NORTH BLOOMFIELD, OH – Authorities are continuing their search Sunday morning for a missing toddler in Trumbull County after the girl wandered off Friday evening.

Rainn Peterson, two-years-old, was reported missing by her great-grandparents on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

She was last seen at 7759 State Route 45 in New Bloomfield wearing a purple long-sleeved shirt with snowflake sequins, gray pants, and multicolored pink and lime green shoes.

The search on Sunday morning is centered around Norton Lane, which is a few hundred yards from the toddler's great-grandparents home because search dogs picked up Peterson's scent in that area.

Volunteers that are willing to help in the search for Peterson are asked to go to check in at the Bristolville Fire Department.

Trumbull County Sheriff Thomas Altiere tells WKYC that Peterson and two other siblings, ages three and four, were playing inside the house earlier Friday night. The siblings told Trumbull County Sheriffs that was the last time they saw Peterson.

"We're looking everywhere. We're not putting a limit on the search. We will keep searching until we find her," Sheriff Altiere said.

Peterson has brown shoulder length hair, brown eyes, and 3'0" tall.

Brandi Peterson, the mother of missing 2-year-old Rainn Peterson, spoke Saturday afternoon with WKYC and told us that she was out with her boyfriend when her grandparents called and said that the toddler had gone missing.

"Around 7 o'clock yesterday I was at a tattoo shop with my boyfriend when I got a call that my daughter had gone missing," said Brandi Peterson.

Trumbull County Sheriff's Department has been aided by the FBI, Ashtabula County Sheriffs, Howland Township Police, Niles Police, K-9 units from Columbus and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation as well as volunteers.

Anyone with information on the missing toddler is asked to please call the Trumbull County Dispatch Center at ‪(330)-675-2730‬.

Trumbull County Sheriff Tom Altiere says the girl was with her two young brothers before the family says she disappeared.

The sheriff says the family has been cooperating with investigators and that there were no signs of violence at the home.

Police dogs and a helicopter along with the FBI were assisting in the search Saturday.

The girl's mother wasn't home when the toddler went missing.

NORTH BLOOMFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – The search for missing two-year-old Rainn Peterson continues Sunday.

Sheriff Altiere said that volunteers are no longer being accepted as there are “more than enough volunteers” to aid in the search.

No new leads have been discovered in the case.

Search dogs picked up Rainn’s scent about 200 yards north of the house in the woods near Norton Lane. The search will begin where dogs picked up her scent on Saturday.

The search is expanding to a two mile radius.

A helicopter is circling the area near the house. A plane with high definition is coming to assist in the search. The plane has different capabilities than the helicopter.

Seven sex offenders were interviewed. No leads were produced from the interviews.

Sheriff Altiere said the office has found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

Missing North Bloomfield girl’s mom: “It’s the worst feeling in the world”

NORTH BLOOMFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – UPDATE: The search for a missing 2-year-old girl in North Bloomfield will resume at 7 a.m. Sunday. Search dogs and others will start at the house on Route 45 and work from there.

Little Rainn Peterson was last seen at the house at approximately 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Searchers feel they will make more progress on Sunday, making use of a thermal-imaging helicopter and an airplane that enables high-resolution photos of the area to be taken. Weather conditions are expected to be more favorable.

Police have issued an endangered missing child alert for Rainn Peterson, who was last seen at her great-grandparents’ house, located at 7759 State Route 45 in North Bloomfield, according to Trumbull County 911 Supervisor Eric Luketic.

FBI officers are giving lie-detector tests to Peterson’s family members. “We want to clear people and eliminate any possible suspects,” Trumbull County Sheriff Thomas Altiere said.

Search to resume this morning for Trumbull County toddler

Investigators from the Ohio Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Investigation Crimes Against Children Unit, the FBI, members of the Trumbull, Ashtabula, Geauga County Law Enforcement Task Force and area fire departments are all taking part in investigation into the disappearance of the little girl.

Spokesperson for the Ohio Attorney General's Office, Jill DelGreco says that just because Investigators from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation Crimes Against Children Unit are on the scene, it does not necessarily mean that a crime has been committed.

Because bad weather grounded a helicopter equipped with a thermal imaging camera, the search was limited to the ground on Saturday. Bloodhounds from the Columbus area are also part of the search effort.

Sheriff Tom Altiere tells 21 News that they are not looking for volunteers to join the search. He says authorities don't want to contaminate evidence in the area if it turns out to be a crime scene

~Snipped~

Polygraph experts from the FBI and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation were on the scene administering tests to relatives and others.

Sources tell 21 News that polygraph results corroborated the alibi of Rainn Peterson's father who is estranged from his wife.

Altiere says detectives have also interviewed registered sex offenders who live in the area.

A search of the state sex offender database shows five registered offenders either live or work within five miles of the home where the little girl was last seen.

The Sheriff did not say if the interviews turned up any evidence relating to the disappearance of the child.

Rainn's mother, Brandi Peterson told 21 News that the great grandmother discovered that the little girl was missing when she called for the children to come up for dinner Friday evening.

Trumbull toddler recovering in the hospital after two days in the elements

By Mike Gauntner, Online Content Manager

NORTH BLOOMFIELD, Ohio - Rainn Peterson is recovering in a hospital after spending nearly two days exposed to chilly and rainy weather in Northern Trumbull County.

After disappearing from her great grandparent's home on State Route 45 Friday evening, Victor Sutton, riding by himself on a four-wheeler spotted the two-year-old in a field just after 6:30 p.m.Sunday. According to Trumbull County 9-1-1 dispatch, Rainn was found lying on the ground.

Sutton radioed in for permission before picking up the crying child.

She was found near Peck Leach Road, about a mile away from her great grandparent's home on State Route 45.

The moment of her recovery was snapped by a cell phone and distributed over social media.

Investigators say the little girl was cold and was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph hospital.

Wearing bib overalls, a long sleeved shirt and tennis shoes, it appears that the toddler spent nearly 48 hours in temperatures that dipped as low as 41 degrees.

In addition, nearly one-third of an inch of rain fell on Saturday in Bloomfield Township.

When a deputy working in another search area learned through his radio that Rainn had been found, he shouted it to those around him.  He told those in the immediate area that they needed to clear the road and make way for ad ambulance.

I was beyond elated when I read that she was found alive after being missing for almost 48 hours. This is about as close as you'll get to a real miracle.

NORTH BLOOMFIELD - Rainn Peterson was found alive in a field off Peck Leach Road nearly 48 hours after she was reported missing, just after 6:30 Sunday evening.

Investigators are still looking into what caused her disappearance.

A volunteer who was riding around the field on his four-wheeler came across her sleeping in some tall grass when he called 911.

"I found baby Rainn and she's alive!" he said right away.

She was asleep on the ground when he located her, and he can be heard asking the dispatcher many times if he can pick her up because she was crying.

Mom sees Rainn Peterson: Great grandparents seek custody

October 5, 2015

Brandi Peterson

NORTH BLOOMFIELD, Ohio - Rainn Peterson’s great grandparents will be in Trumbull County Family Court Tuesday in a bid to have the two-year-old placed in their care.

The toddler is recovering in a hospital from cuts and scrapes suffered during her two day disappearance from her great grandparent’s home in North Bloomfield this past weekend.

On Monday afternoon Brandi Peterson was permitted to visit her daughter for the first time since a lone searcher found the little girl in a field about a half mile from where she disappeared.

The visitation was only allowed under the supervision of officials from Trumbull County Children’s Services.

When asked if that was standard protocol under such circumstances, Children Services would only tell 21 News that each case is handled on an individual basis.

~Snipped~

Although Sheriff Tom Altiere told 21 News Reporter Janet Rogers that there is no evidence at all to suggest Rain Peterson was harbored or abducted, he says the investigation is still continuing.

On Monday the FBI was back at the site where the toddler was found on Peck Leach road.

The Sheriff says as a precaution they are treating the field as a crime scene until investigation is completed.

NORTH BLOOMFIELD, Ohio-- The man who found missing Trumbull County toddler Rainn Peterson said he first expected the worst, but his fear turned to "total elation" when he discovered the 2-year-old was alive.

Vic Sutton, of North Bloomfield, was among hundreds of volunteers and law enforcement who joined in the two-day search for Rainn, who disappeared from her grandparents' home Friday evening.

"I just was in the right place, but it could've been anybody, literally. I didn't do anything special or unique," Sutton told Fox 8 News reporter Matt Wright. "I just spotted her."

Happy that missing Trumbull County toddler Rainn Peterson is found, police say many unanswered questions exist

By  John Caniglia, The Plain Dealer
on October 05, 2015 at 5:47 PM, updated October 05, 2015 at 10:21 PM

NORTH BLOOMFIELD, Ohio – The volunteers who searched for two days through the thicket and fields of this Northeast Ohio farming community proclaimed the finding of missing toddler Rainn Peterson an act of God.

~Snipped~

And when volunteer searcher Victor Sutton found the child covered with flies, nearly 48 hours after she went missing, the tiny community whooped and offered prayers of thanks.

~Snipped~

On Monday, the community in northern Trumbull County continued its prayers of thanks.

But residents also began asking haunting questions: How could a tiny 2-year-old survive the 42-degree temperatures Friday night and the heavy rains that soaked the region Saturday? And how could she have wandered so far into fields where coyotes prey on small animals?

"That's the reason why we are trying to backtrack the child's steps,'' said Trumbull County Sheriff Thomas Altiere. "We are ruling nothing out. Our investigation is far from being completed. We finished chapter 1. Now, we are moving to chapter 2.''

Altiere said the child was with her two brothers, both near the age of 5, at their great-grandparents' home on Ohio 45 in North Bloomfield. The great-grandparents, Richard and Dora-Mae Peterson, who are in their 70s, have temporary custody of the children. He could not offer details as to why.

Questions surround 2-year-old's disappearance (Video)

Andrew Horansky, 8:26 p.m. EDT October 5, 2015

Investigators are not ruling anything out in the girl's disappearance and discovery

WARREN, Ohio -- It was an intense, emotional weekend in Trumbull County after a 2-year-old girl went missing Friday and was found alive Sunday.

~Snipped~

Yet critical questions remain, such as, "How did a search party comb the region twice where she was found without finding her?" And, "How did she survive nights alone in cold, rainy weather without help?"

"We don't know," said Sheriff Altiere. "And that's what we're doing. We're going to go from where we found her, and we're going to try to trace back."

~Snipped~

On Monday, the sheriff's office also followed up on leads they did not have time for Sunday, while looking into things such as what and when Rainn ate.

"I don't want a defense attorney to come up and say, 'Well you didn't do this or you didn't do that,' " said Sheriff Altiere. "So when we get in a defense mode, we cover every base we can."

Update: Great-grandparents retain custody of Rainn Peterson

Andrew Horansky, 4:12 p.m. EDT October 6, 2015

Rainn Peterson is currently being treated at a local hospital for an infection stemming from severe diaper rash.

WARREN, Ohio -- It was an intense, emotional weekend in Trumbull County after Rainn Peterson, 2, went missing Friday and was found alive Sunday.

On Tuesday afternoon, a judge ruled that her great-grandparents Richard and Dora Mae Peterson would retain custody of Rainn. Rainn's mother will have visitation rights.

Investigators aren't sure what happened to Rainn Peterson, who is currently being treated at a local hospital for an infection stemming from severe diaper rash and is expected to remain there for at least one more day, during that time.

WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – Tuesday, the mother, father and great-grandparents of Rainn Peterson, a Trumbull County two-year-old who went missing for two days and was found after a massive search, agreed that the girl’s great-grandparents would get temporary custody of the girl.

The agreement was reached by all parties at a custody hearing Tuesday afternoon, according to Trumbull County Children Services Executive Director Tim Schaffner.

“Nobody wanted Rainn to go anywhere but to people who loved her, and that’s what drove the common agreement to send her back to the home that she knows,” Schaffner said.

Rainn’s mother, Brandi, declined comment to WKBN Tuesday afternoon, saying only, “It’s aggravating, it’s aggravating,” as she was walking away.

Custody of Rainn Peterson will remain with great-grandparents

WARREN, Ohio-- Two-year-old Rainn Peterson will remain with her great-grandparents, following a custody battle.

That decision came down Tuesday afternoon as the mother of the toddler who was missing for two days was in court battling for custody. Brandi Peterson said she hasn't been allowed to see her daughter for more than a half hour or alone since the toddler was rescued. She said Children Services wants to give custody to her grandparents.

The toddler is being treated at St. Joseph's Hospital for dehydration, cuts, poison ivy and severe diaper rash. The Trumbull County sheriff has said family members are not suspects at this time, but Brandi believes she is being treated like a suspect.

The father of  Rainn, Nicholas Martin, of Cleveland, also appeared at Trumbull County Family Court on Tuesday. He would not say if he would be fighting for custody, but said he wanted to thank everyone who searched for his daughter.

Sheriff Tom Altiere said they are still trying to sort out exactly how the toddler got out of the home.

What baffles me is, in the rescue picture, the child's hair is clean appearing (despite spending 48 hours walking/crawling/sleeping in weeds and tall grass), and her hair is well kept despite it being cold and rainy. How could her hair not appear to be rained on when you can see the rain on the rescuer's jacket???

Edited:
Could the mother have snatched the child, denied knowledge, realized she was in real bad trouble if found with the child, and then placed the child in a field to be found later? I listened to the mother's interview. She wants this child! Court apparently awarded custody to another relative.
