Oscar Pistorius has reportedly been dating a student paramedic in the weeks leading up to his trial for the murder of his ex-girlfriend.

The double amputee met 19-year-old Leah Skye Malan in Mozambique last December while she was holidaying with her mother, father and younger brother.

Miss Malan, who is the Paralympian's first girlfriend since he shot model Reeva Steenkamp last year, has been supporting him in the run-up to his court case, it was reported by The Sun.

Pistorius Witness Says She Heard a Fight Next Door

On Second Day of Trial, Neighbor Said Argument Occurred An Hour Before Fatal Shots

Oscar Pistorius speaks to his legal team ahead of the second day of his trial on Tuesday. Reuters

PRETORIA, South Africa—Shouts and screams filled a upscale neighborhood here moments before Oscar Pistorius shot dead his girlfriend, witnesses said Tuesday, marking a second day of testimony that lawyers for the South African sports star sought to discredit.

Estelle van der Merwe said she heard what sounded like an argument coming from Mr. Pistorius' home beginning an hour before the gunshots rang out that ended the life of Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day last year.

"It sounded like someone involved in a fight," Mrs. van der Merwe told the court. After she tried to block out the argument by placing a pillow over her head, she heard four bangs followed by the cries of a woman.

"I asked my husband who was crying like that and he said it was Oscar," said Mrs. van der Merwe, who lives across the street from Mr. Pistorius' home in a gated community on the eastern outskirts of Pretoria.

Oscar Pistorius Verdict in Hands of One Judge, Not a Jury

March 4, 2014

By ALYSSA NEWCOMB and LIEZL THOM via GOOD MORNING AMERICA

The Oscar Pistorius trial has become a worldwide blockbuster, but the fate of the Blade Runner paralympian is in the control of one judge who will pronounce the athlete innocent or guilty of murder in his girlfriend's shooting death.

In South Africa, jury trials were abolished in 1969 -- during the white minority rule known as apartheid -- as there were fears of racial prejudice by jurors.

Here's a look at how the trial is expected to progress and what Judge Thokozile Masipa will have to weigh as she makes her decision.

Meet the Judge
Judge Thokozile Masipa will be helped by two assessors, who will likely be legal experts, as she decides her verdict.

South Africa press review: Pistorius trial

The trial has attracted unprecedented media coverage

The world media's fascination with the trial for murder of double-amputee Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius is amply reflected in the coverage by the media in his native South Africa. Several newspapers have live pages online and are covering the proceedings blow by blow.

But it was problems over translating the evidence of the first witness that caught the attention of Afrikaans-language daily Beeld.

South African website News24 describes an "unusual start" to an "unusual" trial, saying it is the first of its kind in the country, as it involves a celebrity and a "huge international following", and requires the court to rule on media access.

"The trial is scheduled to last for three weeks, but it promises to be much, much longer than that," it concludes.

On the front page of daily The Star is a photograph of Mr Pistorius with the caption "Oscar screams like a woman". The headline relates to the contention by the defence that the screams Michelle Burger says she heard were those of Oscar Pistorius, not the girlfriend he is accused of murdering, Reeva Steenkamp.

Oscar Pistorius broke down and wept during the second day of his trial for the murder of his FHM model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp after hearing how the model could not have screamed out for help afterwards because he shot her in the head, leaving her with “serious brain damage”.

The trial, which is being broadcast live on television across the world, has heard from neighbour Michelle Burger that she heard Steenkamp screaming before the fatal shots were fired, and could still hear her as they rang out.

Another neighbour, Estelle van der Merwe, testified that she heard the couple arguing over an hour before she heard the fatal gunshots in the early hours of last St Valentine’s Day.

Oscar Pistorius trial: Witness recounts accidental shooting in restaurant

By Richard Allen Greene and Marie-Louise Gumuchian, CNN
updated 9:49 AM EST, Wed March 5, 2014

Oscar Pistorius sits in court on the third day of his trial in Pretoria, South Africa, on Wednesday, March 5. Pistorius, the first amputee to compete at an able-bodied Olympics, is accused of murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on February 14, 2013.

Pretoria, South Africa (CNN) -- "Blade Runner" Oscar Pistorius asked a friend to take the blame when he accidentally discharged a pistol under the table at a Johannesburg restaurant one month before he killed his girlfriend, another athlete testified Wednesday in the runner's murder trial.

On the third day of the South African Olympic and Paralympic track star's trial in Pretoria, professional boxer Kevin Lerena described how he, Pistorius and two others were having dinner at Tashas restaurant when the gun went off.

Oscar Pistorius trial: Witness tells of restaurant shooting cover-up

By Robyn Dixon
March 5, 2014, 3:12 a.m.

PRETORIA, South Africa -- Oscar Pistorius asked a friend to lie and take the blame after Pistorius accidentally fired a shot in a popular restaurant in an upscale Johannesburg neighborhood last year, according to testimony in the South African Olympic athlete's murder trial Wednesday.

Boxer Kevin Lerena told the Gauteng North High Court that he was with Pistorius and other friends at Tasha’s restaurant in Melrose Arch in January 2013, weeks before Pistorius fatally shot his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in his apartment in the early hours of Valentine’s Day that year.

~Snipped~

The evidence presented by the prosecution about the accidental gunshot at Tasha’s appears designed to show that not only was Pistorius reckless about firearms, but that he was willing to lie about it. The other firearms charge accuses him of firing a gun out of a car’s sunroof.

Pistorius Trial: Focus Switches to His Character

PRETORIA, South Africa March 5, 2014 (AP)

By GERALD IMRAY Associated Press

Prosecutors on Wednesday changed the focus of Oscar Pistorius' murder trial to the world-famous athlete's character and trustworthiness. In the Pretoria court they raised an incident when a gun was accidentally fired in a packed restaurant while being passed to Pistorius and, according to a witness' testimony, the Olympian asked a friend to take the blame.

The switch to one of the other three firearm-related counts Pistorius faces alongside the main charge of murder in his girlfriend's shooting death also came after defense lawyer Barry Roux cast doubts on two prosecution witnesses' recollection of events surrounding Reeva Steenkamp's killing.

———

THE RESTAURANT SHOT

The court heard that a friend decided to "take the rap" for Pistorius after the gun was shot by mistake under the table of a busy restaurant with a child nearby weeks before Steenkamp's shooting death.

South African boxer Kevin Lerena testified that Pistorius, who was being given the gun when it fired into the floor, said to the friend at the time: "Take the blame because this could be big."

The incident in a Johannesburg restaurant happened in mid-January last year, just a month before Pistorius shot Steenkamp at his home. The testimony that Pistorius asked the friend, Darren Fresco, to own up in his place was never seriously challenged by the athlete's defense and raises questions over whether he can be trusted to tell the truth.

Pistorius trial: Who are the witnesses?

By GERALD IMRAY Associated Press
Updated:   03/02/2014 11:41:17 AM EST

JOHANNESBURG—Prosecutors have named 107 witnesses they can call at Oscar Pistorius' trial. Here's a look at some of them and what they might testify about:
———

WHO SCREAMED AND WHEN?

Did Steenkamp scream before she was shot? Prosecutors maintain they have witnesses who will testify to events that contradict Pistorius' story and suggest there was an argument before she was shot dead. Twenty people—neighbors, security guards and other workers—who are connected to the gated estate where Pistorius lived are on the witness list. Witnesses "heard a woman scream, followed by moments of silence, then heard gunshots and then more screaming," prosecutors say in indictment papers. Pistorius says that he was the only person to scream before shooting Steenkamp through the toilet door and he did that to tell any intruder he thought was there to get out of his house.

———

EXPERTS

Was Pistorius walking on his stumps, as he says, vulnerable and fearful when he shot? What do the grouping of the shots fired through the door and the trajectory of the fatal bullets show?

Prosecutors allege that Pistorius fired with a cold intention to kill and not in the way someone who was panicked and trying to make an intruder leave his home would. Bullet holes close together could show that he didn't fire a warning shot as someone might when acting in self-defense. Blood spatter experts will say what position Steenkamp was in when she was hit by the three bullets and whether she was on the toilet or hiding behind the door—maybe hiding from Pistorius.

Prosecutors have at least 10 criminal experts listed as witnesses, including forensic and ballistics specialists and criminal psychologists, but also may have to concede that Pistorius had not put on his prosthetic legs, as they maintained, if the bullet holes are lower down. That could be a blow to the state's case as they say he put on his legs while planning the killing.

———

PISTORIUS: RECKLESS—OR WORSE—WITH GUNS?

Pistorius' past behavior with guns will almost certainly be scrutinized after prosecutors indicated they will add two other firearm-related charges. The details of the charges, not yet clarified, reportedly revolve around one incident when Pistorius allegedly fired a gun out of the sunroof of a car and another event, weeks before the killing, when he fired a gun by mistake in a restaurant.

In the first, Pistorius allegedly fired angrily out the sunroof after an altercation with traffic police in 2012. Samantha Taylor, Pistorius' ex-girlfriend, and friend Darren Fresco are believed to have also been in the car and are witnesses.

Pistorius was first seen with Reeva Steenkamp at an awards ceremony in South Africa last November. Initially, the model said the pair were 'just friends'.

But when it became clear that Pistorius and Miss Steenkamp were in fact dating, the sportsman's then ex Samantha Taylor lashed out: 'Oscar has such a way with women. She’s probably not the only one he’s got.'

Miss Taylor went on to tell South Africa's City Press newspaper that 'Oscar is certainly not what people think he is'.

Oscar Pistorius trial LIVE: 'Sound was cricket bat banging bathroom door, not gunshots'

05 March 2014

The chief defence lawyer in Oscar Pistorius' murder trial has sought to undermine the prosecution evidence of a couple who say they heard a woman's screams and gunfire the night the athlete fatally shot his girlfriend.

Lawyer Barry Roux said telephone records will show that the banging sounds the neighbours heard were instead a distressed Pistorius hitting a toilet door with a cricket bat to get to fatally wounded girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

~Snipped~

Cross-examining Mr Johnson on the third day of the blockbuster trial, Mr Roux said call records will show Pistorius called an estate manager at around 3.19am and soon after he bashed in the door with the bat.

In Mr Johnson and Ms Burger's evidence, they said they heard what they described as shots straight after making a call to security at 3.16am. The similar times show the sounds were the bat on the door, Mr Roux argued.

"There is only one thing you could have heard, because it coincides precisely," Mr Roux said to Mr Johnson. "That was the time that he (Pistorius) broke down the door (with the bat)."

Five things we learned from Day Three of Oscar Pistorius' murder trial

Mar 05, 2014 14:46
By Steve Robson

Oscar Pistorius Trial: Day 3

~Snipped~

1. What is going on in Oscar Pistorius' head?

The athlete arrived with far less fanfare this morning, even managing a smile and a 'hello' to journalists as he strolled into court.

But after discussions with his brief Barry Roux, the runner held his head in his hands and looked on the verge of tears.

After he was pictured grinning towards the public gallery on Monday, it's clear the trial is going to be a rollercoaster of emotions for Pistorius.

~Snipped~

5. Charl Johnson is sticking to his guns

The day began with Barry Roux continuing his cross examination of Charl Johnson - the neighbour of Oscar Pistorius.

The defence lawyer spent much of the morning making pain-staking efforts to prove Mr Johnson must have colluded with his wife over their evidence.

He alleged there were six examples of words they had both used in court to describe the incident, which neither used in their written statements to police.

Oscar Pistorius trial: Athlete asked friend to 'take the blame' after firing gun in restaurant

Tom Peck | Pretoria | Wednesday 05 March 2014

~Snipped~

Mr Lerena told the court that Fresco's gun fired into the floor as it was passed under the table to Pistorius, having told the sprinter he was "one up" - that there was a bullet loaded into the chamber.

"Then a shot went off in the restaurant and there was complete silence," Mr Lerena said. "I looked down, I was in shock. Exactly where my foot was, there was a hole in the floor.

"I wasn’t injured, but there was blood on my toe. I've never been in a confined area where gunshot has gone off. There could have been a fatality.

"Oscar said to Darren, 'Just say it was you. I don’t want any tension around me. Just say it was you. Please take the blame for me. There's too much media hype around me.' And Darren took the blame for him."

"You can't quote me on those exact words," Mr Lerena said. "But that was the [nature of the] matter."

Hi Ann,

Yes, indeed. It is a very interesting interactive illustration of Pistorius' versions of the events surrounding Reeva's death. That's what he stated in his affidavit. And, that's why his lawyer is so determined to poke holes in the ear witnesses' testimonies. If they heard a woman screaming (or two people arguing) before the shots were fired, the defense scenario (involving an intruder) cannot be true.

Witness feared Pistorius might kill himself after shooting girlfriend

Reuters
6:51 a.m. CST, March 6, 2014

PRETORIA— One of the first people on the scene after Oscar Pistorius shot girlfriendReeva Steenkamp told a court on Thursday he feared the South African Olympic and Paralympic star, who is on trial for murder, might kill himself with the same gun.

Testifying on the fourth day of Pistorius' trial, neighbor Johan Stipp said he entered the athlete's home last year a few minutes after hearing screams and shots to find the distraught sprinter kneeling over the lifeless body of a woman.

"'I shot her. I thought she was a burglar and I shot her,'" Stipp quoted the 27-year-old Pistorius as saying.

Stipp, a doctor, went on to describe his futile attempts to revive Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model and law graduate who been dating Pistorius for a few months.

She died after being hit by three rounds, including one to the head, out of four fired by Pistoriusthrough the locked door of an upstairs toilet. He denies murder, arguing that it was a tragic mistake and that he mistook her for an intruder.

As Stipp checked Steenkamp for signs of life, Pistorius was begging him to save her life, Stipp told the court.

Gerald Imray ‏@GeraldImrayAP  · 18m
#OscarPistorius And at the moment, it's muddled over if most screams were before or after shots, and if they were just OP or both

Gerald Imray ‏@GeraldImrayAP  · 21m
#OscarPistorius Worth remembering as colleague reminds: state has to prove its case completely. OP defense just has to throw doubt.

Gerald Imray ‏@GeraldImrayAP  · 32m
#OscarPistorius BUT who was the person Stipp says he saw in the bathroom earlier? And when were the lights on/off for him to see that person

Gerald Imray ‏@GeraldImrayAP  · 38m
#OscarPistorius Stipp happy to say, to both pros & defense, that OP appeared sincere and traumatized, praying and trying to save RS

Gerald Imray ‏@GeraldImrayAP  · 40m
#OscarPistorius The state used doctor Stipp's testimony to describe gruesome injuries of RS as she died. Esp. head shot and "brain tissue"

Gerald Imray ‏@GeraldImrayAP  · 42m
#OscarPistorius To try and summarize: Defense maintains the sequence of shots, OP screams, then the bangs of bat on door

Gerald Imray ‏@GeraldImrayAP  · 53m
#OscarPistorius And we're now adjourned. Suddenly. OP is still sitting, hand over eyes with sister? maybe hugging him

Gerald Imray ‏@GeraldImrayAP  · 1h
#OscarPistorius Witness says he saw light on at time of screaming. Remember OP says dark there until after shooting, why he claims mistake

Gerald Imray ‏@GeraldImrayAP  · 1h
#OscarPistorius Here we go. Roux says exact time? Witness not exact, just a reference. When I heard screaming.

Gerald Imray ‏@GeraldImrayAP  · 1h
#OscarPistorius Almost missed: Witness says saw a person in bathroom window in OP's house. When is crucial. OP in toilet b4 he says he was?

Gerald Imray ‏@GeraldImrayAP  · 1h
#OscarPistorius Roux getting photo up for exhibit on court monitors. He was establishing OP's mentality as RS dying. Stipp said OP "sincere"

Gerald Imray ‏@GeraldImrayAP  · 1h
#OscarPistorius And likewise, if defense can show not possible for RS to scream, OP's story is reinforced. Critical central argument

Gerald Imray ‏@GeraldImrayAP  · 1h
#OscarPistorius Crucially: If state can show possibility RS screamed at ANY time, OP should have known where she was, therefore not mistake

Witness: Pistorius Prayed Over His Shot Girlfriend

PRETORIA, South Africa March 6, 2014 (AP)

By GERALD IMRAY and CHRISTOPHER TORCHIA Associated Press

As the girlfriend he shot lay dead or dying in his home, a weeping, praying Oscar Pistorius knelt at her side and struggled in vain to help her breathe by holding two fingers in her clenched mouth, a witness testified Thursday at the double-amputee runner's murder trial.

"'I shot her. I thought she was a burglar. I shot her,'''radiologist Johan Stipp recalled Pistorius saying.

A few minutes later, Stipp said, Pistorius went upstairs — the area where he had shot Reeva Steenkamp — and then returned. At that point, Stipp said he was concerned that the gun used in the shooting had not been recovered and that a distraught Pistorius was going to harm himself. The testimony did not address what Pistorius did when he went upstairs.

The testimony in a provincial court was the first detailed, public description of the immediate aftermath of the shooting of Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model, by the Paralympic champion in the pre-dawn hours of Feb. 14 — Valentine's Day — last year.

At his bail hearing last year, Pistorius said in a statement read by Roux that, after he realized he had shot Steenkamp, he pulled on his prosthetic legs and tried to kick down the toilet door before finally giving up and bashing it in with a cricket bat. Inside, he said he found Steenkamp, slumped over but still alive. He said he lifted her bloodied body and carried her downstairs to seek medical help

Pistorius breaks down as trial hears grisly details of girlfriend's killing

By Richard Allen Greene and Marie-Louise Gumuchian, CNN
updated 9:14 AM EST, Thu March 6, 2014

~Snipped~

"I remember the first thing he said when I got there was, 'I shot her, I thought she was a burglar and I shot her,' " Stipp told the court in Pretoria.

He said he had arrived and found Steenkamp's body lying at the bottom of the stairs. Pistorius was bent over her body with his left hand over her right groin and two fingers of his right hand in her mouth as he tried to clear her airway.

Stipp tried to assist and said he found no signs of pulse in her neck, no peripheral pulse nor breathing movements.

As the doctor described the details of her injuries to the court, Pistorius broke down with his head in his hands. He was also seen convulsing but then recovered and wiped his face and nose with a handkerchief.

Stipp, who said he had trained in the army with assault rifles and 9 mm pistols -- the gun that killed Steenkamp -- said he had been surprised to hear no ambulance had been called when he arrived. He left after it did.

Oscar Pistorius told guards 'it's fine' after gunshots

Paralympian Oscar Pistorius told security guards everything was “fine” after he shot his girlfriend, it was claimed yesterday.

By Marc Walker/Published 22nd February 2014

Pistorius, 27, had been phoned by night watchmen at the gated housing estate after they heard gunfire.

But the gold medal winner, nicknamed Blade Runner, is alleged to have said he was fine and never mentioned model Reeva Steenkamp was dead.

He also failed to ask for an ambulance or emergency services to go to the mansion in Pretoria
, South Africa, where the 29-year-old blonde lay in a pool of blood.

The claims are made in a prosecution document handed to the sprinter’s defence team but leaked to South African TV news channel eNCA. More details from the document have been revealed by the South African radio news service EyeWitness News.

It also revealed how police plan to rely on the athlete’s internet browsing history to prove he intended to kill Reeva.

They claim his internet activity on the night she died “is in direct contrast to that of a loving couple spending time together”.

From twitter above:

Didn't OP state the bathroom window was open?
That would help explain how a witness could see light from that room.
Also, would explain how neighbors clearly heard the screams and the gunshots...

I am not impressed with the "weeping" OP did at the scene of the crime nor his "head in hands" theatrics in court. Pure emotion, not necessarily grief, can find a person in tears and unable to speak. Happiness, surprise, elation... doesn't have to be the negative emotions.

Pistorius family mark anniversary of Oscar's mum's death

Yahoo South Africa News – 14 hours ago.

The Pistorius family marked the anniversary of their mother’s death by spending another day in the North Gauteng High Court today.

Sheila Pistorius died on March 6, 2002, after she had an allergic reaction to medication she was taking for a suspected case of Malaria.

Oscar Pistorius was 15 at the time. He has repeatedly credited his mother as the woman who inspired him the most in life.

Oscar has his mother’s birthday and the anniversary of her death tattooed on his arm.

Oscar Pistorius' emotional -- sometimes even theatrical -- reactions to grisly witness testimony show a man who appears to be deeply disturbed about the night he claims to have accidentally shot and killed his girlfriend.

Baba switches to English to restate that, while on the phone to Baba and starting to cry, Pistorius said “everything is fine”.

“Yes, I will deal with that on Monday,” Roux responds.

Pistorius Ex Testifies About Infidelity, Gun Passion

PRETORIA, South Africa, March 7, 2014
By LIEZL THOM via GOOD MORNING AMERICA

ABC Entertainment News | ABC Business News

Pistorius' Ex Gives Emotional Testimony in Murder Trial

Oscar Pistorius' former girlfriend Samantha Taylor broke down and cried today as she testified about the paralympian's obsession with guns and the reasons their relationship failed.

"He cheated on me with Reeva Steenkamp," she told the court. He's on trial for her murder, having shot her through a bathroom door, claiming he thought she was an intruder.

~Snipped~

Taylor was called to testify about an incident in which Pistorius allegedly fired a bullet through an open sunroof of a car. A mutual friend, Darren Fresco, was driving the vehicle in which she and Pistorius were passengers when Fresco was pulled over for speeding. As the police officer approached, Pistorius placed his gun on the seat next to him, Taylor said.

She said the officer admonished Pistorius and momentarily took hold of the weapon. Bullets fell out of the gun. According to Taylor, Pistorius was extremely angry that the officer touched his gun and discussed firing at a traffic light. Instead, she said, he fired the gun out of the sunroof, after which both men laughed.

Oscar Pistorius: Paralympian to take stand in trial

Last Updated: 07/03/14 2:09pm

Oscar Pistorius: Day five of his trial in Pretoria

An ex-girlfriend of Oscar Pistorius broke down as she told how the athlete cheated on her with Reeva Steenkamp - as it emerged the Paralympian would give evidence during his trial.

Samantha Taylor also told how Pistorius once shot a bullet through the roof of a car sunroof - and on another occasion waved a gun at a car which he thought was following him.

Her evidence came on the fifth day of the trial at the Pretoria court, where a Pistorius family spokesperson Anneliese Burgess confirmed for the first time that the athlete will, at some point, take the stand at the trial.

PRETORIA, South Africa — The murder trial of Oscar Pistorius took a turn toward reality TV Friday with the testimony of one of the Paralympic runner's ex-girlfriends.

Courtroom GD was a titter as a young, blonde woman named Samantha Taylor took to the witness stand at Pretoria's High Court to testify about her dating history with 27-year-old Pistorius.

In her testimony, she recounted Pistorius's fiery temper — he had screamed at Taylor and her friends. The pitch of Oscar Pistorius's screams has become surprisingly relevant in this trial, the defense arguing that screams heard by neighbors the night of Steenkamp's death were Pistorius's, rather than his girlfriend's. Taylor specifically responded to suggestions that Pistorius screams like a woman: It is "not true," she said.

" ...There was one occasion when something hit the bathroom window and Oscar woke me up and asked me if I heard it," Taylor said. "He got up with his gun."

But he woke you up, Nel asked.

"Yes. There was probably one or two occasions when he woke me up to ask me if I heard something," Taylor replied.

Pistorius did not attempt to wake or locate Steenkamp before he shot the 29-year-old model by mistake, according to his own version of events.

Taylor said Pistorius always kept his gun on a table by the bed at home, and always slept on the right side of the bed. Pistorius says his 9 mm pistol was under the bed on the night he shot Steenkamp and he says he was sleeping on the other side of the bed because of a sports injury....."
