of revealing his conclusions when time ran out and court adjourned for the day.

Oscar Pistorius trial: Defence claims sloppy police contaminated crime scene

TOM PECK PRETORIA Tuesday 18 March 2014

The defence in the Oscar Pistorius murder trial again sought to discredit the behaviour of the South African Police Service and show they “disturbed, contaminated and tampered with” crucial evidence at the athlete’s house when they arrived in the early hours of Valentine’s Day morning last year.

Over the course of several hours, Pistorius’s defence counsel Barry Roux led the crime scene photographer Warrant Officer Barend Van Staden through scores of his own photographs which he claimed showed that items had been moved around and disturbed by police officers.

Why, he demanded to know, was there such an apparent “disturbance” in a pile of objects on the bedroom carpet and why had some of them clearly been moved, he asked.

Van Staden has already claimed that once the preliminary set of photographs had been taken, it is common practice to pick up and move objects as part of a crime scene investigation.

Discrediting the work of the police has already come to form a crucial part of Pistorius’s team’s defence strategy.

Opinions:

1. How afraid was OP?
He knew there was a ladder outside the bathroom window that workers had left and he did not have it removed. (The ladder was too short to reach the windows. The bathroom window had three panes with the middle pane fixed or immobile. The other two panes had openings too small for a person to fit thru.)

2. OP lived in a gated community. There was a "roving" security guard. The guard actually called OP while making his rounds and he was right outside OP's home. OP had the phone numbers for the security office (24 hours monitored) AND the cell phone number for the guards when they were outside the guard house.

3. OP told officers he had gone to the balcony and brought in the two fans. He left the door open to the balcony when he supposedly went to bed.

Would these be the actions of a person afraid?

IMO, the prosecution has done an excellent job presenting their case.
The areas they have focused on:
Screams and other sounds
a. When were the screams heard and by whom?
b. Who made the screams?
c. When were the 4 gunshots heard?

Prosecution has presented solid witnesses.

Reeva's injuries
a. Professional witnesses have testified as to the 3 main areas

Damages to partition door
a. Damages were identified as belonging to 4 bullets, a cricket bat, and possibly a kick to the door panel
b. Expert used a laser to determine the angle of the trajectory and ht when bullet was fired
c. Prosecution amended original assertion re OP wearing prosthetics based upon the ht of bullet holes and OP's body dimensions with and without the legs

Conclusion:
a. OP stated he did not know Reeva as not in bed and was in the toilet area of the bathroom when he fired thru the door
b. Witnesses have stated Reeva would not have been able to have screamed IF she had first been shot in the head as the head injury was too severe
c. First shot went to Reeva's hip due to angle of injury matching door damage (using laser, etc.) and this is when she probably screamed.
(Bullet or bullet shards appears to have tumbled and damaged her toe/foot but prosecution is not stressing this.) She was standing and perhaps holding door shut.
d. Reeva WOULD have screamed with this injury
e. After being shot in the hip, Reeva backed up and sat down on toilet. Keep in mind the size of the cubicle is VERY small.
f. Reeva put her hand to her face to either protect face or in shock and pain. She was likely still screaming. He shot her thru the wrist shattering the wrist bones.
g. Reeva was next shot thru the head. The screaming stopped.

There was a bullet fired that did NOT penetrate Reeva but was found fired and loose in the toilet cubicle. It is likely this was fired second (or after item d above).

h. Reeva collapsed and partially fell over onto the magazine rack/holder to the left of the toilet as one would be seated.

Blood Evidence

Prosecution has supported there assertions with the pictures of the blood evidence in the cubicle area.

Prosecution has requested time to prepare for the balance of their case based upon the questions defense has posed. Prosecution has stated the defense questions HAS made them to reconsider their conclusions. They have requested no court for Thursday or Friday.
They may wrap their case Monday.

Prosecution has demonstrated OP was aware of the laws of the country. They presented his application, test results, and video relating to gun ownership and responsibility in SA.

Because OP blindly shot thru the door, OP failed to determine WHO he was shooting at; OP failed to demonstrate he was actually in danger, and this is in violation of gun laws, OP s guilty at least of criminal negligence resulting in the death of another. The penalty for this is very harsh and resulting court actions would deem OP could serve a sentence almost as harsh as a premeditated homicide. (I had heard the difference was @ 5 years.) Easier to prove the criminal negligence than a premeditated homicide.

"The court also heard from police ballistics expert Chris Mangena, who told the trial Steenkamp died in a protective position with a hand over her head.

Mr Mangena said Steenkamp was first hit in the hip and was in a defensive position in the toilet stall of Pistorius's flat when the last shot hit her head.

"The best probable explanation is the deceased was initially upright behind the closed door, she sustained a penetrating wound in the right side of the hip," Mr Mangena said.

The 29-year-old model and law graduate then fell onto a magazine rack where another bullet hit her right elbow, he said.

Mr Mangena told the court the last bullet hit Steenkamp's head, clipping her raised left hand.

"The deceased was seated in a defensive position," he said.

"The arm was lifted up, and was in front of her chest."

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel, mimicking the position with his own arms, asked: "You've both hands forward, with the left and right hand crossing the head?"

"That is correct," his witness answered.

The sequence of shots speaks to whether Steenkamp could have screamed during the shooting."

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- A police ballistics expert at the murder trial of South African Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius on Wednesday rejected the athlete’s assertion that he fired two sets of rapid gunshots when he killed his girlfriend, testifying that her wounds made such a claim impossible.

Pistorius fired four gunshots through a closed bathroom door, but Reeva Steenkamp’s wounds were not consistent with the results of so-called “double taps,” said Capt. Chris Mangena, a prosecution witness.

Mangena testified that two sets of very rapid gunshots would have resulted in Steenkamp being struck in the waist, where the first gunshot hit her, by all the shots.

“If it’s two double taps, she’s in a standing position, all the wounds will be here, in this position,” he said, indicating the waist.

Instead, Steenkamp suffered wounds to her hip, arm and head, indicating there had been a pause between the first shot and the three that followed, Mangena said. Given the position of the wounds, he said, the double taps scenario was "impossible."

Oscar Pistorius murder trial: Five things we learned from day 13

Mar 19, 2014 13:38   By Sam Chadderton

Dignified June Steenkamp, graphic blood spatter patterns, iPad porn and how long until we get a verdict - here's the round-up from day 13

3. Reeva Steenkamp's mother June is made of strong stuff

Debora Patta  @Debora_Patta

#OscarTrial Spoke to June Steenkamp in the break  - she said its hard being here but that as mother she had to come today

Once again there was graphic detailed evidence of Reeva Steenkamp's injuries which led to her death.

Some of the images were met by gasps from the public gallery.

Her dignified mother June remained in court through almost all of today's hearing - as she has on previous occasions when the case takes a turn for the grizzly.

5. Finally, an updated timeline

Some slight guesswork here, but we've at least got a revised timeline to work from thanks to a couple of clues from the prosecution.

State prosecutor Gerrie Nel indicated that he had "four or five" more witnesses to call from Monday onwards and would probably wrap up his case against Pistorius by next week.

It means around 80 of the 107 witnesses on his list will not be called to give evidence at all.

So the defence case, according to the BBC's Andrew Harding, could then last around three weeks.

Added to that written submissions before we get any final verdict and we could be looking at at least a couple of months before judgment and sentencing.

@BBCAndrewH in a case this high profile, how long should be expected before a final verdict? #OscarPistorius

@AlexBristow93 let's say three more weeks for defence, then long pause for written arguments… couple of months? then appeals? sentencing...

Oscar Pistorius Trial Day 13: Ballistics expert provides damning testimony against the Blade Runner

By Nastasya Tay     12 hours ago    Yahoo Sports

PRETOTRIA, South Africa – Reeva Steenkamp cowered behind the locked toilet door, her hands shielding her head, while she faced the volley of bullets flying at her, a ballistics expert told the court Wednesday.

Captain Chris Mangena demonstrated the body stance he believes the model took when her boyfriend Oscar Pistorius fired four bullets at her through a locked bathroom door: wrists crossed, trying to protect her head.

Mangena's testimony is critical.

Steenkamp's "defensive" position – which the defense has indicated they will contest – demonstrates that she had cognitive function after the first bullet hit her and was able to scream in pain, which would have alerted Pistorius to her presence behind the locked door.

Pathologist Gert Saayman, who conducted Steenkamp's autopsy, told Courtroom GD last week that it would have been "unnatural" for someone not to cry out in pain after the hip or arm wounds she received.

Oscar Pistorius trial extended to May 16: court

World | Agence France-Presse | Updated: March 23, 2014 16:57 IST

Johannesburg:  The murder trial of Paralympian Oscar Pistorius for shooting dead his girlfriend has been extended until May 16, the South African court hearing the case said on Sunday.

The trial, which enters its fourth week on Monday, will continue until April 4, then break for a recess before resuming from April 14 until May 16, the court in Pretoria announced in a statement.

It said "all parties involved" had agreed to the dates.

An extension of seven weeks is however surprising, as prosecutor Gerrie Nel said Wednesday before the trial was adjourned that he had no more than four or five witnesses to call to the stand.

Expert: Screaming gives Pistorius 'major problem'

GERALD IMRAY
Published: Today

JOHANNESBURG (AP) - Prosecutors at Oscar Pistorius' murder trial have presented a "golden thread" of evidence suggesting Reeva Steenkamp screamed before she died, leaving the double-amputee athlete with "serious questions" to answer and his defense likely hinging on his own testimony, a legal expert in South Africa said.

Three neighbors say they heard a woman scream before and during the deadly gunshots coming from Pistorius' home in the early hours of Valentine's Day last year. The pathologist who performed the autopsy on Steenkamp's body said it would have been "abnormal" for her not to scream from some of her injuries.

A police ballistics expert concluded that the first shot Pistorius fired through a toilet door hit Steenkamp in the hip and caused her to collapse, but didn't immediately kill her. The second shot missed. From the policeman's testimony, Steenkamp likely had time to yell out before she was hit by two more shots as she covered her head with her arms in a desperate attempt to protect herself.

Du Toit identified two areas he believes will be crucial to Pistorius' defense: The world-famous runner's own testimony and evidence given by the defense's forensic and ballistics experts.

Defense lawyer Roux has made it clear that Pistorius' experts will offer another version regarding the shots that killed Steenkamp, arguing that Pistorius fired with "double-tap" bursts that gave Steenkamp no time to scream, and so Pistorius did not realize he was shooting at Steenkamp.

Du Toit also noted that police experts did not test if parts of Pistorius' story were plausible.

"So all they (the defense) have to do is say, 'well you never bothered so we tested it and this is what we found," du Toit said.
